From the principal Hi everyone – After a fantastic 2017, here comes a wonderful 2018!

A GREAT Start to 2018 Welcome back everyone to another busy year. Already we have booked in a dance workshop , notes are going home about our instrumental music program and Mr Screen has started his drumming sessions with Stage 3 – and ALL in the first 2 days!

Students have returned with enthusiasm, glad to be back at school and with their friends - and looking great. We have been pleased to welcome quite a few new students to our school along with our newest Kindy members and our Year 7s, fresh into High School. The Kindy class will be a K/1 class with the focus being on foundation skills. With Ms Jo Ellis, they are destined for great things!

We continue to be an Early Action for Success school, with our Instructional Leader Mrs Julie Whiteley, leading the program. This early intervention strategy is honestly one of the best strategies that the Department of Education has ever introduced and the level of its success can be measured by the continuation of the program several years after its first 3 year cycle. I cannot imagine why anyone would not want their child to be a part of this program so if you are interested in finding out more, come in and have a look. Mrs Whiteley and our own Ms Ellis will be happy to explain and brag about our school.

Years 7/8 and Years 9/10 are both in three classes of less than 20 students and this is an ideal number for individual support but with enough students to offer interaction, support and competition where appropriate. We have a great staff who love our students and our school. The low turnover rate of our staff speaks volumes for the supportive and cohesive culture that exists. It is a privilege to work with this fine group of professionals.

Our seniors have come back looking very fresh and keen. Three students even contacted one of our teachers in the holidays for some work!! I must say that this is a first in my very long career. The academic success of last year’s Year 12 is a great example to all of our students that if you stay at our school it is possible to succeed. We have a very powerful combination of small classes and dedicated and talented teachers who know your child as an individual and not just a number in a class of thirty – AND the price is right.

Have Your Say

Parent Teacher Interviews This year we have decided to have our first Parent teacher interviews early – on the 27th February from 3.30pm until 5.30pm. We felt that it would be more effective if parents and teachers met early so that we could find out about each other and discuss your child in plenty of time to learn everything we can about them. If this date is not suitable for you, do not hesitate to contact us for an alternative time to meet. P&C Another way to have your say, and have an impact on your child’s school is by coming along to P&C. Please do not be worried that if you come you will get a job – only if you want one. If our school is to respond to the needs and wishes of our community, a strong and active P&C is essential. We meet on the Tuesday of Week 2 each term. As we started in Week 2 this term, with heat week, our first P&C Meeting of the year will be next Tuesday 13th February. We meet in the secondary staff common room so please join us. For each meeting please ring the office and let us know you are/are not attending so that if we do not have a quorum we can avoid a long, pointless drive for those who live out of town.

In 2017 our P&C organised an amazing MADD Fete that raised the money to pay for Stage 2 of our playground equipment, so why not jump on board and give us your ideas. Hope to see you there.

Trangie Central School Shines Yet Again! Australia Day in 2018 was a very big day for our school. I attended the breakfast and was very proud of our students and staff when it was announced that we received THREE awards of recognition. Ben Thornton was named Junior Sports Person of the Year, Narelle Shillingsworth-Budd was announced the Junior Citizen of the Year and our own Jess Skinner was a very worthy Citizen of the Year. All three recipients are amazing all-rounders who are successful in many areas, and great role models for their peers.

Congratulations also to Mrs Gabrielle Wake as Senior Sportsperson of the Year and The Community Event being the opening of our amazing Wungunja Cultural Centre. Communities like Trangie are made so much richer for the presence of such people.

Congratulations also to Daniel Flannery who was successful in his application for the Auscott Scholarship. This prestigious award has not been presented to anyone from Trangie for a very long time. We at Trangie Central School are very proud of Daniel and his achievements. It does show that if you stay at our school, with determination and the acceptance of all the opportunities offered, you CAN succeed. Money does not buy success, hard work does that for you – along with support from our school and your family.

Staff Smile of the Week (Week 9)

Goes to Jacky Murtagh for enthusiasm and planning for Middle School STEM.

Welcome and Farewell We are very pleased to welcome Mr Scott McDonald to our school. Mr McDonald is teaching English this year, covering Mrs Wilson’s Advanced English classes while she is on maternity leave.

We are also sorry to see Mrs Colleen Gorman finish her time with us on Friday afternoon. Mrs Gorman will be returning to Grenfell, but I am sure we will see her again whenever we have the need of an experienced teacher to cover classes in the case of absence. We wish her all the best.

Academic Aspirations At Trangie Central School we know that a strong wellbeing program is essential for learning. This is an area of real strength for us and we constantly rate as Excellent in the evaluation of our practice. With this strong foundation of support and care, all the factors are in place for quality teaching and learning. We are better placed in 2018 than we have ever been.

