Speaking yesterday, shortly after the visiting SA Navy ships, SAS Umkomaas and SAS Umzimkulu, had departed for Simonstown, Rousseau- Schmidt said that once again the festival has achieved what it set out to do - to boost to the local mid-winter economy and raise funds for those in the community who need it most. The over 100 events on offer at the festival were well attended with many of them showing growth on past years. Major sporting events, such as the Momentum Weekend Argus Knysna Cycle Tour, presented by Rotary showed growth, with 800 more cyclists than last year, a significant growth of 16%, said Rousseau-Schmidt. The new Forest Family Dam Ride was well supported and The Salomon Featherbed Trail Run presented by GU had 1,000 runners competing. The Knysna Dragons Lagoon Mile and the Harbour 2 Heads Challenge both had an excellent turnout. The Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon saw 8,500 runners lining up at the start of the 21 km and 42 km races. The Athletics SWD races which were supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Western Cape, were well supported with 526 athletes competing in the cross country event, 65 teams of four competing in the relay races, 273 athletes running the street mile and 241 doing the fun run. In spite of the fact that it was cold on wet on Sunday, 2200 walkers came out in support of the Pick n Pay Womens Walk to do their bit for creating awareness and raising funds for breast cancer. Eleven local libraries and two community halls participated in the Knysna Plett Herald Young Oysters programme which catered for 1,240 children per day from Monday to Friday. An evening out for a young man on holiday in Knysna turned into an horrific tragedy in the early hours of Sunday morning, when he lost his life in an incident which can only be described as macabre. Police have since arrested a 23 year old male suspect and charged him with murder. According to SAPS Spokesperson Captain Bernadine Steyn, at ten past one in the morning the victim 22 year old Jarred Lamos from Cape Town was walking down Long Street in central Knysna with a friend when the suspect pulled up alongside them in his white and grey Colt bakkie. The three of them exchanged words and when Lamos approached the vehicle, the suspect allegedly grabbed him by his shirt collar and started driving, dragging the struggling man along. Seconds later he released Lamos, but as the young man hit the ground his body went under the bakkie wheel and he sustained fatal injuries. ISSUE 467 15 July 2015Page 2 THE EDGE

At first I wasn't sure if I enjoyed watching my kids make the same mistakes that I did as they clawed their way into something which resembled 'adult status', or if it terrified me. Equally I didn't know if I should try and prevent them making these mistakes, or let them learn a life's lesson, whilst I laughed behind closed doors.

But then the realisation came:-. They are not going to listen to me anyway, are they? Well, perhaps just as much as I listened to my old man when he tried to warn me….

For example: My twenty two year old son, AKA The REE (Resident Expert on Everything) made a bold announcement earlier this year. “Dad! I have SUCH great news! I am selling my totally reliable, perfectly serviceable, fully l i censed , f a i r ly modern , r easonab ly s i zed eng ine motorbike AND everything else I own, and using that money to buy a non-running, no-idea-of-the-history, previous-owner-not-qui te- f in ished-rebui ld ing , nineteen seventy-something, no-spares-available, no-papers-that-we-know-of, larger bike, which I can then convert (though I have no idea how to) into a café racer! Cool eh?”

Ok, perhaps those weren't EXACTLY the words he used – but you get the general drift, don't you?

Of course I had to think carefully about my reply. I have always been told by Mrs Ed that I am too quick to quash my children's exuberance, and that I have a terrible habit of putting a damper on any exciting ideas they have by being far too practical and nitpicky (her word, not mine). So this time I took a deep breath, put my hand and his shoulder and looked him in the eye with all the fatherly love I could muster.“Son,” I said, meaningfully, “Are you a complete idiot or what?”

I could feel the Mrs Ed glare (known to fell a sizeable Eland at 400 paces) piercing the back of my skull and cauterising the connections in my cerebral cortex.

And, hearing the heavy sound of her gumboot on the carpet as she advanced towards me, I instinctively cringed, letting out a little whimper in anticipation of the extreme pain I was about to experience.

But all she did was lean forward and whisper three little words into my quaking ear.“Remember…. The…. Morris”

She was right, you know. (That's twice this year!) As my thoughts travelled back to the time I was a mullet-haired 23 year old, I could clearly hear my father's voice offering those timeless words…. “Are you off yer bleedin' rocker, or what?”

