    UMKCINTERNATIONAL SUMMERTRAVELAWARDAPPLICATION

    The opportunity to apply for a Travel Award is available to all currently enrolled UMKC students who plan tostudy abroad during the summer. However, the award process is highly competitive and funds are limitedto 3 awards; consequently, not every applicant is guaranteed an award. In an effort to distribute the funds ina fair and even manner, the Committee has established the following guidelines outlined below.

    You are responsible for seeing that all materials are in by the deadlines:Summer 2012 deadline February 24th, 2012

    Amount of the award will vary: Up to $500 could be awarded to summer study abroad applicants

    ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

    Special consideration may be given to applicants who have little or no prior international travelexperience.

    The Committee emphasizes the applicant's length of time at UMKC; those who have been at UMKCfor a longer time may be given preference. Similar emphasis is placed upon the students academicyear in school, and full-time versus part-time status.

    Special preference is given to students traveling on programs 20 days or longer. Students who pursue opportunities that transfer coursework back to UMKC may be givenpreference.

    Each students UMKC GPA is considered, as well as his or her academic record on the whole. A student must be in good academic standing and not under any sanctions due to breach of the

    Student Conduct Code, in order to be considered for the award. Preference may be given to undergraduate students. The personal statement is important; clarity of expression, strength of motivation for the overseas

    experience, and mechanics of writing will all be considered. Each awardee must understand that the Travel Award is distributed for the specific purpose of

    international academic travel. If a student is awarded and decides not to study abroad, the awardmust be returned. Awards may also be withdrawn if a student postpones participating in a study

    abroad program. All students, regardless of the program in which they are participating, MUST attend one of the pre-departure orientations sponsored by the International Academic Programs Office (IAP). TravelAward funds are not disbursed into students accounts until they have attended a pre-departureorientation.

    Incomplete applications will not be considered. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sureall application materials are at the IAP before the deadline.

    Each awardee will be required to provide a written assessment of the program and the experiencesof being a study abroad student to IAP at the completion of his or her program.

    PROCEDURES

    Completed application, personal statement, and letter of reference must be returned to IAP on or

    before the deadline.
