Thank you so much

to our Golf and Half

Marathon

committees for

getting us off to a

great start to our

years’ activities. It

was a great day out

on the golf course and even better, I

successfully won one of Patty Webb’s

excellent Saskatoon pies in the live

auction. Did I miss the snow from last

year? Not that much. A big thanks to the

Golf Committee and all the volunteers

who made this day a success.

Being on the gate for the Half Marathon

is a real eye opener - some of the 900

runners jogging into the market were not

even breathing hard. It was very

impressive. This is a great way to open

our market season as it brings in a

different group of people, many whom

have not been exposed to MRAS before.

Great job and thanks to both the

Marathon Committee and the many

volunteers that help to make this event

more successful every year.

On July 1st we will be celebrating Canada

Day with the running of the 110th

Millarville Races. This is always a well-

attended event and I encourage you to

get to the track early. I am looking

forward to another great day at the

Races.

The Board and staff are planning to meet

with each event committee after each

event to determine what went well and

what areas require our collective efforts

to make better. We are acutely aware of

the time and effort that our volunteers

put into these events and this is our way

of ensuring that we are making the best

of everyone’s time.

Unfortunately, for personal reasons, Jill

Oliver and Sean Nesbit have resigned

from the Board. We thank you both for

the contribution you have made to MRAS.

As a result we are looking for individuals

who are interested in being involved in

MRAS and would be interested in serving

on the board of directors If you would

like additional information please feel

free to e-mail or call myself or one of the

other board members.

A final note, due to health issues, our

concession operator had to leave us after

the first market. The staff is working

diligently to insure that we have

sufficient food options at our market and

events. We ask for your patience and

feedback while we work through this

challenging issue. I would also like to

thank the many vendors who have

stepped up or are going to be stepping

up to offer food options during this time.

Thank you all very much.

On behalf of the MRAS Golf Committee, we would like to thank all of our volunteers, sponsors and golfers who

participated and supported our second annual MRAS Golf Tournament on Monday June 8, 2015. We enjoyed a

beautiful day at Turner Valley Golf Club, not a cloud in the sky and a high of 28 Celsius. It was a polar opposite

day from our inaugural tournament last September. Thanks to our MRAS supporters the tournament was a

huge success, raising funds close to $12,000. This brings us closer to our goal for the upgrade of our water

treatment facility. This critical piece of racetrack infrastructure ensures we will have plenty of safe drinking

water for the over 100,000 people who visit us each year.

The Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society is a not for profit society that exists only because of the support,

generosity and participation of people like you. We would especially like to thank and recognize our

remarkable group of volunteers for this event: Marlene Bester, Rick Charlton, Norma Dawson, Catherine

Duerholt, Gail Dzuiba, Bob Dyck, Anita Gaylard, Bill Jackson, Judy Kenny, Janine Lewis, Myrna McKay, Edith

Morlidge, Ralph Onciul, Carol Poffenroth, Kim Trudeau and Patty Webb.

Thank you once again and we look forward to seeing you on the golf course next year.

MRAS GOLF COMMITTEE

Sincerely,

Catherine, Bill, Edith, Gail, Jean, Kelly, Kim, Rick and Suzanne

4th Annual Millarville “Run To the Farmers’ Market” Half Marathon

More than 900 cinnamon bun eating runners/walkers registered for the 4th Annual Millarville “Run To the

Farmers’ Market” Half Marathon—that’s triple the amount of participants from the original race day in 2012.

“We would have had a few hundred more, but we chose to close registrations early due to some capacity issues

on the pathway in Turner Valley,” said Race Director Rick Charlton. “We wanted to ensure everyone who

registered had a good time”.

Participants were running or walking a 21.1 KM half marathon and two person half marathon relay --legs of 9 KM

and 12.1 KM--as well as the rapidly growing COBS Bread Cinnamon Bun Run 8-Miler (12.8 KM). All events started

in Black Diamond and all finished at the 33rd season opening day of the Millarville Farmers’ Market. The half

marathon and relay participants also visited Turner Valley.

The original goal of the event was to bolster attendance on the opening season day of the Farmers’ Market. There

were 4,000 + at the Racetrack for the event/Farmers’ Market.

“In the first year of the event, there were only two participants with Millarville addresses,” said Mr. Charlton.

“This year, there were 32. We want to be seen as promoting health and wellness in our rural community so it’s

gratifying to see those numbers increasing every year”.

Participation in the 8-Miler, with its eclectic cinnamon bun eating category, doubled from 2014. COBS Bread

owners Kelly and Lee Hodgins brought about 1,400 cinnamon buns to the event and went through most of them,

primarily at the finish line, but also on the race course at two cinnamon bun stations.

The Millarville Half Marathon event would like to thank the following sponsors for their great support: Sobey's

Okotoks (David Gilbert & family), Foothills Animal Hospital, Okotoks (Dr. Miranda Logan), Okotoks GMC, Okotoks

Nissan, Country Food Mart AG Foods, Black Diamond (Mark Muller), Optimize Consulting, Okotoks (Mark

Crocker), COBS Bread, Okotoks (Kelly & Lee Hodgins), Millarville Recreation Board, Franklin Templeton, RBC

Global Asset Management, RBC Dominion Securities, Calgary South, JKR Excavating, Essex Lease Financial

Consulting, and Bar T-5 Agra Services, Millarville.

Thanks as well for prizes/awards from Impact Magazine, Running Room, 5 Peaks Trail Running Series, Goodlife

Fitness Okotoks, Diamond Fitness & Wellness in Black Diamond, Okotoks Dawgs, Original Joes, Luc's European

Meats, Janet Horbacio Photography and Classic Source For Sports in Okotoks.

MILLARVILLE COMMUNITY LIBRARY

SUMMER HOURS WEDNESDAYS FROM 10:30 am-7:30 pm

We will again be offering a Summer Reading Program for the children over the summer. It is so

important that kids keep up their reading skills during summer break from school, and we offer crafts

and games to enhance their library experience. It is a drop-in program and runs from July 8th to August

26th. The library begins its summer hours on Wednesday, July 8th and we are open from 10:30 am to

7:30 pm. The week of July 1st we will be closed on Wednesday but will be open Tuesday, June 30th from

10:30 am-7:30 pm. We will resume our regular hours on Tuesday, September 1st.

We have a new art exhibit in the library and it will be here until July 15th. Lynn Malin describes herself

primarily as a landscape artist but she is not bound by any one artistic genre or mode of expression.

This exhibition Out of Bounds: The art of Lynn Malin provides a survey of her artistic career, one of

Edmonton’s most exuberant artists. The viewer will be taken into the mind, heart and soul of a working

artist, encountering the wonder that can be realized when a person takes the risk and has the courage

to go “out of bounds”. This exhibit is sponsored by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling

Exhibition Program.