At the time I couldn't understand why. Any fool with half the mechanical knowledge I thought I had could surely see the potential in the vehicle I had just bought (with the money he had loaned me). What better car could anyone wish for than a 37 year old rusted Morris Minor body with a converted Datsun 1200 engine almost fully installed - apart from the

boneshaking tremor and high-pitched whine (“Drive-shaft just needs a little tweak, is all” the man selling it told me, “I would do it myself but I just don't have the time”) . All I had to do was save up to have windows put in, get the brakes bled, find a back seat and pay the back-licensing for eight years…. Then a quick respray and headskim (the car, not me), sort out the clutch, do the wiring, and hey Presto - I would have the car of everyone's dreams.

I think I paid to have it towed away by a scrap dealer two years later. The neighbours had started complaining.

I have told The REE this story, but did he learn from my mistake? No. Not in the slightest. He also chose to ignore my noble advice the weekend he came home after receiving his first salary from his employers in the Mother City. Being suddenly wealthier than he ever had been before, he had adopted a 'Regal Announcement' voice.“I AM HOME, AND I HAVE MONEY!” he told a friend, using new-found capitals to foretell of his new-found capital, “WE SHALL FREQUENTETH A TAVERN AND, ONCE WE HAVE CONSUMED ENOUGH EXPENSIVE SPIRITS TO MAKE US BOTH WITTY, HANDSOME AND OF GREAT SINGING VOICE, WE SHALL MEETETH FINE LOOKING GIRLS, AND TAKETH THEM TO DINNER!”

Though Mrs Ed and I had only seen him for half an hour since his bus had arrived (and I still hadn't had the opportunity to hand him the account for the first batch of his motorcycle repairs), we understood his need to letteth his hair down and celebrateth his first pay cheque.

I did, however, have that little tingling in the back of my head that most fathers develop, and before I could stop myself, I had issued a familiar warning: 'don't spend it all in one place' – It was a soft, subtle, lowercase warn ing , bu t a warn ing nonetheless.

Even as I felt the words leaving my mouth, I initiated a selfslap of disbelief across my own left cheek – which coincided (quite coincidentally) with a light, forearm smash on the other side from Mrs Ed (thank goodness she didn't put her full weight behind it , otherwise I would have had to swim back from Antarctica to repair the wall). “Stop being so bossy,” she said (pot & cauldron, I thought) “He's old enough to know that. You don't have to treat him like a child anymore.”

Yes, I know:- Rich coming from a woman who, even as an adult, has been known to blow an entire Christmas bonus on out-dated Joe Dolan, ABBA and Village

People compilation albums.

But, low and behold, three days and nights later, when we finally saw The REE again (we had to deliver him to the bus stop) something had changed. He had lost the swagger, the confidence, the rooster strut, his brand new Rip Curl cap and everything else…. except R3.25 and a button. my goodness dad its so expensive going out I really don't know what happened to all my money I have no idea what I'm going to do for the rest of the month can you buy me a coke and a pie

Poor kid couldn't even afford punctuation!

I could have said “I warned you,” (actually I did, but under my breath) but his state of complete brokenness took me back once again to my early days, and I decided that respectful silence was the best option. I could of course have told him my own sad 'first-salary' story. How, if the truth be told, he had actually out-lasted me by two and a half days. But I kept that to myself.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that w i l l d e t e r m i n e t h e significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela International D a y w a s l a u n c h e d i n r e c o g n i t i o n o f N e l s o n Mandela's birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world's social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”. It is more than a celebration of Madiba's life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life's work and act to change the world for the better.

TAKE ACTION. INSPIRE CHANGE.MAKE EVERY DAY A MANDELA DAYThe message behind Mandela Day is simple – each individual has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better. If each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we would be living Nelson Mandela's legacy and helping to build a country of our dreams. The baton of leadership has been handed over to us. It is in our hands now to make a positive difference.2014 is particularly symbolic as we work to honour a great statesman and make every day a Mandela Day as we mark

South Africa's 20 years of democratic freedom.

THE MESSAGENelson Mandela followed three rules throughout his life, which he did at great personal sacrifice: 1. Free yourself.2. Free others.3. Serve every day.Mandela Day is a global call to action for citizens of the world to take up the challenge and follow in the formidable footsteps of Madiba, a man who transformed his life, served his country and freed his people. Its objective is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better and in so doing, to build a global movement for good. The question we must ask ourselves is what we are doing to make the world a better place; what are we doing to make every day a Mandela Day?Mandela Day is dynamic and ever-changing: it belongs to everyone and can take place anywhere, at any time. We urge everyone to f ind i n s p i r a t i o n f o r t h e i r contribution in the legacy of Nelson Mandela and to serve their fellow humans every day.

