Tree Ottawa A Project of the Sierra Club Canada Foundation and Ecology Annual Report: 2014 Year in Review

2014 was a highly successful year for Tree Ottawa! After our official launch in October 2014, Ecology Ottawa’s million tree initiative has truly planted its roots into the fabric of our great city. This report will highlight the efforts Ecology Ottawa has taken to grow this collaborative effort into the force it is today. Some highlights: Tree Ottawa has negotiated a ground-breaking partnership with the City of Ottawa, secured multi-year sponsorships, hired a fulltime Organizer, developed an interactive website, was granted 4 Ontario Job Creation Program participants to aid the follow-though of this initiative, and our collaborators planted approximately 200,000 trees!

“Ecology Ottawa’s million tree goal would not be possible without the financial contributions of our many sponsors and individual donors, and the expert assistance from our Champions, Ambassadors,

Collaborators, and volunteers. We thank-you for your ongoing support of Tree Ottawa and look forward to working with you in 2015.”

Graham Saul, Chris Henderson, and Velta Tomsons; the organizational, strategic, and initiative leads (respectfully) for Tree Ottawa.

About Tree Ottawa

Tree Ottawa is an Ecology Ottawa initiative whose mandate is to help our city plant 1 million trees as our gift to

Canada for its 150th anniversary in 2017. Ecology Ottawa developed the million tree target in response to the impending devastation from the Emerald Ash Borer. Our great city is looking to lose over 20 million Ash trees from this beetle alone in the next 3-5 years! Immediate action was necessary to mitigate the plethora of negative consequences from the Emerald Ash Borer, climate change, urban expansion, and other tree threats. Tree Ottawa maintains that a healthy tree canopy is essential to Ottawa’s reputation as Canada’s capital and as a livable community with one of the world’s highest quality-of-life index scores. Trees provide immeasurable ecological benefits and contribute to our psychological well-being with spaces for pause and reflection in a bustling urban capital. Tree Ottawa is building a greener community by engaging residents, private companies and public organizations in active efforts to protect, plant and promote trees in Ottawa’s neighbourhoods and green spaces. This is a community-centred initiative for the Nation’s Capital to dramatically increase the scale and ecological diversity of the urban and rural tree canopy in Ottawa. Ecology Ottawa is registered in Ontario, Canada as a not-for-profit organization #1715290.

Tree Ottawa in 2014 – A Review

At the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014 Tree Ottawa saw a shift from organizational planning into base building and community outreach. There was the development of the Tree Team and the formalization of a key founding partnership with the City Of Ottawa. On October 14 2014, Tree Ottawa officially launched in Champlain Oaks Park with over 150 collaborators, associations, and citizens. The Mayor of Ottawa announced that the Forestry Department will plant 500,000 of the million tree target! This ground-breaking partnership allowed Tree Ottawa to mobilize the resources of the city towards achieving our communal goal.

After the Launch, the Tree Team was able to focus on strategic outreach to essential collaborators, community associations, businesses, and Ottawa organizations to get the people of Ottawa to plant more trees. This widespread community outreach and engagement to connect Ottawa residents, businesses and public bodies with the protecting, planting and promoting of trees will lay the groundwork for Tree Ottawa to organize 1 million trees planted for Canada’s sesquicentennial in 2017. Tree Ottawa has been astonishingly busy over the past year, expanding its influence faster than originally anticipated. This is clearly attributed to the secured presence of an initiative lead and experienced team. The following is a classification of the different events that transpired in 2014 with a more in-depth explanation afterwards:

1) Community Tree Plantings 2) Public Meetings 3) Tree Team Milestones 4) Media Coverage

