Translation MemoryA translation memory, or TM, is a
database that stores "segments", which can be sentences, paragraphs or sentence-like units (headings, titles or elements in a list) that have previously been translated, in order to aid human translators. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units”.

Makes sure that translators need not translate similar or identical sentences more than once.
What does a TM do?

Memory
My girlfriend has got a new red bicycle.
Each unit of text in the original and target language is stored in a database (....After it has been confirmed by the translator.)
When the translator starts working on a new unit, the software automatically searches for similar units in the database and suggests hits.
Similarity is computed on the basis of string comparison (surface level).
Usually only hits above a certain threshold will be offered (default 70 %).
100 % = exact match99 – 70 % = fuzzy match< 70 % = no match