Service & volunteerismDaily service to one's fellow man, in whatever shape or form, is an action each one of us can commit to. As Madiba changemakers across the globe let's play our part by “living” Madiba's legacy. To serve and drive the movement towards the common good and ultimately social cohesion – people everywhere are encouraged to contribute their actions to making the world a better place by each becoming a public servant in the service to humanity.Madiba was the quintessential public servant.Let us emulate the servant leader we loved by all becoming servant leaders ourselves.Lead by example.“When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.”As the world reflects on Nelson Mandela's legacy, we give thanks for his life, his leadership, his devotion to humanity and humanitarian causes. We salute and thank

him for his sacrifices for our freedom and our future. Nelson Mandela saw himself first and foremost as a servant of South Africa's people to whom he owed a duty and whom he led by example. The genesis of our mandate as t h e N e l s o n M a n d e l a Foundation and our work stems from Mandela's passing on of the torch of public service to everyone, saying: “It's in your hands to make a difference.”Positive change for the better was the gift left to all of us by Nelson Mandela – it's a living legacy and now it's your turn.In the spirit of Madiba and his vision to spread social justice and freedom for all, this is your chance to become a part of a continuous global movement for good. Let us all emulate the servant leader we loved by all becoming servant leaders o u r s e l v e s – M a d i b a changemakers.

By becoming a Mandela Day changemaker and doing something that affects positive change every day, you can show that actions speak louder than words.“When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.” By giving a little of your time to make a change that's close to your heart or by giving a little of your time to make a difference to the life of someone else, you can start changing the world around you. There are so many ways to make a difference.

Start with what you are passionate about and where you know your actions will have a lasting impact.

Knysna Executive Mayor Georlene Wolmarans announced during her state of the town address that an amount of R6 million has been allocated for the upgrading of Sedgefield’s Waste Wa t e r Tr e a t m e n t Wo r k s (WWTW). The WWTW has been operating for a number of years and the plant has reached i t s nomina l capac i ty o f 0.75Ml/day.

“Counc i l has long been concerned with the town’s W W T W. I n 2 0 1 3 a n investigation was conducted and from the report it was evident that the works were being overloaded in terms of the hydraulic loading and did not meet the required standards. This was resulting in the non-compliance in terms of the final effluent quality due to the hydraulic overload and not

sufficient contact time for the w a s t e w a t e r t r e a t m e n t processes”, said Ms Wolmarans.

According to Cllr Louise Hart, Portfolio Chairperson for the Planning, Infrastructure and Development Committee, “The upgrade will be done in three phases. The first phase will be the upgrade of the existing WWTW to comply with the special standards for the final effluent. The works will still have to operate and comply with the Department of Water Affairs standards while the ultimate solution is under construction”.

“The second phase will be the construction of a new water reclamation plant to augment the cu r ren t wa te r supp ly to S e d g e f i e l d . T h e w a t e r reclamation plant will thereafter receive the final effluent from the existing WWTW and treat the

effluent to drinking standards.” She continued, “The final phase will entail the modular upgrade of the new WWTW to an ultimate treatment capacity of 3Ml/day”.

“The work on the first phase is set to commence in the new financial year. The upgrade will not only handle the volume but will also ensure that the municipality complies with the standards set by the Department of Water Affairs. The new technology will not only ensure that the treatment works can better deal with the volume but, more significantly, it will also improve the quality of effluent to the special standards imposed by the Department of Water Affairs. Furthermore, it will also enhance the environment and better deal with health and hygiene related i s sues” , Counc i l lo r Har t concluded.

Smutsville residents can look forward to a state of the art Multi-Purpose Centre. The R11.3 million upgrade of this facility is scheduled to be completed by July 2015 and officially opened in September 2015.

