DAVE SELF Dave Self has been part of Sam Houston’s successful track and fi eld program since 2005, taking over as the Bearkats’ head coach in July 2009. During his tenure with Sam Houston track and fi eld, the Bearkats have known nothing but success. Both Sam Houston’s men and women captured Southland Conference outdoor track and fi eld crowns in 2005 and 2006. The two seasons after that, Self helped direct the women to a pair of Southland Conference Indoor Championships as well as an Outdoor title in 2008. During his fi rst season as head coach in 2010, the Sam Houston men placed third at the Southland Conference indoor men’s championship. Michael Courtney highlighted the season by becoming the university’s fi rst NCAA Division I indoor All-American. Courtney fi nished fourth in the 400 meter dash. As the Bearkat coach in charge of sprinters and hurdlers, Self has watched as his runners have produced 24 school records on 58 diff erent occasions. Also, his ath-letes have racked up a total of 207 all-conference honors along with 31 individual or relay Southland Conference fi rst-place fi nishes.

In 2008 he was named the Southland Conference Indoor Coach of the Year, becoming the fi rst assistant coach in the confer-ence to earn such an honor. Self previously served as head track and fi eld coach at Garden City Community College from 1996-2002. There he coached 123 athletes who earned National Junior College Athletic Association All America honors. He also produced 21 national individual champions and one of his athletes was a member of the 2004 United States Olympic Track and Field team.

JESSE PARKERJesse Parker coaches the Bearkat middle and long distance runners and serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Track & Field / Cross Country program. Since joining the staff in 2003, his runners have earned All-Southland Conference 39 times, won 12 SLC individual titles, garnered NCAA All-Region

cross country honors fi ve times and have broken school records in every endurance event. At the 2006 SLC outdoor, senior Brandon Moseley was the men’s high point scorer as the both the men and women won their back-to-back titles. In 2005 Sarah Hershman became the fi rst SHSU female distance runner to win an individual SLC title since 1990 when she won the 3,000m steeplechase. The men scored in every event, including a 1-2-3-4 fi nish in the 5,000m run and Raul Villarreal was named as the high point scorer of the meet after winning the 10000m Run, the 3000m Steeplechase, and the 5000m Run. In 2004, four Bearkat men placed among the top 10 in the Southland cross country meet to earn All-SLC honors. A native of Lockhart, Parker received his Bachelor of Sci-ence in Kinesiology in August, 2005 and his Master of Arts in May 2007, both from Sam Houston State University. Parker completed his USATF Level II Endurance Certifi cation in July of 2008 and his Level II Jumps Certifi cation in July of 2009.

KEITH HERSTON Keith Herston coaches the horizontal jumps and combined events. In his fi rst season at SHSU, he coached 10 All-Southland athletes including conference champions Ambra McCuin in triple jump and CJ Patterson in long jump. In addition Chris Gilchrist triple jumped 51’11.75” indoors, breaking a 11 year old indoor school

record by over a foot, and 51’6.5” outdoors, to topple a 12 year old outdoor school record. Herston is responsible for team academics, assisting in re-cruiting, travel coordination, administrative duties, and aiding in home meet setup. Before becoming a Bearkat, Herston served 2 years at Au-burn University in Auburn, Alabama as a graduate assistant where he completed his Masters Degree in 2009. During his time there he worked with men’s and women’s javelin throwers and combined events while also working in the developmental training of pro-level athletes. Herston also assisted in compli-ance, daily operations, travel, budget, and hosting home meets while at Auburn. Herston is a 2007 graduate of the University of Alabama where he received his Bachelors Degree in Human Environ-mental Sciences while he was a member of the men’s track and fi eld team, competing in the horizontal jumps. While there, he was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

JON TIPTONJon Tipton, now in his sec-ond year of coaching, will coach the Bearkat throwers after a successful career competing for Sam Hous-ton State University. Tipton capped an outstanding se-nior season by fi nishing 9th place at the USATF National championship with a throw of 58.80m (192’11”), missing fi nals by 10 inches. During

his senior year he also competed in the NCAA championships after winning the NCAA Midwest regional championship with a throw of 58.60m (192’3”). He became the third Bearkat in history to win a regional title. He also won the Southland Conference discus throw with a throw of 58.17m (190’10”). He currently holds the school record in the discus with a throw of 59.90m (196’6”). Prior to his senior year, Tipton also reached the Midwest regional championships in the javelin in 2007 and the discus in 2008. In his fi rst year of coaching, Jon Tipton helped Christina Webb to a Southland Conference runner up fi nish in the shot put with a throw of 48’6”, this currently ranks #2 all time for the Bearkats in the shot put. She also fi nished in 4th place indoors in the shot put with a throw of 47’ 2.5”. Jenny Zoch and Christina Webb also scored in the indoor weight throw at conference with a 6th and 7th place fi nish respectively. The throwers return a talented group of athletes led by Chris Cralle (2 time Southland Conference champion in the hammer and a fi nalist in the 2010 USATF Championships) and Christina Webb (2010 Southland Conference runner up in the shot put).

CLINT BLINKAClint Blinka is returning to the SHSU Track and Field program to coach the pole vault, high jump and assist with the combined events after spending the previous 2 years as head boys track and cross country coach at Waller High School. The home for Bearkat track and fi eld is the Mer-edith and Miriam York Track Complex. The complex is named for the late Meredith and Miriam York, long time Sam Houston State track and fi eld supports. A special marker located at the entrance to Bowers Stadium for the complex was unveiled in May, 2004. The complex includes a throwing center north of Bowers Stadium and jump and pole vault areas and the running track inside Bowers Stadium. Sam Houston State University twice has been the site of the Southland Conference outdoor track and fi eld meet and annually hosts both the Meredith York Relays, an intercollegiate meet in March, and the UIL Class AAAA Regional meet in April.