1) Community Tree Planting Events During 2014 there were 3 community planting events organized by Tree Ottawa; May 24th, October 4th, and October 18th. Both the May 24th and October 4th planting were in Blackburn Hamlet. The 2014 plantings were due to over 8 months of intensive outreach into the community of Blackburn, which led into the development of the Blackburn Tree Planting Team and the decision to host an annual fall planting. Both events were well attended; over 20 and over 50 respectively. For 2014, Blackburn planted over 130 trees planted and 20 trees were adopted. The October 18th tree planting was in Orlando Park. This planting was the second held within Orlando Park, with the first being the year before. The Alta Vista Team is dedicated to increasing their communities green space, and are very interested in planting more trees when funding becomes available in 2015. Their October 18th planting was partially paid for by a TD Friends of the Environment grant which got 200 trees in the ground with over 40 neighbours attending. The City of Ottawa was an active member in planning this planting, they allowed Tree Ottawa to purchase discounted trees from their distributor to help cut the costs of the trees.

2) Public Meeting Events During 2014 there were 4 public meetings organized by Tree Ottawa; February 6th, March 8th, December 3rd, and December 8th.

On February 6th the Blackburn Hamlet Tree Planting Team hosted a public information session to inform their community that a plan was in the works for re-planting their parks. This meeting was led by local community organizers, Barb Sweazey and Laura Dudas, and Ecology Ottawa representatives with over 28 neighbours in attendance as well as the City of Ottawa Forester for this area. From this meeting Blackburn’s March planting was planned.

The March 8th Treehouse (or open house) was organized to pull many tree-friendly organizations and individuals together and talk about how we could all work towards a communal goal of 1 million trees. It was very well attended by 26 individuals and group representatives, including Scouts Canada, community associations, Greenspace Alliance and the Society of Nutgrowers of Eastern Ontario, to name a few. Some key relationships for Tree Ottawa were formed during this meeting. After 2 months of intensive petitioning in Convent Glen, the December 3rd Convent Glen/Orléans Wood Community Tree Planting Meeting was planned in association with their Community Association. Tree Ottawa’s plan was to replicate the success seen in Blackburn Hamlet in another area in Orléans. With over 40 people who attended, and a Steering Committee of approximately 10 people, it was clear that a new Tree Planting Team was in the works. Two Tree plantings are scheduled for this group in 2015. In 2013, Tree Ottawa celebrated its first planting event in the Lowertown Park, Bingham. This past December 8th, the Lowertown Community Association asked the Tree Team to propose potential parks for future plantings. A presentation was made and follow-up meetings for 2015 are being scheduled so the community can come-up with a plan to further green-up their neighbourhood.

3) Tree Team Milestones During 2014 there were 11 milestones within the Tree Ottawa initiative: June 27th, August 11th, September 1st, 2 on September 22nd, September 29th, October 6th, and 3 on October 14th. 2014 saw the establishment of a full time Ecology Ottawa employee running Tree Ottawa. On June 27th Velta Tomsons was hired to take over the initiative from Karen Hawley, the Community Network Coordinator at Ecology Ottawa. With a full-time employee running Tree Ottawa, the initiative was able to expand at the rate that it has during the last 6 months of 2014. To fully engage the Ottawa population, and capitalize on current online technologies a volunteer Media Manager was hired on August 11th. With the arrival of Fiona Smith, Tree Ottawa saw an immediate increase in Twitter followers and other online engagement. In 6 months we have seen an increase from less than 10 followers to almost 400! We expect our base to continue to grow through 2015.

Ecology Ottawa had applied for a grant from the Ministry of Training for 4 Ontario Job Creation Program participants. On September 1st the grant was approved and hiring process started. This lead to the hiring of Suman Gupta and Ryan McGarry on September 22nd, Derek Stack on September 29th, and Catherine Collier on October 6th. With a team of 5 in place, Tree Ottawa was then able to increase their outreach efforts to cover larger areas. The team has 5 main outreach priorities; Ottawa Carleton District School Board, community associations, local businesses, active lifestyle organizations, and faith based institutions. On October 14th, Tree Ottawa Officially Launched! At Champlain Park a group of over 100 collaborators, sponsors, community members, and school kids gathered to hear the Mayor of Ottawa, RBC Regional Representative, our lead volunteer Chris Henderson, FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015, and the Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa speak about the Tree Ottawa initiative. There was a ceremonial planting of an Oak tree, and over 30 signatures for our Tree Petition.