Ward Councillor and Community Services Committee Chairperson Irene Grootboom said, the existing netball and rugby pitch were in a bad condition and playing a n y m a t c h e s w a s basically impossible. The buildings within the facility also required extensive maintenance and upgrading. “A substantial portion of the work has already been completed. The first phase was completed in July 2014. This phase included the ripping and layer works of the existing rugby field. The entire pe r imete r wa l l was a l so repositioned and replaced. The building was renovated and new toilets were installed. A new parking area was constructed with two new access ramps to the sports field”. “ T h e s e c o n d p h a s e consisted of the final layers and synthet ic surfacing of the rugby and s o c c e r f i e l d ” . S h e continued, “Four new energy efficient light masts were installed around the field which will allow for night time sports matches. Councillor Grootboom e x p l a i n e d t h e j o b

The project was labour intensive and the main contractors sourced most of the labour from Smutsville for the first phase. The second phase consisted of mostly specialist w o r k w i t h s o m e l o c a l

community labour sourced from Smutsville”.

“With upgrades of this kind the Smutsville Multi-Purpose Centre will be one of the best in the Greater Knysna area and the only one with a synthetic rugby/soccer field. This facility will be of great benefit to the c o m m u n i t y, I u r g e a l l community members to take good care of it and ensure that is clean and not vandalised”.

R6 MILLION UPGRADE OF THE SEDGEFIELD WASTE

WATER TREATMENT WORKS

An appeal is being made to all residents of Sedgefield who are called upon to be witnesses at court cases, to please attend the cases so that justice may be served on those criminals responsible for crimes committed in this area.

Mike Hofhuis, in his capacity as the Head of Community Orientated Policing Sedgefield, says that catching the criminals is only half the battle, and that getting them convicted is just as important if we want them kept off the streets.

Hofhuis adds that if witnesses do not appear before the courts, generally the cases are dismissed, allowing the criminals to walk free and return to their old haunts. This frustrates the hard working teams of the South African Police Services, Security Companies and Neighbourhood Watch organisations who work together to bring these criminals to book.

“The hard work which goes into the capturing of these criminals and building solid cases against them goes unrewarded due to the witnesses not testifying,” he pointed out.

A case in point is the recent trial of a well known petty theft perpetrator Donald Tamboer.

Many will remember signing a petition against him being granted bail in May this year. Whilst we are still awaiting official confirmation, it appears that most of the cases against him were dropped due to witnesses not appearing in court.

“What could have been a few years of sentencing, is now just a few months, which means he may be back in our neighbourhood shortly,” says Hofhuis.

“Those residents involved in the community policing of Sedgefield do so voluntarily, day and night, placing their safety and that of their families at risk. Therefore, all we ask is that witnesses and victims of crime do their share as well by attending court cases when required to do so,” he appealed, “Unfortunately not all cases have the outcome we would wish for, however if we do not follow the correct process right to the end, then what is the point of wasting our precious time in fighting crime.”

APPLICATIONS FOR DONATIONS/GRANTS-IN-AID 2015/2016 FINANCIAL YEAR

Knysna Municipality each year makes grants to deserving organisations and bodies. Applications are herewith awaited from organisations and bodies who would like to be taken into consideration for such financial assistance for the Council's 2015/2016 financial year, commencing on 1 July 2015. Council will consider applications in terms of its Grant-in-Aid Policy of organisations or bodies outside the sphere of government. Organisations such as NPO's, properly constituted community, welfare or voluntary organisations which have a constitution, provable active membership and an annual general meeting held during the previous 12 months, may apply.

Any consideration and allocation is subject to the conditions contained in the approved Grant-in-Aid policy of Council. Certain organisations are being excluded from benefitting from this fund and interested organisations need to consult the policy to ascertain whether they qualify.

Copies of the policy and application forms are available on the Council's website, http//:www.knysna.gov.za or from Mr Carl Mattheus, at telephone 044 302 6445, or by email at [email protected].

Empty shelves were one of the factors that drove the decision by the owners of Spar to become a branch of Pick 'n Pay. One impact of the delivery of new stock which our community has seen is traffic congestion in Flamingo Avenue caused by the volume of trucks making deliveries.

S e d g e f i e l d R a t e p a y e r s Association decided that it was an issue of safety to local road users which needed attention from the Municipality, as the traffic authority. So they asked the Municipality to organise a meeting with the store owner to examine what could be done. The meeting took place last Thursday. The atmosphere was positive and a number of p o s s i b l e s o l u t i o n s w e r e discussed. Edwin Bartie, the

TALKING TRUCKS owner of the Pick 'n Pay store undertook to look at all suggestions, to negotiate with the Municipality and report back about the solution to be adopted as soon as possible. Because no one solution was an obvious choice, it was agreed that details would not be reported at this stage.

