Decontamination of soil is a matter of separation.Metso has been a leading supplier of separation processingequipment throughout the century.During the years the company has also developedequipment and methods for environmental control.

In the eight-ies, Dutch companies like Jaartsveld, Mosmans andHeidemij pioneered the flotation technique for soilcleaning with Metso as a major equipment supplier.

In 1984, before soil cleaning became part of the pollutioncontrol agenda, Metso was faced with the problem ofcleaning a landfill site at a manufacturing plant forpesticides. A flowsheet involving pre-treatmentclassification, flotation and dewatering was developed andverified in pilot scale at the Metso laboratories. Metsoengineered and supplied the plant with guaranteedperformance.

The PYROKILN system, developed by the Metso Pyrodivision, is an established technology for removal ofprimarily organic contaminants.As an alternative the Metso Holo-Flite® Processor, offersthe following unique features:

• Indirect heating. No contact between product andheating media

• Exhaust gas only originates from the waste• Heat transfer through the heated media means

maximum utilisation of energy• Excellent control of mass flow and temperature• Operation up to 315°C / 600°F.

Steps in the soil-All the unit operations shown in this simplified general flowsheet of a soil washing process must not necessarily be used in thesystem. Also variations and additional steps may apply from case to case. As illustrated, practically all components critical for theprocess will be delivered by Metso, and most of the ancilliary equipment will also be delivered by companies within the Metso

FeedingThe feed is charged by front loader to a feedstation. Stones, stubs and the like are rejectedon a grizzly. Special conveyor arrangements,here Stephen Adamson Apron Feeder, allowsfor feeding of clay and sticky materials.

Coarse screeningThe coarse fraction material is normallyunpolluted. The +2 mm oversize material maysimply be screened off and recovered as aproduct on a Metso Low Head Wet Screen.In the following treatment the soil will be inslurry form.

Slurry pumpingAbrasive resistantslurry pumps are to beused in all positions.The VS pump uses nosealing water, acceptsdry running andpumps gravel materialif necessary.

DeslimingMaterial finer than 0.03 - 0.1 mm is normallyheavily contaminated. Cyclones are suitablefor separation of the fines. Overflow fines aredewatered with the toxic concentrate fromthe further processing. Metso or Krebscyclones may be suggested depending onduty.

Attrition scrubbersContaminants are released from the particlesurfaces by friction forces. As alternative toMetso attrition scrubbers, the Metso WashingDrum or SRR Mill may be preferred for thispurpose.

Water recovery / sludgeconcentrationConventional clarificationand thickening would havebeen a bottle-neck in amobile soil-washing plant.The Metso inclined platesettler gives 100 m2 mobileheavy duty settling area.

Dewatering ofconcentratesThe concentrated conta-minated sludge may bedewatered with the MetsoVertical Plate Pressure Filer,VPA, before further processingor final controlled disposal.

ConditioningChemicals are added for the preparation of the particles to makethem respond as desired in the following flotation. Heavy dutyMetso slurry mixers are used for the conditioning.

FlotationFinely dispersed air bubblesintroduced in the flotation circuitwill attract hydrophobic material.The conditioning will direct a certainsubstance to a float or sink product.Selectivity is the prime quality of theMetso flotation cells.

Gravity separationGravity separation is an alternative toflotation, which may offer costadvantages in particular for theseparation of light organic material.The MDL LG Spiral Concentrator isaimed for the duty.

Dewatering of clean sandRecovery of clean sand andpreclarification of process water ismade in one step in Metso screwdewaterers. Alternatively cyclones incombination with a dewateringscreen may be used in this position.

Froth pumpingPump and pump sump areintegrated in the Metso VF pump,making it ideal for feed from varioussources. The VF pump is in additionspecially developed for frothpumping. As the VS pump the VFuses no sealing water, accepts dryrunning and is simple to maintain

Laboratory and field test services

Virtually all components used in soil washing plants todayare supplied by Metso.Dimensioning laboratory bench and pilot studies can bemade for each individual unit process. Various flowsheetscan be built up and checked out in pilot scale at ourlaboratories or in the field.We can offer a wide experience in the design of processesand systems as a guide to optimum ways of treatment.Where performance and sizing criteria are not fully known,tests, equipment modifications and process developmentwill be made to solve the problem.

1. Bench tests for flotation and other solid/solid separationmethods.

2. Analysis of heavy metal concentration in atomicadsorption spectrophotometer.

4. Cyclosizer. Preparation of feed material for fractionanalysis.

3. Pilot plant with a capacity of 1 tph for on-site treatmentof a creosote contaminated soil, on lease by NOAH andAquateam A/S, Norway.

General Information

Mobile and modular plant experienceThe Metso process system group has delivered more thanone hundred processing plants throughout the years.Some of these have been of mobile or semi-mobile, de-sign, in itself a record by number in mobile plantcommissioning.The plants may be supplied as:

• Fully mobile on wheel carriers or king-pin trailers

• Semi-mobile in standard. container size frame modules,dismantled and moved on regular transports from onesite to the next.

• Stationary plants, designed for high production capacity.A mobile plant will be limited to a capacity of some30-50 tph. The stationary plant may be preferred frommultiple units of mobile type when high capacities arerequired.

The frame mounted design of this 25 tph plant (for ART)will be dismantled and reerected in 2-3 weeks time by askilled team. Transport time is to be added.

Since many years all design work is done with CAD. Theengineering can be adapted from previous plantsshortening delivery time and promoting plant availability.