Along with the Launch event, Tree Ottawa also officially released the Tree Ottawa Guide in both official languages. This online, and free, document was designed to give anyone who wishes to get involved with Tree Ottawa the resources to do so. It highlights the proper way to plant trees, how to Adopt-a-Tree and why trees need to be adopted, and how to get more involved with Ottawa’s tree-scape. Since it has been put on the web, this page has been viewed regularly, and we have handed out copies at all of our events in the 2014 fall and winter months.

The last Tree Team milestone was the development of the Great Ecology Ottawa Tree Map. This is an online program purchased from OpenTreeMap.com to log the adopted trees in Ottawa. It is Tree Ottawa’s goal to see 20,000 trees adopted by 2017. This program lets us see where they are, interact with the people who do, and also build a community around taking care of our trees. The Tree Map also calculates the ecosystem benefits, energy savings, CO2 capture, and water retention as part of its programing. This allows us to show how valuable (financially and environmentally) trees really are.

4) Media Coverage Events 2014 saw the most media coverage to date! Tree Ottawa had 17 individual days of media coverage from local community newspapers to the Ottawa Citizen. Velta Tomsons has been interviewed twice by CBC TV, and the Tree Ottawa initiative was featured in a Rogers 3 part special called SOS Ottawa Trees.

Tree Ottawa 2014 Outreach Over the past year we have moved Tree Ottawa forward building a strong foundation for its growth and success. We have progressed in four key areas of outreach;

1) On the ground in communities with community associations and schools, 2) Intensive door-to-door petitioning, 3) Building relationships with partners and collaborators, 4) Boothing Opportunities and 5) Fundraising.

1) Community Outreach On the ground, in communities, Tree Ottawa has continued to work with neighbourhood teams on protecting, planting and promoting trees. As seen in the Blackburn Hamlet Pilot Project, the community association is key to gaining the citizen’s trust and ear. At the start of 2014 Tree Ottawa was working with 3 Community Associations, but because of our efforts and outreach, in the past 12 months we have increased our relationships to 8 community associations, with new ones expected in 2015.

Community associations have been one avenue that Tree Ottawa has explored to increase our community ties. Another is schools. Tree Ottawa has presented a “how to...” talk to a number of schools on naturalizing/tree planting in local neighbourhoods and on school property. Glashan Public School, Fisher Park Public School as well as St.Mary's High School have each embarked on significant school yard tree planting and greening projects.

Below are a list of the community association and Schools that Tree Ottawa has active projects with.

Community Associations Schools Blackburn Hamlet J.H Putnam Cardinal Creek Vincent Massey Convent Glen/Orléans Wood Glashan General Burns Academie de la Capitale Kanata Lakes Carine Wilson Leslie Park Mother Teresa Lowertown Fisher Park Orlando Park St. Mary’s

2) Door to Door Petitioning A key aspect of Ecology Ottawa’s work is petitioning door-to-door. It is the belief of our organization that if you want to get to know the citizens of Ottawa, then you have to go out and meet them. Petitioning began slowly in late September, and after the Tree Ottawa Launch on October 14th, petitioning became the focus of the Tree Team for 6 weeks.

In the time that the Tree Team was door knocking, we hit 3052 houses, with the total Petitions Signed 687. Not all door knocked resulted in a conversation, only 33% of the doors we knocked on were answered (Please see DOOR BREACKDOWN Chart below). From the total conversations the Tree Team had, we were averaging a 60% Yes rate (Please see INTERACTION BREAKDOWN Chart below). This kind of success, and these kinds of numbers would not have been possible without the Tree Team. Because of this work, Tree Ottawa hosted the Convent Glen/Orléans Wood Community meeting and have fostered another Tree Planting Team.