Although not anything to do with the Municipality, the Ratepayers took the opportunity to raise the disappearance of pensioner discounts with Mr Bartie. Again, he undertook to investigate and report back to the Ratepayers as soon as possible.

production on the local

version of a successful

international formatted TV

Series from Sony entitled

Showville, and Sedgefield is

one of its destination towns.

Everybody dreams of becoming

a star and basking in their

fifteen minutes of fame.

Knowing that every town has a

story and every town has a star,

Showville makes dreams a

reality by bringing all the glitz

and glamour of wanna-be

stardom to the small, remote

and mostly, overlooked towns -

or “dorpies” - across South

Africa.

SHOWVILLE is South Africa’s

small town talent show. A

small-town talent competition

where two iconic hosts visit a

different town each week

selecting four finalists whose

performances are put to a town

vote to decide who walks away

with R 10, 000 cash, and of

course the glory of newfound

fame.

The Series centres on the often

overlooked but unforgettable

behind-the-scenes moments of

small town talent shows where

wanna-be stars reach outside of

t h e i r c o m f o r t z o n e s –

sometimes with side-splitting

results – to put their talent to the

test in nail-biting auditions that

never fail to entertain. Says Commissioning Editor at

SABC 2, Maritha Greenland,

“We’re hoping that when

people from small towns across

the country hear Showville is

coming to their town, that

they’ll be inspired to get out

their tap shoes, dust off their

juggling balls and consider

taking their singing in the

shower to centre stage. These

are the magical people and

moments we’ll be showcasing

in this 26-episode Series. From

the auditions to the coaching,

through to Show Night, SABC

2 will be there to capture each

memorable moment.”

Sony’s International TV Series “Showville” is coming to Sedgefield

Hosting the series are two award

winning performers: TV star,

comedian and record-breaking

winner of South Africa’s

“Strictly Come Dancing”

Series, Rob van Vuuren; along

with dancer, choreographer, and

star in local dance movie “Hear

They will be spending time with

coaching them, in preparation

for the big show-off talent

evening hosted in the Town Hall

attended by locals who will be

expected to vote for their

Showville is being produced as

a co-production between two of

Cape Town’s top TV production

Okuhle Media Executive

Producer, Louise McClelland

comments, “We're looking for

unusual quirky acts - jugglers,

magicians, uni-cycling clowns,

comedians - we're not excluding

singers and dancers - everyone

is welcome to audition! We will

share the, often magical, real

stories behind the talent,

reminding ordinary South

Africans that there is always

something extraordinary around

every corner if we care to look

for it.”

Says Executive Producer Peter

this format for more than two

years now and the fact that it has

become a reality is thrilling for

all of us. Talent shows are

entrenched into our diverse

culture and so we can’t wait to

see who will come out to

It seems that Standard Bank ATMs are destined to make the local news every fortnight:- Yesterday (Tuesday 14 July) the popular Sedge Locals Facebook site reported a man being mugged at about 2.30pm, just after he had drawn a sizeable amount of cash from the ATM on the main road. Apparently a thief grabbed his bag and ran off, turning left down Sysie Street. Owner of Cafe Vienna Paul Herd saw the commotion and gave chase, and as they rounded the corner onto Swallow Drive another local joined in. “As we got down to Mossie Lane the guy cut into a garden and hid somewhere,” said Herd, “And unfortunately we couldn’t find him.” It is believed that whilst hiding, the perpetrator took the cash out of the bag, which was later found empty, and then made his escape over a garden wall. Searches by SAPS, security companies and local residents were unfortunately unsuccessful.

Recently a black sparrowhawk (Accipiter melanoleucus), crashed through a loft window of a home in Louw Wepener St. on the Island while in pursuit of a pigeon. These are large, powerful sparrowhawks and in the Island area live largely on doves and pigeons. Luckily this male bird came to no harm and was able to be released the next day by Mark Shortreed of Knysna Vets and local birdman Andy Nortje.

I was recently invited to attend a Knysna Alcohol and Drug Centre meeting held in the Smutsville youth centre room near the community hall. They hold such get-togethers on a weekly basis so that those with an addiction problem can meet a n d d i s c u s s t h e t r i a l s , tribulations and indeed victories they face in an effort to get 'clean' . The man running the meeting - Marshall Laminie - explained that they had recently started the group meetings in Sedgefield because their experiences in Knysna had shown what an important factor this sort of 'fellowship' was in the long battle against addiction."Being in a group of people who are all going through the same day to day ordeals means so much to each addict. They can exchange stories, talk about a struggle they have recently faced and even advise one another," he said, adding that many long-term friendships were developed amongst the recovering addicts. "It's all about facing each day as it comes, and knowing that there are guys you can call anytime to help you through a difficult patch, some of whom have already faced the same problem, well, that can be a life saving realisation," he said.

