EDITORIAL NOTE

Like certain wines, good historians often improve with age. So. although J. J. Bagley and Dr James Murphy have now retired from their editorial labours, we hope that in other capacities they will continue to enlarge our knowledge and understanding for many years to come. One measure of the Society's debt to them is the eighteen volumes of our Transac tions from Volume 101 onwards. At first these were fashioned by Mr Bagley alone and then, after 1960, in partnership with Dr Murphy. For the present editor, who joined the partners as an apprentice in 1967. they are an invaluable source of help and encouragement as they have been to so many contributors over the years.

The Council wishes to thank Mr D. Anderson, Mr B. Coward, Mr J. R. Hunt and Mr S. Alasdair Munro for contributing towards the cost of publishing this volume, also Mr R. Bromley for the main index and Mr J. McN. Dodgson for the special place-name index.

August 1968 K. B. DRAKEThe UniversityLiverpool Honorary Editor

Contributors to these Transactions are advised to write to the Honorary Editor, who can supply a leaflet containing guidance for contributors.

The Honorary Secretary will be pleased to hear from members who wish to read papers or persons wishing to join the Society. Membership is open to all. Members are entitled to attend the Society's meetings, borrow from its valuable library, and receive the annual volume of Transactions.
