we're seeing this migration from broadcast to digital. Instead of surrendering that audience, we help keep and maintain it by allowing stations to push listeners to their own digital platform. It's unique, hyper-local, consumer-sought content on-demand and with complete ubiquity." Functionally, stations drive listeners to a mobile offering integrated into their own app or to a white-label GeoTraffic app

that's been branded to the station. Individual roadways are displayed as icons (see left) and tapping one generates a regularly updated audio report specific to that thoroughfare. GeoTraffic's broadcasters can voice the reports, or station talent can handle the job. There's also the capacity to generate revenue through geo-targeted ads within the reports. "We're bringing the spoken word ad model for traditional media to the digital platform," Rizzo notes. GeoTraffic is currently available in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles and more markets are expected. The service is

free and there are no inventory requirements; revenue from in-line ads is shared between GeoTraffic and the station. The company also offers traditional broadcast options. Total Up: More than 2,000 stations in 200+ markets use the services of iHeartMedia-owned Total Traffic & Weather Network and EVP Gary Larkin says there's good reason. "We have the most robust network of traffic gathering tools and resources in the industry and deliver the most accurate traffic incident data available," he says. "There are 16 local operations centers operating 24/7, and more than 800 professional traffic reporters monitoring resources in each market." Those resources include emergency services, departments of transportation, traffic cameras, aircraft, social media and floating car/cellular data, which has become the backbone of municipal traffic systems in recent years. Larkin has no doubt that broadcast reports are still relevant. "Eighty percent of commuters expect daily traffic, weather, sports and news," he says. "Americans spend an average of two-and-a-half hours a day dealing with traffic conditions and listener engagement surges 22% in the minutes surrounding traffic

George Birge and Cody Cooper of Big Machine’s Waterloo Revival discuss their most influential music:1. LeAnn Rimes, Blue: George: That album was huge for me because my dad had it stuck in the CD player for 10 years.2. Ryan Adams, Heartbreaker: Cody: That album tapped into

something we try to capture with our songwriting, which is honesty and saying something most people would be embarrassed to say to a friend in real life. 3. Eric Church: Cody: He’s always had his own sound. His lyrics flow. He reminds me of Willie Nelson in that what he says isn’t always synched with the beat. 4. Willie Nelson: George: He had this raw thing. He was not the most radio-sounding guy but he was an amazing storyteller. And you always know it’s Willie playing guitar because he has that signature sound.5. George Strait: George: My mom tells me I’m half named after my dad and half named after George Strait. My parents were two stepping to him in San Marcos, TX before he was who he is today. He has one of the purest voices in country music. He’s a class act.• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: George: Brandy Clark’s 12 Stories album. When it started getting nominated I looked it up – and it was one of the best albums I’d heard.• An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: Cody: Reggae. I get the “feel-good” atmosphere of it, but I can’t get into it.• An album you listened to incessantly: George: Matchbox Twenty’s Yourself Or Someone Like You.• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Cody: LunchMoney Lewis’ “Bills.” We’ve been jamming to this non-stop on our road trips lately.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: George: Anything Justin Timberlake. He’s got a crazy vocal and he’s always coming up with super-original melodies. It’s straight pop candy but it’s addictive.

reports. With commuting times continuing to grow in most markets, [they're] increasingly important." TTWN's services are available for barter to every station in the top 50 markets, a majority in the top 100 and several in the top 150. Users can also take advantage of TTWN's standalone mobile app. Self Service: Handling traffic on your own is still an option, but staying accurate and compelling requires focus. "Reports should be as short as possible while still covering the major issues," says Albright & O'Malley & Brenner's Becky Brenner. "Always start with the location; region first, then specifics." Normal slowdowns should take a backseat to things less ordinary, Brenner says. "Focus on the major incidents and always provide alternatives," she advocates. "The best traffic reporters are good at providing alternate routes in the moment that save listeners time." Seattle traffic reporter Kimi Kline is a Total Traffic & Weather Network employee who services eight area stations including Country KWJJ/Portland. She handles two of

