too often, unfortunately, the onlydifference between the sections is the signs.

An effective-air quality program mustinclude air cleaning. The question is howto effectively manage smoke and odorsin your establishment. Until now, theanswer has not been an easy one.Bringing in more fresh air will only go sofar. Fresh air is not always so fresh(containing pollen, mold, dust, exhaust, and odors). Also, fresh air is expensive:over a year, each cubic foot of air youbring in will cost between $1.50 and$2.00 to condition. This adds up quickly.

Customer Satisfaction andClean AirFor anyone in the hospitality business, the biggest single concern is customersatisfaction — if you do not make yourcustomers happy and comfortable, youcan lose them.

For an increasing number of customers,a critical part of their comfort andsatisfaction is the air they breathe.According to the National RestaurantAssociation, 80 percent of patrons saidthe most important customer service anestablishment could offer was separatesmoking and non-smoking sections. Dynamic Air CleanersDynamic Air Cleaners are the nextgeneration of air cleaning technology–helping a growing number of people inthe hospitality industry effectively andeconomically solve their air qualityproblems. Dynamic Air Cleanersemploy a revolutionary, patentedprocess that has been used since 1984in commercial, industrial, and medicalfacilities globally. Dynamic Air Cleanershave proven themselves to beparticularly effective at removingcigarette smoke in diverse applications, ranging from a 750-unit restaurantchain to the Japanese Bullet Train, andfrom gaming facilities and casinos toemployee smoking lounges.

How They Work— Dynamic Air Cleaners’Patented TechnologyIn our unique system, safe, low-currentDC power is continuously applied to thecenter screen (either aluminum or carbonmesh) within the disposable filter pad. This creates an electrostatic fieldbetween the center screen and the filter

frame. This force field polarizes each fiberof the filter pad, giving each fiber anegative and positive pole—just like amagnet. Particles entering the filter thenbecome polarized and are drawn to the

Dynamic AirCleaners are thenext generationof air cleaningtechnology–helping agrowing numberof people in thehospitalityindustryeffectively andeconomicallysolve their airquality problems.

How They CompareMost filters and air cleaners are notmade to, and, therefore, do not, catchparticles the size of cigarette smoke(that’s why it is still a problem). Twotechnologies often used to try to catchsmoke are high-efficiency passive filters(such as HEPAs) and electrostaticprecipitators. Both can work, but have problems.

High-efficiency passive filters areexpensive to install, replace, and operate. They are also restrictive to airflow, andconsequently need powerful fans thatcan be noisy and use a lot of electricity.

Electrostatic precipitators are currentlyperhaps the most commonly used air-cleaning devices in the hospitalityindustry. You may be using one now. They were developed more than fortyyears ago for large industrialapplications. Precipitators use a high DCvoltage to actually charge, or ionize,

airborne particles. These chargedparticles are then attracted to collectionplates within the unit. However, as theseplates load, their ability to attractparticles decreases, and their efficiencycan drop off rapidly. Therefore, even ifthe unit is cleaned weekly, itsperformance can be below optimummost of that time. The uncollected, charged smoke and dust particles will bedrawn into the general air-handlingsystem and distributed throughout theestablishment. Here, they will attach toanything that is grounded: walls, ceilings, furniture, fixtures, artwork, and, worst ofall, your patrons’ clothing and hair.Precipitators also use high-voltageelectricity—producing the well-knownsnapping sound, as well as toxic ozone.

filter fibers, the same way that paperclips are drawn to a magnet. Just aspaper clips on a magnet attract otherpaper clips, the dirt collected by the filterbecomes part of the collecting surface, giving the filter increasing efficiency as itloads with contaminants. Furthermore, the polarizing field causes uncollectedparticles to form into larger groups thatwill be easier to catch the next timethrough. The activated carbon centerscreen will remove many odors andgases, such as ozone.

How They PerformTo meaningfully compare Dynamic AirCleaners, we must consider the nature ofcigarette smoke and look at the othertechnologies. Cigarette smoke particlesare difficult to catch because they arevery smal—less than 1.0 micron. (Amicron is a 25,000th of an inch; a humanhair is approximately 150 microns).Dynamic Air Cleaners capture 98 percentof the particles in the 0.3 to 1.0 micronrange. (By the way, things like viruses, bacteria, and dust damaging to lungs arealso in the sub-micron range).
