Description

Poster design for an exhibition about a typical Brazilian music style: “chorinho”.

Heitor Villa-LobosHeitor Villa-Lobos (Portuguese pronunciation: March 5, 1887 – November 17, 1959) was a Brazilian composer, described as “the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music”. Villa-Lobos has become the best-known and most significant Latin American composer to date. He wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas Brasileiras (“Brazilian Bachian-pieces”).

Portrait of Hermeto Pascoal, a highly creative Brazilian musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist, he is known among his pair as The Sorcerer.

Hermeto Pascoal, The SorcererAccording to Wikipedia, Hermeto Pascoal, a Brazilian musician and multi-instrumentalist, caught the international public’s attention with an appear-ance on Miles Davis’s 1971 album “Live-Evil”, which featured Pascoal on several pieces (which he also composed). Davis has said that Pascoal was “the most impressive musician in the world”. Later collaborations involved fellow Brazil-ian musicians Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. From the late 1970s onward he mostly led his own groups, playing at many prestigious venues, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1979. Pictorial cards for alternative communication These illustrations were developed for the project “Communis” sponsored by SENAI (Brazilian organisation that deals with industrial training). Com-munis is a graphic system formed by printed cards with images and text. It is targeted to industrial managers who has to deal with employees that have speech difficulties (e.g. brain

damages, intellectual deficiency, autism). In graphic terms, there is an obvious influence from Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz work for the Isotype. However, later on these drawings had to be changed in order to fit to the in-house designer’s style.

This is a small sample of my collection of more than 300 illustrated manuals. The start point was my PhD research, which has a chapter on “graphic rep-resentations of motion for instructional purposes”. Besides working as a source of ideas, the collection became a topic of “show and tell” presentations at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication (The University of Reading, United Kingdom) and Department of Design (Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil).

A small sample of instructional volvelles about all sort of subjects: geography, sewing machine features, Portuguese grammar, maths, birth control and so on.