I asked if some of the group members would like to tell me their stories and 37 year old William Danhausen was the first to agree. - What a testimony he had.William started smoking dagga at the age of nine, and remembers that even at this early age, he started pushing away those who loved him in favour of those who he believed made him look ‘cool’. As he went through school he also started drinking alcohol, frequently stealing from teachers and his parents' shop to fund this habit."At school I took the blame for everything - sometimes even when I wasn’t guilty. I didn't mind - so all my so-called friends just shifted the blame onto me." The school staff were so vexed by his behaviour that they brought in a therapist to talk to him but this didn’t help."By then my brain was already deteriorated," he said. In standard 7 William progressed o n t o M a n d r a x a n d w a s eventually sent to De Nova rehabilitation centre in Cape Town. This was a temporary fix but as he did not attend any support groups he was soon back to his old ways... and worse! "I became frequently violent," he said, "And even attempted suicide." His drugs of choice also included smoking 'rocks' and Chrystal Meth by this stage.- And so his life went on, even after leaving school, getting married and having children, his abuse of drugs and all those who loved him continued unabated. It seemed he would continue spiralling downwards, until one day he had an epiphany."Last year October I suddenly realised something. I had three children by then and I knew that when I was under the influence of drugs, I wasn’t even human.” He said that his kids, aged 10, 12 and 15, were a big part of his ‘now or never’ decision.“For them to see that I am sober, that’s the main thing,” he said.

After being accepted into De

Nova’s rehabilitation program for the third time, William finally got clean, and thanks to the support of his friends in his KADAC group, has remained so for nine months. “My life is back on track. I am even playing rugby on the weekends. I can think clearly, see clearly and I no longer have a fear of the police, because I am clean.” He now runs his own garden and odd job service, often employing people who have just come out of rehabilitation.“I want them to be able to return to something constructive, and not fall back into their old ways,” he explained. “I have to say again how important i t is that recovering addicts take part in a group. We all have each other’s numbers and are prepared to help24/7.”

His friend Neilton Roelf, a recovering Tik addict who has been clean for nine months, two weeks and three days, was quick to agree, adding that addicts need to also get their spiritual life in order.“God plus Narcotics Anonymous equals success,” he insists. Neilton only started taking Tik when he was 29, and says that over the five years of taking the terrible drug, his life was totally turned from positive to negative. Eventually he couldn’t work for more than two days so lost his job, and he was stealing so much from his parents that they had to get a court interdict to keep him away. It was when he was facing the reality of living rough – either on the beach or in the bush, that he was introduced to the Knysna Alcohol and Drug Centre. From there he too got admitted into the n i n e w e e k D e N o v a Rehabilitation Course, and fortunately his life was changed. He said a social worker managed to find him a good job to return to, and his life has since turned around. His message to those held under the power of drugs is that you do need help, but only after making your own decision to change for the better.“There is hope. You have to admit that you are powerless to solve your problems on your own, but you have to make the decision yourself.”

KADC may be contacted on 044 382 5260 or [email protected].

Although the Kadc drug addiction support meetings are held anonymously, William Danhausen (left) and Neilton Roelf were keen to tell their stories and give hope to other addicts.

To Editor,Subject: Water Supply Issues - Myoli and Cola beach, SedgefieldWe have had a number of water supply problems in the Myoli and Cola Beach areas of Sedgefield. I am not sure if it is a capacity issue, but we have had intermit-tent issues with our supply. I have been contacted by a number of very irate residents, complaining about the same issue. We have had either VERY low water pres-sure, and in some cases no supply at all, for as long as twelve hours. This week alone (9th July 2015), we had a complete lack of supply on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. When residents have reported the issue to the Municipality, we simply get a shrug of the shoulders. Regards,Anton

This letter was forwarded to The Knysna Municipality, attached is their reply.

