Fish are smart, sometimes too smart, but the predatory anglers are circling and every so often you have days that are quite simply “mind blowing”.Quiet days are often the result of environmental factors, seasonal fluctuations or missing the change of light early in the morning or late in the evening. In the north the snapper fishing has been challenging and one reason that was suggested to me was a late spawn caused by a slower increase in water temperature.
Yesterday I was part of a charter boat crew out of Auckland and we were plagued by juvenile kingfish. Admittedly we also managed to take home a feed of snapper but we were
surrounded by schools of small kahawai and kingfish.The Captains belief is that it has indeed been challenging but we could be in for a late flurry. Those of us who were able to employed a strayline rig while the beginners utilized the standard ledger rig with a sinker on the bottom and two droppers. The bait selection consisted of pilchards and squid and both were devoured often by small fish.
A handy rule to remember in these situations is “big bait, big fish” and add to that hooks in the 8/0 plus category if you want to avoid an endless process of midgets. The predatory capability of your average angler is enhanced by the array of choices available at the terminal end of your
tackle. I have friends who refuse to fish any other way than with soft baits and others who have tried soft baiting once and given up. My advice is don’t be afraid to experiment and also persevere. New techniques such as the use of soft baits or slow jigs can take time to master. On slow days I add small baits to slow jig hooks and often have great success.Over Christmas my family and I were in the North and I fished in the Bay of Islands. I have several favourite spots in the “Bay” and late one afternoon
we cruised out on to a favoured patch of foul ground. It took me two attempts to get the boat in the right position with the fish behind us, down current and in front of the structure. We anchored, drifted back in to position and I told my cobber to throw out a soft bait before dropping the berley.
He heaved the soft bait out 40 metres behind the stern and put the rod in the holder. As he lowered the berley something grabbed the soft bait. Mr Rod Holder had done it again! It is amazing how often that works and of course Craig will always say it was pure skill.That fish turned out to be a 25 pound snapper that currently sits in the taxidermists freezer.Predatory anglers we may be but it is nice to have a bit of luck. I also had a very good reason to change my outboard motor recently. The other brand was superb and I have always said my choice would be either Yamaha or Honda. Well, I now have a Honda 250HP silver bullet which replaces the other 225. Honda have always claimed significant fuel savings which I confess I treated with some scepticism. The reality is that I am getting a fuel saving of at least 25%. It is massive!
As I sit here I can see my Surtees sitting in the shed and there also sits that big beautiful motor beckoning me to head out and start it up. I get an extra days fishing out of a tank of gas and that is an incentive to hang up the sign that says, “Gone Fishin!”
