Town of Sahuarita Fiesta History

In 2004, the Town of Sahuarita was preparing to celebrate its tenth anniversary of incorporation. The Town Manager and Town Council agreed that this event should be a huge celebration marking the incor-poration and looking to the future. The Town of Sahuarita Parks and Recreation Department took on the task and this was the birth of what is now called “Fiesta Sahuarita.”

At its inception, Fiesta Sahuarita included a handful of government safety booths, a few local non-profi t vendors, and some music and his-torical information. The Town provided free maps, the Sahuarita Magazine and gave t-shirts to the patrons. However, minimal partici-pation and inclement weather chal-lenged the Parks and Recreation staff. In 2004, long-time Sahuarita resident, Mayor Charles Oldham, who was also the Mayor during the time of incorporation, noted that nearly all of the 300 participants that participated were huddled in the main tent all in good spirits. He remarked that the patrons were enjoying the Town birthday cake as quarter size raindrops poured all around them. Soon after, the Town

of Sahuarita Parks and Recreation Department realized their biggest challenge for future Fiestas was go-ing to be meeting the increasing demands of the community with a population explosion that more than tripled to over 25,000 local residents today.

2010 Fiesta SahuaritaThe 2010 Fiesta Sahuarita is ex-

pected to be bigger and better than ever. With over 6,000 in attendance in 2009, we are expecting even more this year. There will be 60 vendors, including food, non-profi ts, local businesses, games, and crafts. There will be live entertainment, local

group performances, infl atables for the youth, games and activities, and much more for all. The Sahuarita Teen Advisory Council will also be coordinating a skating competition at the skate spot on site during the event. The Fiesta Sahuarita Com-mittee is dedicated to working hard to bring the community the greatest event of the year. The 2010 Fiesta Sahuarita will take place at Anamax Park on September 25, from 3-8 p.m.

STAC is an advisory committee of youth that brings teen issues to the attention of the Town of Sahuarita Council. This committee encour-ages teen involvement through an infused sense of leadership, citizen-ship, and involvement in the Town of Sahuarita.

This will be accomplished through organized events, encour-

aging unity in the teen commu-nity, and networking with other organizations.

The council meets the 1st and the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Hall Council Chambers (meetings and dates are subject to change, please call to confi rm meeting time and date.)

We will celebrate the achievements of those who participated in the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge as well as showcased other family fun activities in celebration of National Parks & Recreation month. Remember to mark your calendars for Fiesta Sahuarita, the annual Town of Sahuarita birthday party, on September 25. This is one

party you will not want to miss!The six Town of Sahuarita parks make it fun to

be outdoors, so I hope you will take the opportu-nity to explore all that they have to offer. Walking trails, ball fi elds, skate spots, fi shing, and off leash dog parks are just a few of the many amenities our parks have to offer. At our Anamax Park Rec-reation Center, you can join one of our special interest classes, fi tness programs, or adult sports leagues. Your youngsters can participate in one

of our many youth programs, including our dy-namic After School program. We strive to offer programs that provide benefi ts of better health, socialization, coordination, and just plain fun.

This event will take place on Au-gust 7 & 8 at the Sahuarita Lake Park 9 a.m.-2 p.m. weather permitting. Ca-noe days is a FREE event and takes place on the south end of the Sahua-rita Lake Park. 6-12. This program runs from school dismissal to 6 p.m. We provide a safe and fun environment for children to participate in various recreational activities. The cost for this program is $175 per calendar month. This is a state licensed child care program, lic # CDC-11418.

◗ Co-ed Softball LeagueAttention all softball lovers! The Town of Sa-

huarita will host the Fall Softball League on Au-gust 9, 2010 to November 18, 2010. This league consists of two divisions: Men’s Slow Pitch and Co-Ed Slow Pitch. The league and teams are sanctioned by the Amateur Softball Association. There are twelve available slots open per divi-sion, on a fi rst come, fi rst serve basis. The fee is $300 per team for a 12 game season and a playoff. Games will be played at Anza Trail Park at 6:30, 7:35 & 8:40 p.m. Players must be 18 years old or older. This dog obedience training is provided by Central Pet in Amado. It is designed for dogs 4 months of age and older who have proof of rabies and other necessary shots. Courtesy and respect for

others, one’s self and for

your country.

A mix of local residents

agree that those are key ele-

ments of modern concerns

about etiquette, society’s

standards, and long-held

traditions that many hold

near and dear.

As time marches on, older

generations see new trends

evolve in clothing, lan-

guage and manners, several

Green Valley and Sahuarita

residents point out. And the

desert Southwest culture

certainly embraces a more

casual lifestyle than those

often found in large cities

back East, for example.

Some folks recognize the

reasons, and benefits, for

such changes and adapt to

them. Others may choose

to hold on to civilities they

learned as youngsters.

What is worth hanging on

to across the nation?

Placing hand over heart

during the Pledge of Alle-

giance and removing hats

from heads during “The

Star-Spangled Banner” re-

main cherished traditions

to many folks.

Personally, says Green

Valley resident Ed Clarke,

“I subscribe to traditional

symbols of respect.” And

placing your right hand

over your heart or saluting

during the pledge has been

recognized as a symbol of

respect for many years.

“It shows one’s attitudes

and values toward the na-

tion which our forefathers

died for. It says a lot about

a person if he refuses to

maintain the flag protocol,”

says the Rev. Michael Shay

of San Martin de Porres

Catholic Church in Sahua-

rita.

In his homeroom class

at Sahuarita High School,

long-time math teacher

Burton Tingle requires his

students to stand, place

their hand over their heart

and recite the pledge with

him as part of the morning

announcements.

“It is not an option in my

class,” he says. “Good men

and women died to make

this country free.” Taking

off a hat and placing hand

over heart “honors those

people who have served in

the U.S. armed forces and is

important to me. This is the

best nation in the world to

live in. I want (my students)

to believe in the country

they live in.”

Tingle notes that he doesn’t

necessarily believe in every

established rule, but he will

abide by them and enforce

them at school until a rule is

The Town Council on

Monday approved a Phase

II Sahuarita Road design

plan that would allow for

sheet flooding across the

road in the event of a 100-

year flood.

The vote came after

staff said that raising the

road over the Santa Cruz

River would add $5 mil-

lion in costs and would

present other problems

if there were a major

flood and no improve-

ments to the river banks

upstream.

The vote was 5 to 1, with

council member Kara

Egbert voting no, saying

the road should be built

higher. Vice Mayor Phil-

lip Conklin was absent.

The staff recommenda-

tion was to keep the road

at the current grade level

and to add some armor,

which includes concrete

that would protect the

road from being under-

cut by infrequent flood-

ing. Phase II runs east

from La Villita Road and

may cost about $40 mil-

lion, though that amount

is not set.