T o: Edge Editor Subject: Re: FW: Water Supply Issues - Myoli and Cola beach, SedgefieldThe municipality is attending to the issue to restore the water pressure in the Myoli and Cola beach area. We understand the urgency and every effort is being made to resolve the matter. For the time being we have diverted the Cola Beach water supply to the 4 mega litre

reservoir. This should resolve the water interruptions in the area. Municipal Spokesperson

D ear Ed, I thought to let you know how lucky and blessed I feel to have woken up this morning. My legs and lower back ached as I stretched awake, due to the epic fun of manning a water point with some Sedgefield Locals on Saturday morning for the Knysna Forest Marathon. The pain subsided once I'd made my way to the kettle which switched on using the electricity I can afford to pay for because my business is busy. As I stared out of my kitchen/ dining room/studio window to-wards the Outeniquas, I saw the moon setting over the Swartvlei dune behind the big Milkwood my children call 'The Crocodile Tree'.

Busy Bugz early childhood development centre hosted their 11th annual Fashion Show and 4th Debutante competition on 25 June 2015. A buzz of excitement filled the town hall as the little ones arrived in their very authentic rockstar outf i t s . Funky hairstyles, bright colours, sparkly things and rock guitars were the order of the day.The evening started with the introduction of the debutantes, a group of 12 children that made it their mission to collect funds for the upgrading of the

BUSY-BUGZ FASHION SHOW - Debutantes & Rockstarsschool's interior class rooms. The debutantes for 2015 were: Ilani du Plessis, Alexander Rhodes, Elias Elkhoury, Roxi Simpson, Isabella Snow, Claire Fredericks, Macayla Greyling, De Wet Kruger, Hanre du Plessis, Lene Strydom, Cole Granger and Michael-Jay Roets. Together this group of children raised R16 955.00. The top three debutantes who collected the most money were: Elias Elkhoury (R6400.00), Alexander Rhodes (R2150.00) and Lene Stardom (R2000.00). Prizes to the value of R9 270.00

were donated to reward the debutantes for all their hard

work. We would like to thank businesses and the individuals involved for their g e n e r o u s donations.A f t e r t h e d e b u t a n t e c r o w n i n g , p a r e n t s , f r i ends and family could sit back, enjoy thei r p icnic suppers and watch the little a s p i r i n g rockstars come alive on the stage. Seeing the little ones on the cat walk,

could not have been a more exhilarating sight. We would like to thank all the parents for the effort and hard work that went into designing and creating your kids costumes.

The floor was cold under my feet - I'd forgotten to kick on my slippers. As I spooned the instant coffee into our regular mugs - it occurred to me how expensive coffee had become since we were students, yet here I was, doing the same drill as I have done for the last 25 odd (and boy were they odd) years. What's changed? Just the prox-imity to paradise, I guess. I don't live in a traffic congested, smog filled, noise polluted town or city anymore. From my vantage point over the last few weeks I have seen Venus and Jupiter dance over the horizon because we live in a space without the curse of permanent hallogens. I guess what I'm trying to say is, yes, life does suck (aches, expen-sive things, cold floors) but here in Sedgefield it sure sucks a little less. With much love and warmest regards, BTQ

‘Age improves with wine.' unknown

The Hobson's (Belinda and Gavin) can once again be highly commended on their extremely successful Knysna Wine Festival. Spoiled for choice, slickly operated, vibrant atmosphere and something for every one – this year (as with previous years) The Knysna Wine Festival was fantastic.

With Mercedes Benz as sponsor the experience was top class. As a newcomer to the area my goal was to taste my favourite cultivar from any wine farm this side of the Overberg. Many of the tables were manned by the winemakers themselves, it was a real treat to be talked through the nuances of each vintage.

An extra special 'Thank You' must go to 'The Sedgefield Team', our very own locals manned the gates, fetched and carried, smiled and waved for the two nights that the Festival ran, a feather in the cap of our little Community.

Knysna Wine Festival 2015 - nothing to Whine about!

Of course it couldn't be done without the super efficient Sedgefield Lions and Debra Olivier who managed the Sales Shop, raising funds to support even more local charities through Lions. Lastly, Belinda would like to thank all the Sedgefield locals who came to support the event. R7 000 was raised for Fresh Start Sedgefield from the ticket sales for the event a true case of a Community working for the greater good of the whole Garden Route. The proof of a successful Wine Festival? The beer tent next door was empty!

G EASTONMUNICIPAL MANAGER

As part of her Mandela Day programme, Knysna Executive Mayor Georlene Wolmarans is urging residents to donate blood. "South Africa is facing a major blood shortage," she said. "In some cases, hospitals are postponing scheduled operations in order to reserve blood for emergency operations."

