Ref. No. TERnet/TSWC/Vol.1/09 27th January, 2012Vice Chancellors and Principals,Higher Education and Research InstitutionsTanzania.

RE: TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAMPUS NETWORK ENGINEERS AND SYSTEM

    ADMINISTRATORS: 16TH 20TH APRIL 2012.

During the study carried out by Tanzania Education and Research Network (TERNET) to 43 higherlearning and research institutions, it was observed that most of them require assistance in designing andmaintaining campus networks. Based on this reality, TERNET engineers have been assisting memberinstitutions in Dar to setup their networks and connect them to the network operations center (NOC) atCOSTECH. At the moment, 8 institutions: College of Business Education, Hubert Kairuki MemorialUniversity, Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Open University of Tanzania, Ardhi University,Dar es salaam Institute of Technology, Institute of Social Work and National Accreditation for TechnicalEducation (NACTE) have been connected to the NOC.

TERNET has been assisting member institutions in building internal IT capacity by arranging hands onpractical trainings. In cooperation with the largest manufacturer of networking equipments (CISCO), thefirst such training took place in Tanzania, June last year, in parallel with the African Network OperatorsGroup (AfNOG) activities.

Recently, an MoU (with training component) has been signed between TERNET and the Internet2(www.internet2.edu/) of USA. Through that MoU, TERNET is now organizing a second training incollaboration with Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) (http://www.nsrc.org/) of University ofOregon.

The training will take place from 16 th to 20th April 2012, at Dar Es Salaam Institute of Technology(DIT), ASA hall. This is a hands on training, delivered by experienced trainers who have conducted

similar trainings elsewhere in the world as indicated in the following link (https://nsrc.org/workshops/).

The training will cover 2 tracks running in parallel, with a maximum of 30 participants in each track:Campus Network Design for Network Engineers and Architects, and Linux/Unix System Administrationfor System Administrators. Draft course contents are available at https://nsrc.org/workshops/2012/ternet-nsrc/ where the minimum requirement is basic knowledge of TCP/IP protocols. A laptop is a must foreach participant. You may contact us at [email protected] OR Dr. Amos Nungu at 0787-716778 if furtherclarification about the training is required.