3) Collaborator Outreach Tree Ottawa’s goal of 1 million trees planted would not be possible without extensive collaboration. Our collaborators are all contributing to Tree Ottawa in different ways, and it isn’t only about planting trees. The 3 pillars of our initiative are; protect, plant, promote. Each equally as important. Some collaborators are working extensively to promote trees and tree habitat, like the Champlain Oaks Project. Where others are helping us tap into their niche market for promotion, like Moksha Yoga. At the start of 2014, Tree Ottawa had approximately 6 collaborators. At the end of 2014 we now have 20, with more underway. Below are a list of the organizations that Tree Ottawa has a current collaboration with. Champlain Oaks Project Ottawa Community Housing City of Ottawa Ottawa Sustainability Fund Community Urban Food Forest (CUFF) Ottawa 2017 FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 RBC Hidden Harvest RVCA Hotspurs Scouts Canada Just Food Sierra Youth Coalition Landscape Ontario Softek Solidaria Little Rays Reptiles Twigs Nursery Moksha Yoga WholeFoods

4) Boothing Events This past year the Suzuki Foundation started their BlueDot tour to celebrate the simple yet powerful idea: that all Canadians should have the right to drink clean water, breathe fresh air and eat healthy food. At the Ottawa

presentation on October 17th Ecology Ottawa’s Executive Director Graham Saul was asked to speak about the work we have been doing in our City. The Tree Team was present at the event handing out pamphlets and getting signatures for our petitions. This event was a full house, and multiple pages of signatures were collected. On October 18th there was an Eco Fair in Bells Corners where green living enthusiasts and vendors were invited to booth. Tree Ottawa was offered a booth to engage with the people who attended the fair, and help pursued a larger population to protect, plant and

promote trees. Over 100 people attended this event, and our presence lead to over 50 people signing our Tree Petition. This past November Wholefoods opened in the new TD Place at Lansdowne Stadium. They chose 5 local organization to booth at their store for their first 5 days, and gave the representing group 1% of their profits for the day. On November 20th Tree Ottawa was at Wholefoods from 10am-7pm, interacting with thousands of people. At the end of the day we were given our 1% of profits which ended up being $962.24 for Tree Ottawa!

5) Fundraising Tree Ottawa is an ambitious initiative and it requires some large funders. Because of this in 2014 we hired a fundraising consultant to work with Chris to develop fundraising plans and proposals. Grant proposals for more than $270,000 have been submitted to various granting agencies, including RBC-Blue Water, Intact Insurance, J.W. McConnell Foundation, Bentall Kennedy LP, Peacock Foundation, Hydro Ottawa, Telus and Tree Feed. Another $175,000 in proposals are waiting for review before their submissions. Since the submissions, Tree Ottawa has had some breakthrough funding sponsorships come to fruition. Our submission to the RBC Blue Water fund developed into a 75,000 grant, given over 3 years. This money has helped secure the Tree Ottawa Organizer’s salary, and pay for program related costs. Our relationship with RBC is not strictly that of donor/recipient, they are also collaborators by helping us advertise Tree Ottawa in their branches and helping us with events. One of the most exciting relationships that has been built, is with the City of Ottawa. They have committed to planting 500,000 trees over the time period of 2013-2017! We cannot achieve our goal of planting a million trees

without leadership from the City of Ottawa. At our May meeting Mayor Watson announced that the City would both join Tree Ottawa and make an initial donation of $15,000 towards the work. Since this pivotal meeting we have had multiple meetings with the City Forestry Department and are working together to cross promote. The City will be putting Tree

Ottawa information on all of their tree related outreach materials. We have had a few other donors come forward to help fund Tree Ottawa; Mark’s Choice, Tundra Technical, Jamie Benedickson, Champlain Oaks Project, Ontario Trillium Foundation, Echo Foundation, McLean Foundation, Crabtree Foundation, TD Friends of the Environment, the Writers Festival, and many individual donors including the Wholefoods donation. Each of these donors have been instrumental in helping Tree Ottawa get going and turn into the driving force that it is today.
