Is there a Santa Claus? – Revisited

In 1895, at the recommendation of her father, Virginia O’Hanlon of 115 West 95th Street, New York, New York, posed the question to the editor of The Sun newspaper, “Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?” In what has been the most-reproduced editorial of all time, she received her answer: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as surely as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.”

In the editorial, Francis Pharcellus Church was able to get to the deeper and authentic meaning of the myth of Santa Claus which is founded upon the life and ministry of Saint Nicholas. Perhaps, part of the confusion in considering Santa is that people don’t seem to be thinking of the same thing. Some people get stuck in the image of a rotund, white-bearded man in a red suit. One wonders if the only way to legitimate Santa Claus is through a flesh and blood person with a government-issued identification card, or, as in the case of Miracle on 34th Street, have the US Postal Service deliver him mail.

I’m not concerned about proving Santa’s existence. I just want to clear up a misunderstanding. You know the song … “Oh, you better watch out. You better not pout. You better not cry. I’m telling you why … Santa Claus is coming to town. He’s making a list, checking it twice. Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice … Santa Claus is coming to town. He sees you when you’re sleeping. He knows when you’re awake. He knows if you’ve been bad or good. So, be good for goodness’ sake!”

I also want to clear up a misunderstanding about God. God is not some sort of cosmic enforcement officer, distributing lumps of coal or toys depending on our behavior. Ugggh!

For Christians, preparation for Christmas might include correcting the misconceptions we hold about God, beginning with God as “Enforcer” or “Terminator.” You see, the birth of the Christ Child which is the heart and soul of Christmas is a demonstration of God’s love and grace born and lived out in human form. To paraphrase, “Yes, Virginia, there is a God, and God is apparent in the person of Jesus (and in every act of love, generosity, and devotion.”

Financial Report

Report on Taking the Next Step

The response to taking the next step in generous giving has been remarkable. Results through December 13th include 102 commitment cards returned totaling $283,263! Of that:

9 households made new commitments of $ 6,880 54 households increased commitments by $ 33,935 4 households reduced commitments by -$ 2,140 Net increase in commitments for 2017 is $ 38,675

The main goal was to help us all grow in our discipleship and generosity. That a large percentage of our congregation seriously considered this and returned commitment cards demonstrates that we are. The significant net increase in giving indicates that people with the means to do so are giving a larger percentage. From a church ministry perspective, this growth in our stewardship provides our leaders the assurance that the mission and ministry will continue to move ahead even as we work to pay off the remaining debt of our recently completed building and renovation project. Along with commitment cards, $6,425 in thank offerings for 2016 were received. The Financial Status Report, formerly on page two of the Tower Times, is available in printed form or can be mailed electronically, simply make a request to the church office. This is an attempt to provide a more complete, understandable, and less confusing picture of church finances. Regarding the 2016 Church Operating Budget:

Expenses paid through 12/13/16 - $412,000 Anticipate expenses 12/14 – 12/31/16 - $ 16,000 Estimated 2016 Expenses $428,000 Income received through 12/13/16 - - $360,000 Amount needed to balance budget - $ 68,000

Thank you, so much. And may the ways God has richly blessed us translate into our being a blessing to others! – Pastor Scott Moon and Bob Cooper, Finance Steward

FUMC,

Your prayers really helped. Prayers still needed.

Thanks

Joe Rankin’s family thanks all at UMC who had a part in his services. Special thanks to the kitchen staff and all who donated food for the dinner.

Dear FUMC Prayer Shawl Ministry,

I want to thank you all so very much for the beautiful prayer shawl, my friend Barb Wellington gave to me. She told me all about all of you and I feel so humbled to have this wonderful prayer shawl. Many things have happened in my life to test my love and faith in God, some very tragic. But thru it all, I’ve always kept my love and faith in God, even when I was angry at him a time or two. My parents used to drop me off at church when I was a small child, every Sunday faithfully. It was there I found Jesus. Turns out to be the greatest gift my parents could of gave me. Lately due to health reason, I’ve become tired and weary, but still my fingers refuse to let go of God’s hands. Thank you all so much for renewing my faith, strength and love. I will treasure this shawl always.

God Bless you all. Sincerely, ~ Karen Giesken

Dear Maryville UMC,

Thank you for the awesome hospitality you provided to the Bishop and our office on November 11th for the Bishop’s visiting session. We truly appreciate all you do.

Blessings ~ NW District Office

Prayer Teams

You are invited to be a part of the Prayer Team Ministry at FUMC whether you are making a permanent commitment or just want to "come and see", groups meet several times during the week in the Prayer Chapel (just across from the church office). Each group that meets in the Prayer Chapel, share or read the joys and concerns, offer silent prayer and then depart (at least as a group) after 30 minutes.

If your schedule will not allow you to attend your regular group, you may choose to participate at the time from wherever you are, you can choose to attend at another Prayer Group time, or you may come to the Chapel on your own at another time, whenever the church is open. It is designed to be a very relaxed atmosphere, and we hope you will give it a try.

How do you join a prayer team? Just show up at one of the given times below, contact David or Carol Baird or the church office for more information.
