Some of you may already be familiar with the Zones of Regulation as a tool to support self-regulation. During the activities and discussions, try using the ZONES to help identify how you are feeling about moving onto secondary school;

It is useful for you to find out as much information as you can about your new school before you start in September. Some of the information you may know already, but try using the internet to research and learn some new information.

What is your school website address?

What is the name of the Headteacher?

What is the name of your Head of Year or Head of House?

What are the names of all your schools Houses?

What time does the school day start?

What time does the school day finish?

How many lessons are there in one day?

How long is each lesson?

Are mobile phones allowed in school and are there any conditions?

What colours are your new school uniform?

Do you need to wear a tie?

How many miles is your journey from home to school?

How will you be getting to and from school?

Researching your new school

You will meet a lot of new adults at secondary school; some you will see every day and some not as often. Every adult in school is there to help you, but as in primary school, some members of staff have particular roles. You will also have to get used to different job titles, but they will soon become familiar to you.

Form Tutor You will be allocated a form group, Form Tutor and form room, when you arrive at school. This will usually stay the same all through your time at school. Your Form Tutor will normally be a teacher too and you will most likely see them every day. They will take the register and organise tutor time. They will also be a link between school and home. Head of Year or Head of House / Pastoral Support You will have a Head of Year or Head of House, who you will meet on your first day. Their main responsibility is looking after students’ education, behaviour and wellbeing. There will also be a Pastoral Team in school who will be there for you to talk to if you have any concerns or worries. They will also be a link between school and home. Student Support/Services Most schools have Student Support/Services team, here are some of the things they might help you with;

Signing in and out when you are late or have an appointment in school time If you lose something If you need money on your card/finger If you feel ill If you need a bus pass If you need to buy equipment If you get lost If you lose your timetable

School Office The School Office in secondary school is exactly the same as in your primary school. They will be located at Reception and will meet and greet visitors, answers phones and support the school. You might also sign in and out here, if you are late or have appointments in school time. Lost property might be located here as well. The school office can help you with most of your queries. First Aid/Medical Room Some schools will have a dedicated medical room or First Aider to help you if you are hurt or ill. You will find this out on your first day. Just like in primary school, if you feel ill, tell a teacher or another adult in school. If you are at break or lunch, it might be a good idea to ask a friend to go with you. The adult will talk to you and find out if your parents/carers need to be called. Learning Support Your new school will probably have a separate area for Learning Support, which sometimes is near the library. If you have any interventions or need extra support you might have some lessons in here. Sometimes Learning Support is where the Homework Club is located.

Here are some common questions asked by students,remember there are always lots of adults who can help you. Try using the information we have just looked at to identify one or two adults who could help you. Remember everyone is new and will have lots of questions to ask. Things aren’t that different to being at primary school really!

What if I can’t find my classroom?

What if I feel ill?

What if I need extra help with learning?

What if I am worried about something?

What if I find it hard to make friends?

What if I have no money to get lunch?

What if I keep getting consequences?

What if I forget my homework?

What if I forget my PE kit or equipment?

What if …

How many toilets can you find?

Is there a First Aid Room? Where is it?

Is there a Library? Where is it?

Which floor would you go to for an English lesson?

Which floor would you go to for a Science lesson?

Where would you go for a Drama lesson?

How many Maths rooms are there? Where are they?

Which subjects are taught in Humanities classrooms?

What do you think MFL stands for?

Which floor is Student Services on? What can they help you with?

You are asked to go to see your Head of House/Head of Year 7. Where would you find them?

You are moving from Food Tech to French. Will you need to use any stairs? If so, how many flights?

You are moving from the ICT Suite to PE. Which other subject rooms will you pass?

Your last period before lunch is in the Library, are you near the dining room?

Look at the time-table you made earlier. Pick one day and work out how many times you would use stairs?

You are beginning the transition into young adults and starting to take on new responsibilities, eg. getting to school and handing in homework on time and keeping safe. Look at the following scenarios, then discuss as a class and look for sensible responses or solutions;

Someone keeps asking to copy your homework, saying they will get a detention if you don’t let them.

Someone keeps asking you for money, saying their parents have lost their jobs.

You lend someone some equipment, but when you ask for it back they deny that you lent it to them.

Students in another year group keep pushing you in the lunch queue, then saying it’s an accident.

You are in a group chat and someone starts saying unkind comments about another student.

Someone takes a picture of you and posts it on social media.

Someone says something unkind about you on social media.

Someone gives out your phone number without your permission.

A friend tells you they are struggling to settle in and are feeling really unhappy.

You find you are turning up late for school because your friend is never ready on time. You have now been given a consequence.

Use the example rewards and consequences chart to see if you can answer the questions below;

What two things could earn you a reward point at both primary and

secondary?

If you forget your blazer, what might happen?

If you come to school every day for a month, what reward could you receive?

If you forget to hand in your homework, what might happen?

When might you receive a postcard home?

What do you think ‘truancy’ means?

How many house points would you need to attend a prize giving evening?

What do you think ‘isolation’ means?

If you offer to help at an open evening, what reward might you receive?

You are asked three times in one lesson to stop talking. What sanction might you receive and why?

Why do you think chewing gum and littering results in a detention? Do you agree?

Use these to write an acrostic poem, using one word that describes you for each letter. Your word can begin with the letter (Forgiving), it can be in the middle (organNised) or it can be at the end (hardD working).