those live and Brenner says she's worth emulating. "She understands how to do traffic effectively and conversationally," Brenner explains. "And she has the ability to be spontaneous and witty, which is hard to find." Kline says focus on the listener's perspective can't be overstated. "Traffic is very personal to the people sitting in it," she asserts. "Use your voice to show severity and

empathy and be careful to not over-sensationalize every collision. Listeners need to build trust with you." Social media is a powerful tool. "I have TweetDeck up all day and am constantly monitoring listeners and other public agencies in real-time," she says of the platform, which manages tweets across multiple Twitter accounts. "I can put them into lists to make them easier to sift through. And I tweet major incidents to my followers @KimiKline. I love building relationships with listeners through Twitter because they'll send me tips and pictures of incidents they see throughout the day. It's great." "Just being an advocate for drivers goes a long way," Kline adds. "And if you're not having fun, maybe you should try something else! When a rendering truck loses its load on a freeway, you have to laugh and tell listeners to roll up their windows, too!"

Wheelhouse’s Granger Smith puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KSCS/Dallas. And then KPLX/Dallas came around and they had the wolf howl. I would flip back and forth between those stations. I was a freshman in college when I first heard myself on the radio. It was on KORA/Bryan, TX. I had visited the station and given them a CD. I was studying in my dorm room one day and the alarm clock radio started playing my song. I

freaked out and ran up and down the halls. I’ve had a national touring infrastructure in place for the last three years. When I signed with Wheelhouse, our fall was booked. We bypassed the traditional radio tour and built stops around the existing tour dates. I love the visits that go beyond the conference room performance. Ginny Rogers at WKLB/Boston asked if I could come by the [Tufts Medical Center’s] Floating Hospital for Children and play some songs for the kids. To me, that was an amazing moment and I loved helping them give back to the community like that. My favorite and least favorite person to travel with is my brother, Tyler – who’s also my manager. We’ve been working together for about 10 years. At one time he was the merch guy, the tour manager, the manager, the booking agent. Because we’re brothers we have that love/hate relationship. Some days we click; some days we butt heads and don’t agree on anything. On those days, the band and crew know to stay away from us. When I traveled in a van we lived on truck stop food. You could make a meal out of beef jerky, a bag of chips and a stick of cheddar cheese. I would love to have dinner with my dad at Mary’s Cafe in Strawn, TX. We would get large chicken fried steaks with fries and iced tea. Earl Dibbles, Jr. is my alter ego so I see redneck things every day. I was in Portland, ME last night and had a big wad of Red Man chew in my mouth, as Earl Dibbles, Jr. during the show. A girl in the front row said she wanted that dip, so I dislodged it from my mouth and handed it to her. And then she put it in her mouth.

vision, she said, "So often, what we do, he did it first. And so often what we do, he did it best." She told of the recording session for Merle Haggard's "A Place To Fall Apart" and how Martin's guitar work, though not overtly flashy, perfectly suited the song. "Merle looked at another musician, Roy Nichols and said, 'Roy, I believe me or you could have played that.' Roy said, 'Well, maybe now we could, but not until that guy showed us how first.'" Grady's son Joshua Martin was composed and flashed dry humor in accepting his father's medallion. "We've had a better turnout than any family reunion we've ever had," he said. Referencing the likelihood his typically taciturn dad might have used

the occasion to share his Christian faith, Joshua read a bible verse (Psalms 144:9) and noted its reference to a string instrument played with a pick. "So I guess that means there's picking in heaven," he said. "Now we really want to go, right?" Praising Grady as "the

greatest guitar player ever to live," Joshua also called him "the best dad that a kid could ever have. May the name Grady Martin live on forever and always in the Country Music Hall of Fame." The Brown Sound: Offering tribute to the late Jim Ed and attending Maxine and Bonnie Brown were Carolyn Martin and Chris Scruggs on "Looking Back To See," The Isaacs on "The Three Bells" and Dierks Bentley on "Pop A Top." Stepping in for an ailing Bill Anderson for the induction, Hall of Famer Bobby Bare was soft-spoken and heartfelt. "A lot of people don't know Jim Ed was a legitimate chef ... a wonderful friend and a true gentleman," Bare said. "Maxine, sweet Maxine," he said, pausing for effect. "Maxine got a mouth on her. If you don't really want to know the answer to a question, don't ever ask Maxine because she's going to give you the full answer. And all the guys I know instantly fell in love with Bonnie. Including ..." he paused again "... myself, Elvis and a whole lot of other guys."

