Duetothcstcadilyincrcasingmanufacturingandpcrsonnelcosts,incrcasingproductivityhasrecentlybecomeastringentnecessity.Electricaldriveshaveconsidcrablycontributedtosolvingthisproblemintheareaofthemaehinetoolindustry.Theyrepresentacost-efficientengineeringtechnique,whichiscconomicalevenforuseonfeedunitsthatwerepreviouslymovedmanuallyorwithacentraldrive.Also,today'ssimpletooperate,freelyprogrammablenumericalcontrolsrequireindependentlycontrolleddriveswithawidespeedrange.

Siemenshassignificantlycontributedtothistransitionfrommechanicalandhydraulicsystemstoelectricalones,andhasbroughtonthemarkethighlydynamicconverter-fedservodrives.Duetotheirsimple,robustconstruction,gooddynamicproperties,aswellasthcirhighdurability,thesedrivesareopenedtoawidefieldofapplications.Thcfeedunitsofnumericallycontrolledmaehinetoolsandtracingmachinesarepositionedalongprogrammedpathsorwithpositioncontrolloops.Theincreasingautomationputseverstrictcrdcmandsonthesepositioncontrolloops.Thevelocityandtheaccuracyofthefeedmovementscanbesignificantlyincreasedwiththeelectricaldrive.

Forthefurtherdevelopmentofthisengineeringtechniquc.SiemensAGspon-soredspecialresearchstudiescenteredonpositioncontrolandfeeddrivesattheUniversityofStuttgart,InstituteofControlThcoryforMaehineToolsandManufacturingEquipment.ThetheoreticaltcchnicalbasicsforpositioncontroloptimizationhavebeenworkedoutatthisInstitute,andproceduresforpracticaimeasurementsonappliedpositioncontrolloopshavebeendevel-oped.ThelongpracticaiexperiencethatSiemenshasinthisarcawasanimportantpartoftheproject.ThepresentvolumesummarizcstheresultsofthescientificworkatthcUniversity,andthcpracticaiexperienceofstart-ups,design,development,andconstructionofthesedrives.
