FROM THE PASTOR
REVOLUTION YOUTH
We often talk about ?honeymoon? periods at the beginning of major life events: marriages, of course; but also new jobs, polit ical terms in office? and t imes as pastors of churches. I have found that as an interim pastor honeymoons have been so short as often to be non-existent. Usually, in the first week (or month at least), several people will ask, ?When is the real pastor going to show up?!?? It?s kind of an occupational hazard. I assure folks that after thirty-six years in ministry, I am a real pastor. Then I out line the process we Presbies follow to achieve the mutually-agreed upon goal? calling the next installed pastor for FPC. It?s not a swift process, but I have found it to be a beneficial one.
While it is more important for you all (through the Mission Study Team) to conduct a thorough and honest assessment of yourselves as a church, I will contribute my thoughts along the way. At the beginning of the summer of 2017, here comes my first word of encouragement. I have stated (and preached) that significant changes have occurred around FPC over the last decade. Change of any sort challenges us; and change in the church can rock us to the core of our being. When challenged, we often let the inst inctual port ion of our brain take over. We call it the fight or flight response. We have higher levels of thinking abilit ies, but sometimes we resort to those base inst incts. We all do! Sometimes we save lives in doing so. However, our primal inst incts
do not always best represent the image of God in us. Rather, our abilit ies truly to care for one another and rat ionally to imagine how best to do so gives evidence of the inner Divine.
So here?s the point: change challenges. When change happens, the fight or flight response tempts us to act impulsively based on what best serves our primal needs. The result is that we either turn on others? or away from them. Our higher, more God-like qualit ies call us to care for and reason with one another when we face challenges. FPC has sojourned through a decade of challenging (and necessary) change. Now we are traveling through a transit ion in leadership. My shout of encouragement reminds, We are all in this together!! Get to know each other. Affirm one another. Accept others as and where they are. Attend one of the other services at least once even if it is not your part icular cup of tea. Support each other in this communal trek through the unknown. The pract ice of reasonable caring for one another results in a church full of happy, unique, Christ-like disciples of Jesus who cannot help but attract the attent ion of others longing for a place to call their spiritual home? the church we all want to be.
Blessings,
Pastor Z
