C O M M E N T A R Y
AIR TRANSPORT There was an overall decrease of 138,237 or 4.9 per cent passengers for 2002 that used the Malta International Airport. The decrease was spread throughout the first three quarters of the year whilst in the fourth quarter the trend improved drastically as shown below:
January - March - -8.7 per cent
April - June - -10.2 per cent
July - September - -5.9 per cent
October - December - 8.4 per cent (see table 1)
The number of passenger movements from Italy increased by 6,029 whilst the other entire major countries or regions registered a drop. Passenger movement from Other EU countries registered the highest decrease of 40,300 to 512,732 from the previous year (see table 2). British airports remained the most sought by the passengers traveling to and from Malta with Gatwick showing a slight increase of 2.8 per cent and Manchester resulting a drop of 6.3 per cent. Heathrow airport registered a decrease of 19,586 passengers or 10.3 per cent over the same period under review (see table 3). Air Malta remained to be the major carrier, taking up 62.6 per cent of the total aircraft movements and 63.2 per cent of the total passenger movements. The Maltese company carried 1,637,717 passengers, a decrease of 3.1 per cent. Britannia Airways carried 94,133 passengers (showed a decrease of 16.9 per cent) whilst Lufthansa carried 107,869 passengers, registering an increase of 6.4 per cent over the previous year (see table 4). The most common used aircraft was the Boeing 737-300 Series totaling 10,984 flights. This 70-5- passenger range aircraft took 41.6 per cent of the total flights whilst the bigger Airbus A320 (100-70 passenger range) took 19.2 per cent of the market share (see table 5). MARITIME TRANSPORT There was an increase of 82,350 tons of unloaded units when compared with year 2001. All the unloaded containers showed an increase; 20-footers increased by 7.7 per cent to 22,787 and the 40-foot containers increased by 921 to 11,758 or 8.5 per cent. The total number of loaded units was 341,541 tons; an increase of 21,569 tons or 6.7 per cent (see table 7). Italy remained the major country that had vessels entering and clearing into the Maltese ports. The total net tons coming from Italian ports took 19.3 per cent of the total entered net tons. This was followed up by Spain who took 6.4 per cent of the market share (see table 10.)

ROAD TRANSPORT The total number of private vehicles in Malta amounted to 181,220 with Birkirkara registering the highest number of vehicles i.e. 10,838. Mosta and Qormi followed with 9,580 and 8,756 respectively. Victoria has 2,883 licensed private vehicles in its locality, resulting into the biggest locality in Gozo (see tables 11 & 12). Malta imported 3,210 new petrol vehicles in the 1000-1499 cc category in 2002. This resulted in an increase of 482 vehicles or 17.7 per cent when compared to the previous year. There was a total of 6,699 imported new and used diesel vehicles in 2002; an increase of 346 or 5.4 per cent from the previous year (see table 13). OTHER TRANSPORT There was an increase of 141,627 passengers or 4.5 per cent who crossed the Maltese Islands. The total number of vehicles was 844,913; an increase of 6.0 per cent over the previous year (see table 27). In 2002 there were a total of 1,312 persons who sustained injuries, with 800 being males and 512 being females. Out of the reported 573 male slight injuries 194 cases were in the 15-24 years category. In the same category, 122 females were injured. In the Maltese Islands there where 16 fatal casualties; 14 being males and 2 being females. In respect of casualties by means of transport there were 781 accidents, which occurred by passenger cars. Again the highest number was recorded in the 15-24 years category. Furthermore there were 249 pedestrians who suffered an accident. The total number of traffic accidents was 14,062, an increase of 690 with the highest number being recorded in the North Harbour District where 5,623 cases being reported (see tables 28-30).