Sam Houston State’s athletic teams have been nick-named “The Bearkats” since 1923 when the university’s name was changed by the Texas state legislature from Sam Houston Normal Institute to Sam Houston State Teachers College. Prior to 1923, the varsity sports teams were nick-named “The Normals.”

Early references to “Bearkats” spelled the name either “Bearcats,” “Bear Cats,” or “Bearkats.” A bearcat is said by some to be a kinkajou, a small, golden, carnivorous mam-mal that resides in the jungles of South America. It is doubt-ful those who coined the “Bearkat” nickname had either a kinkajou or a binturong in mind, however. More likely, the name came from a popular local saying of the time, “tough as a Bearkat!” Since the animal in the saying was thought more mythical than real, the spelling settled upon was “Bearkat.”

In the late 1940s, then SHSU President Harmon Low-man attempted to change the Sam Houston mascot from Bearkats to “Ravens” (after General Sam Houston’s Cherokee nickname). Mrs. Vernon Schuder reported that the alumni were polled, she voted for the raven but that “all those old Bearkats beat us out!” The current Sammy Bearkat mascot character began ap-pearing at Sam Houston State sports events in 1959.

Character Counts: We CareBearkats involved in the Huntsville Community

Bearkat student-athletes make an impact on the Huntsville community through programs organized by the Sam Houston State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. So successful have been the committee’s activities that other universities in the Southland Conference have used the group as a model for their own campus. Activities on the committee’s annual calendar include the NCAA Champs/Life Skills program; the annual homecoming parade; a mentor program with the Huntsville Independent School District (HISD); sports festivals at HISD elementary campuses; canned food drive benefi ting The Good Shepherd Mission; Rita B. Huff Animal Shelter fundraiser; pop tab drive for M. D. Anderson Cancer Center / Ronald McDonald House; and Student Life Awareness Programs (alcohol, nutrition, time and stress management, diversity). Each academic year ends with the annual All-Sports Awards Banquet sponsored, planned and hosted by the committee. The leadership role played on campus by Sam Houston stu-dent-athletes has been recognized nationally by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Bearkat athletes have served on major NCAA committees including the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference held each June at Disney World in Orlando, FL.

Beark community service activities have included “Jump Rope for Heart,” mentor programs with area schools, collecting school supplies for low income families, city park clean-up and fund-raisers for the Huntsville Safe House, Good Shepherd Mission and the Ronald McDonald House of Houston.

Student-Athlete Advisory CommitteeStudent-Athlete Advisory Committee

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a special group of representatives from each varsity sports team who work to insure a quality academic and athletic experience that will culminate in gradua-tion from the university. SAAC provides a voice for student-athletes at all levels of the uni-versity. Members assist the athletic department in establishing policies, seeking methods to develop professional skills and work habits, to facilitate peer involvement, to fulfi ll the responsibilities that are part of the privilege of being a student-athlete and to express pride in team achievements. Among the various SAAC projects are the Student-Athlete Welfare Committee; NCAA exit exam development Committee; Southland Con-ference “Twelve Days of Christmas” project; Bearkat Mentor Program; the Hall of Honor Dinner; pop tab collection for the Ronald McDonald House M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; CHAMPS/Life Skills Advisory Board, “Think Pink” breast cancer awareness drive; SAAFE House Program; Saturday’s At Sam; National Student Athlete Day and National Alcohol Awareness Week.

While winning three Southland Confer-ence Commissioner’s Cups (symbolic of the SLC’s All-Sports championship) and 11 SLC championship trophies in the past six years, Sam Houston athletes also have led the league in performance in the classroom. More Sam Houston student-athletes have earned recognition on the SLC Commis-sioner’s Academic Honor Roll than any of the 12 universities in the league during the past six years. To be recognized, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA. For eight consecutive semesters, Bearkat student-athletes have produced a grade point average higher than 2.87. That includes a record high GPA of 2.94 during the 2008 fall semester. These GPAs are marks better than the university’s general student population. Sam Houston student-athletes have posted overall GPAs of 2.30 or higher for 36 consecutive semesters. “We are extremely proud of our athletes’ achievements in the classroom and com-mend our coaching staff for the tremendous job they do in recruiting quality student-ath-letes,” Williams said. “The No. 1 goal for each of our sports teams is to have our athletes earn their Sam Houston State degrees. We are proud that 90 percent of student athletes who complete their eligibility at Sam Hous-ton earn their degree.”

The Bearkat athletic program gets a winning edge from its nationally recognized strength and condi-tioning program. Kyle Speer and his conditioning program have been honored by American Football Magazine for their part in preparing the more than 390 athletes who compete in 17 sports for Sam Houston State, winners of three Southland Conference Commis-sioner’s Cup All-Sports titles and 10 Southland sports championships in the past seven years. The 11,000 square foot Ron Randleman Strength and Fitness Center opened in 2006. The center con-sists of coaches’ offi ces, dressing rooms and a 9,000 square foot area for weights. “The preparation for all championships begins with a great work ethic and commitment in weight training and conditioning,” Bearkat football head coach Willie Fritz said. “At Sam Houston, we have state-of-the-art training facilities and an outstanding staff to help us accomplish our goals.”