After training and trialling the program in 2017, we are now launching our implementation of ALARM: A Learning and Responding Matrix. This method of scaffolding students’ work has been successful in lifting senior HSC results significantly. We are introducing across the secondary school so that by senior school it will be second nature.

Using the ALARM method gives students a clear understanding of the logical steps to take in planning responses and they are taught to recognise, using colour coding, what the levels of thinking are when they move through a question from an introduction of the facts all the way to analysing the ‘pros and cons’ of an argument.

Several staff, trialling the structure, have had excellent results reflected in much improved student writing, and also a lift in HSC results for those subjects. We have real work samples to show the difference in standard from ‘before’ and ‘after’ and I truly believe that we have found the answer, in a very structured and manageable way, to really have an impact on students’ responses.

ALARM will be implemented across the whole Western Access program.

Finally ........ My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us. Facebook is for cowards – so please tell us to our face! All the best,

Anne Holden

SECONDARY Head Teachers’ Report

Welcome to Our New Staff and Students We have many new students beginning this year at Trangie CS for their secondary studies and all of our staff are available to assist them to settle in to their new routine. There is a positive feeling across the school as we commence the 2018 school year. I would like to welcome Mr Scott McDonald to our school who is relieving Mrs Wilson this year. Mr McDonald brings years of English teaching experience with him and will be a valuable asset to our English faculty.

Farewell Mrs McKinnon Mrs Cheryl McKinnon has devoted much of her life to Public Education and to Trangie Central School in particular. She has gained much respect for her dedication to the students and for the support (often behind the scenes) that she has provided to so many activities. I have valued the years that I have spent working with Mrs McKinnon as a colleague in the Technology Faculty and know that she will be missed. We wish her well in her retirement from teaching. A new Food Technology teacher should be appointed to our school in the near future.

School Equipment All students are expected to be prepared for each of their lessons with basic equipment such as pens, pencils, ruler etc. A specific list of book/folder requirements has been provided to assist parents and carers to prepare their students for individual subjects. Please ensure that all necessary items are organised for a productive start to the new school year.

Please note: some practical subjects require students to wear fully enclosed footwear at all times - joggers are not considered to be adequate.

Access Camp Our Year 11 and 12 students will be attending the Western Access Program (WAP) camp next week on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th February. These students will participate in face-to-face lessons with their coordinating teachers and have the opportunity to meet their classmates from the other Access schools. All permission notes are due by Monday 12th February and therefore need to be returned promptly to school.

Sports Captains Congratulations to our 2018 House Captains! Karly Edwards & Jacana Powell (Bundemar), Christian Cole & James Churchward (Widgeree) and Bryce Hannaford & Bonnee Morton (Dandaloo).

CHESS CLUB & COMPETITION

We are very excited to announce that we now have a dedicated chess table and chair, one each for Primary and

Secondary students to use. Both sets are placed under the shade of trees and students will be able to enjoy a quiet

game of chess during their recess and lunch breaks.

We are looking for a team of 4 students to compete at a chess competition in March. All students are encouraged to

participate. I know a lot of Primary students who would love to go, but the team must have at least two Secondary

students to enter the competition.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our senior students to become leaders, role models and mentors for our junior

students! It doesn't matter if we don’t win, it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn from experienced players and to see

what makes other chess enthusiasts enjoy the challenge so much.

If you are interested in being part of this team, please let Miss Ebsworth know before the 15th February.

P&C MEETING

Tuesday 13th February 2018

4.00pm - Secondary Staff Room

Welcome back to the new school year! We are looking forward to another incredible year and we have some

exciting plans in place already that will benefit our students and beautify our school.

We warmly extend an invitation to all families of the Trangie Central School community to join us at our first

meeting of the year. We’d love to meet you or to see you again! We can show you what we do, why we do it

and how we do it. If you have ideas for our school we’d love to hear them! In particular, we encourage parents

of our Secondary students to contribute ideas that may be of benefit to our older students.

Remember, P&C stands for Parents & Community and we can only do our best with your support, so we

encourage you to be part of the planning process. Your children WILL benefit from the support and efforts of

the P&C.

Why Join the P&C?

Actions always speak louder than words when it comes to valuing your child’s learning. Joining the P&C is one

of the best ways to show your children how much you value their education and how interested you are in what

they do. By joining the P&C, you are showing your children how committed you are to helping students and

your school community. Participating in P&C activities can also help you to form friendships with other

parents/carers and feel a part of your school community. A lot has been achieved through the P&C and school

working together towards common goals. To continue this important work, P&Cs need people from all walks

of life and with a range of talents who are committed to delivering great outcomes for their children and

school. Everybody has a role to play and your ideas will be heard. The more people involved, the more exciting

and successful it will be. And research shows that children perform better at school when their parents are

involved in their education.
