Under the Rescue Act, further education for chimney sweeps will be required of a person carrying out chimney sweeping

A person employed by him and independetly carrying out chimney sweeping

A chimney sweep employed by a regional rescue service


Education in Finland- Further vocational

education(Chimney sweeps)- Special vocational

education(Master chimney sweeps)


The education of chimney sweeps consits of:1.sweeping flues and fireplaces2.cleaning ventilation ducts and equipment3.premilinary fire safety inspection4.customer service and entrepreneurship


1. sweeping flues and fireplaces(periods 1 and 2)

2. cleaning ventilation ducts and equipment(periods 4, 5 and 6)

3. premilinary fire safety inspection(period 3)

4. customer service and leading a company(periods 7 and 8)


The education of master chimney sweeper consits of:

1.sweeping and maintenance of heating systems2.cleaning and maintenance of ventilation systems3.customer service and leading a company


1. sweeping and maintenance of heating systems(periods 1 and 2) a written plan and a practical exercise

2. cleaning and maintenance of ventilation systems(periods 1 and 2) a written plan and a practical exercise

3. customer service and leading a company(periods 1 and 2) a written plan of leading a company


Apprenticeship training- Serves employer´s, entrepreneur

´s and employee´s needs

- Organized on cooperation with working places and educational establishments


Apprenticeship training- Contract can be made: - to a person who already works for

the employer- to a new person


Apprenticeship training- Contract:- Is based on a contract of

employment of a definite duration- Shall be governet by collective

bargaining agreement that defines the terms and conditions of employment(salary for example)


Apprenticeship training- An entrepreneur can also educate

himself through apprenticeship training

- Contract between entrepreneur and apprenticeship training office is based on a contract of education- not collective bargaining agreement


Apprenticeship training- Is open to anyone who at the

time of signing the contract has reached the age of 15

- No upper age limits


Apprenticeship training- The periods of study is from 4

months to 3 years(depends on the qualification)

- Individual study program- The apprentice spends 70-80% of

his training time in the workplace


Apprenticeship training- Training at work is supplemented

with theoretical studies in education establishments


Tests and Evaluation - Finland has been developing

competence based qualifications since 1994.

- Every apprentice takes part in competence tests

- Evaluation is done by employer, worker and education sector(teacher for example).


The theoretical periods are held in three different small cities in Finland

- Jalasjärvi- Suonenjoki- Valkeakoski


The costs of education(costs 2009):- Futher vocational education- Theory weeks 2400€ + competence

tests 1200€ total 3600€- Special vocational education(Master

chimney sweeps)- Theory weeks 2700€ + competence

tests 1500€ total 4200€


The costs of education:- Every apprentice pays his or her

´s costs of travelling, accommondation and meals
