Statewide Safety Solutions
15
Infrastructure Solutions
Roadway Departure
» Reduce the likelihood of leaving the travel lane(s) Identify routes and segments, provide training; post
appropriate speed limits
Expand use of centerline, edge line, and shoulder rumble strips and stripes, pavement markings, markers, and other devices
Improve shoulders, roadway geometry, and enhance pavement friction
Implement roadway conversions/road diets, medians, and other complete streets principals
» Minimize the adverse consequences Incorporate the use of roadside safety devices
Promote improving ditch and back slope designs
Remove, relocate, shield, or delineate trees, utilities, and other fixed objects
»
16
Infrastructure Solutions
Intersections
» Reduce intersections and interchange crashes
Deploy enhanced traffic signal control technologies; adjust signal timing; apply access management practices, provide training
Assess for alternative geometric design; consider traditional innovative designs; provide for pedestrians and bicyclists
» Improve compliance with traffic control devices
Improve knowledge and comprehension; enhance signs, signals, markings, and markers, rumble strips/stripes, lighting, and ITS enhancements; promote corridor reviews; reduce red-light running
17
Infrastructure Solutions
Pedestrian
» Identify locations
Improve data collection and use; identify pedestrian infrastructure needs; target improvements; install paved shoulders, sidewalks, shared use paths, or trails; reduce pedestrian roadway crossing exposure
Provide enhancements (high visibility markings, countdown signals, etc.); develop pedestrian action plans
» Educate on driver and pedestrian awareness
Disseminate materials on compliance with traffic control and proper right-of-way; conduct pedestrian safety outreach and education; educate and implement safer walking to schools
» Increase compliance with existing laws
Conduct targeted enforcement
Create or adapt materials for police/public education
18
Infrastructure Solutions
Bicycles
» Integrate bicycle safety into the planning, design,
operations, and maintenance
Identify locations with high bicycle activity or collision density; provide training and guidance; reduce bicycle exposure to vehicular traffic and vehicle speeds
» Educate bicyclists and motorists on improving safety
Prepare outreach to advise and educate bicyclists to use head lamps, flashing beacons, reflective material, etc.; promote “Sharing the Roads in Virginia” pocket guides; provide knowledge and practice on cycle safety to children
» Enforce bicycle traffic laws
Enforce dangerous behavior of both motorists and bicyclists
Create videos on bicycle laws for police training/public education
19
