Update: Scaling

▪ ISBE and ICCB along with others are working on the legislatively required phased implementation plan. High schools will get their “date” next year. High schools should begin planning now since that gives the most time and control over the process.

▪ A survey went out to the high school math chairs in early September to share a school’s TM plan. Email Kathy if you are a HS math chair and have not received the link. This allows us to update our records.

CC Roles

A CC liaison is essential to a positive experience for everyone. Possible duties include the following. This should be adapted for each situation and number of high schools.

▪ Can assist HS with curriculum development and PD if they have a course that meets PWR guidelines (e.g., PMGE, tech math)

▪ Collection and management of documentation going to portability panel

▪ Coordinating development of MOU with HS

▪ Look at data with HS once implementation is far enough along

▪ Write a common assessment with HS (optional; not a placement test)

▪ Promote the course with HS with letters and meetings for parents

PWR Transitional Math Advising

Oct 30, 2018 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM CDT

This webinar will act as the second part of a two-part counselor professional development series. It will address issues that high school counselors will face as they advise high school juniors for senior math registration. Topics will include who is eligible for transitional math, which pathway best serves particular majors, how graduation requirements factor into transitional math, and more. Additional time has been built in to accommodate questions. The webinar will be recorded.

All attendees of this webinar are encouraged to watch the October 16 webinar (PWR Transitional Math Overview) prior to attending.

All high school counselors should attend this webinar or view its recording since it will serve as the second part of a two-part counselor professional development series. Additional attendees are also welcome.

Update: Portability Panel

▪ The fall portability panel meeting has been set for October 24.

▪ The panel will be determining how partnership submissions will work and what should be submitted. Information will be shared later this month.

▪ The goal is a full call for any CC/HS partnership in Spring 2019. Aim to get your partnership’s MOU done by March 1.

Update: Resource development

Funding has been acquired from ISBE and ICCB to pay for resource development for all 3 pathways. This will be done in conjunction with employers and other professionals to ensure authenticity and a new experience for this population of students.

Scope & sequence charts along with competency rubrics are available now. Sample unit maps with OER tasks will be available in June.

Update: STEM pathwayThe STEM pathway curricular process has had the most trouble. Tech and QL have units outlined that will be fleshed out, added to, and completed by June 2019. STEM is going to take more time. So a short term and long term solution are being developed.

Short term: Information and projects to convert existing intermediate algebra courses will be created for Fall 2019 pilots. More traditional, linear approach but with context incorporated to meet state policy requirements.

Long term: An integrated set of units addressing the competencies with the same focuses as QL and tech of careers and task-based instruction will be completed for Fall 2020 pilots.

All dates are tentative.

Ideas

What ideas are working for you that you would like to share?

◦ Joint test writing of a cumulative test that aligns with competencies

Q&A1. What grading policies have been agreed upon for the MOU around the state?

We would like a starting point. Are there MOU's that are completed that can be shared?

2. When will we know the state portability codes and how will they look on a HS transcript?

3. What are colleges doing about seniors who are in the transitional math course but have not completed it by the time the college recruiters come to their school in the spring to deliver a New Student Orientation and register for fall classes? Our recruiters usually placement test students who do not meet prerequisites by some other way, but transitional math students won't be done for another few months yet and we don't want them to take a placement test if they won't need one.

Page 24: Transitional Math Update - East St. Louis Community College Center · 2018-11-13 · PD for counselors –webinar series On October 16, part 1 of a two-part webinar series on TM was

Q&A4. How are schools coming to consensus for the MOU? Another event or can

this be done via survey monkey or email chains? This is an overwhelming task.

5. If we are allowed to offer the course as a semester or a year, and we choose to offer it as a semester course, do we need to cover the entirety of the units of study that were provided for the year long course, or roughly half of those units? If we offer the course as a semester, we would offer dual credit (or early college) for the other semester.

6. Do we have to begin piloting in 2019? What are we required to do and when are we required to do it?

7. We already have a TM course. What do we have to do to meet the law’s requirements?