Explaining their impact, Bare said, "Chet [Atkins] told me they were the greatest sibling harmony he had ever heard in his life. And that means a lot because Chet produced the Everly Brothers." First to accept was Jim Ed's widow Becky Brown, who retold the story of Anderson, CMA CEO Sarah Trahern and others presenting his medallion to him in June. "He was so excited and so thankful that they took the time to do that," she said. "I had 54 wonderful years with Jim Ed and I just praise God and give him all the glory and the praise for a blessed life." Bonnie Brown repeatedly told the audience, "I'm not going to cry," at least once through tears, as she accepted her medallion. She introduced her family with notable pride. "We've got doctors everywhere," as well as a granddaughter who is an astrophysics and engineering double major. "I don't know where she got the smarts," Bonnie said. "Of course I hate to turn this over to Maxine," she added before leaving the podium.

"The Browns made a lot of sacrifices," Maxine said, pointing out that their families took the brunt of it. Among those she thanked were KKUS/Tyler, TX's Tom Perryman, a Country Radio Hall of Famer and the group's manager, as well as his wife Billie. "They're pushing 90 and they still have their hair and teeth!" she said, beginning to live up to Bare's introduction. "I asked Billie not long ago, 'How old do you have to be before you stop enjoying sex?' She said, 'Honey you gotta ask somebody older than me.'" It was Maxine's final comment that really brought the house down, however. "This award erases everything we've been through," she said, going on to talk about a fall that broke her hip and several bones in her leg. "They never were able to fix them," she said. "I think my surgeon was drunk. The only good thing that came out of that – I got a permanent screw." Hearts On Fire: Final inductees the Oak Ridge Boys were celebrated by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jeff Hanna, subbing for a travel-waylaid Chris and Morgane Stapleton on "Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight." Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood offered "I'll Be True To You," and Duane Allen's daughter Jamie, husband Paul Martin and four children – the Martin Family Circus – surprised their father/grandfather to perform a spirited "Elvira." Notably, it was eight-year-old daughter Tallant who took the iconic bass part, igniting the crowd.

Hall of Famer Kenny Rogers discussed his abiding friendship with the group in bringing the four onstage for the induction. "In a lifetime and career of incredible things, this is the most incredible thing that's ever happened to the Oak Ridge Boys," Bonsall said. "We're family, man. It's always been family. We've tried to run our group that way ... doing things right. Being honest all the time like our parents taught us. Treat people right. I really think that's why we're here today." Allen's remarks hit on three themes – luck, fortune and blessings. He told of walking into manager Don Light's office after getting out of the Army, auditioning and getting the job on the spot and saving the Oaks from an imminent split. Growing up on a farm with no running water, he said. "We didn't have a bucket list. It was a bucket to haul the water or the milk from milking the cows. I thank God for his many blessings and for my bucket list being full tonight."

Sterban acknowledged his creator first and foremost. "I want to thank Him for giving us the ability to sing and harmonize together," he said. "This is a night we'll never forget and I don't think we'll ever be the same after tonight." Finally, Golden recalled the inspiration offered by his family in rural Alabama. "It was the music that touched my soul and stirred it deep inside," he said. "It didn't take long to figure out I'd rather sing than pick cotton." Golden also pointed to the future. "We're all healthy and ... by golly, we're still singing as good as we ever have." Joined onstage by their fellow inductees and the evening's performers, the Oaks led the room in "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" as their fellow Hall of Fame members filed down to the front. The moment recalled Bare's words from earlier in the evening: "Today we're all winners because we're all famous forever on the wall in an unbroken circle." And that circle, that family, was joyfully just a little bit bigger. –Chuck Aly CAC
