EDITORIAL NOTE

During its long life the Society has consistently published papers written chiefly by its own members. This year the Council has included in the TRANSACTIONS a nineteenth-century document, trans cribed and edited with the minimum of comment. If members approve, "The Diary of John Ward" can be the first of a number of short primary sources to be printed occasionally in the TRANSACTIONS.

The Society expresses its thanks to Miss J. Beck, Mr. W. F. Irvine, Mr. A. S. Mountfield and Miss S. S. Tollit for donations towards the cost of publishing this volume, to the Library and Museum Committees of the city of Lancaster and the county borough of Warrington for purchasing the blocks used respectively in illus trating Professor Richmond's paper and Mr. Carter's paper, and to "The Railway Magazine", "The British Railways' Magazine", and "The Railway Gazette" for giving generous publicity to Mr. Greville's "Chronological List of the Railways of Lancashire, 1828-1939."

J. J. BAGLEY, 8 September 1954. Honorary Editor.

The University, Liverpool.

The Council wishes it to be known that authors alone are responsible for the opinions and statements in their several com munications.

Contributors to these TRANSACTIONS are advised to communicate with the Honorary Editor from whom suggestions on the preparation of manuscripts are available on request. Members who wish to read papers should communicate with the Honorary Secretary.