"This is a problem that we can all do something about," she continued. "Working with the Western Cape Blood Transfusion Service, we will be hosting a blood donation drive.”

Sedgefield Clinic will be hosting the first drive on Friday 17 July when a Western Province Blood Transfusion caravan will be there with the team to collect blood from donors between 9.30am and 2pm.

“As it is for Mandela Day, we are really keen on collecting 67 units... or more!” says the Sister in Charge Elsa Combrink. That means 67 people... or more, need to make their way down to the clinic at the bottom of Pelican Road, behind the Sedgefield Police Station, to donate their life-saving blood. What better way to do your bit for Mandela Day.

The second blood drive for Knysna will take place at 3 Clyde Street,

next door to the main municipal building, from 10h00 to 14h00 on Monday 20 July.

Blood donors must be between the ages of 16 - 65, weigh more than 50kg's, be medically healthy and lead a safe lifestyle. Donors are also urged to eat a substantial meal three to four hours before donating blood, and to drink lots of water and/or juice on the day of donation.

"Life is unpredictable," Wolmarans continued. "You might need a blood transfusion in the near future. But you can donate blood on Monday. We all try to make our 67 minutes of service count on Mandela Day. Donating blood will take less time but, by donating blood once, you can save three lives."

"And if Monday is the first time that you donate blood, I urge you to consider becoming a regular donor," she concluded. "I believe that every day is Mandela Day - we should all be on a constant look out for ways in which we can serve our community. Donating blood is an easy, selfless act that you can do on a regular basis. It's the easiest way I know of saving lives."

Donate blood and save lives with Knysna Municipality as part of Mandela Day

Sedgefield Clinic sets a 67 unit challenge

Who can donate?

• Are between the ages of 16 and 65.

• Weigh at least 50kg.

According to the Western Province Blood Transfusion webpage, you are eligible to donate blood if you:

You can still donate if you're over 65 and are otherwise healthy, but we'll need your physician's consent. Read more about our Senior Citizens programme.

Blood volume is measured in relation to body weight; a small

framed person has less blood volume than a bigger framed person. The donation of 475ml will therefore be a much bigger blood volume loss for a small framed person than for a bigger framed person and it would therefore not be safe for people under 50kg to donate.

Blood from a sick or medicated donor could impact negatively on the recipient. You will not be able to become a donor if you had jaundice or hepatitis after the age of 13, or if you've had cancer, heart disease, epilepsy, or a bleeding disorder. If you have

• You are medically healthy.

ques t ions about spec i f ic medications you might be taking, contact our Medical Sister.

Things that are considered risky include drugs, multiple sexual partners, and tattoos or piercings done in the past six months. For your own safety you won't be able to donate blood if you are a compet i t ive spor tsperson training for a big event, or are involved in a hazardous occupation.

Simple as that.

• Lead a safe lifestyle.

• Are committed to helping others.

Village People - Gilda Scammellby Ginny Viner

This week we take a peek behind the familiar public face of one of Sedgefield's kindest characters Gilda Scammell. Gilda was the founder of Sedge Mobile Meals, the Cornerstone Homes for Alzheimer's sufferers and the Aged, and the wonderful Anchusa Social Group which has been providing company and fun times for the elderly on a weekly basis for the past thirteen years!

1) Where were you born, and where did you grow up ?I was born in Troyville Johannesburg in 1947. My dad joined the navy when I was 9, and we moved to Cape Town. I grew up in Kalk Bay and went to school in Fish Hoek. I had three children in my first marriage. Later I married a second time to Douglas in 1981. ( phew no more children).2) If I were a cartoon character I think I would be Simba in the Lion King because he was so brave.3 ) W h a t i s t h e m o s t interesting place you have ever visited? I have not travelled much. Going to Johannesburg after 50 years was very, very scary. Sedgefield was the best place I ever visited. We came on holiday fell in love with the character of the town, bought a house two days before we returned to Cape Town. We packed up and here we still are 18 years later. And what made Sedgefield interesting for you? The walks from the lagoon to Gericke's and to Platbank when the tide was low or up the path from Lake Pleasant, and of cou r se t he peop l e , t he friendliness; Sedgefield is a very caring community.4) If you knew this was to be your last meal, what would

you order? C a l a m a r i , n o question.5) Do you have a `Bucket List' and if so what's on the top? I would like to be somewhere on a hill or mountain top, w h e r e t h e r e i s complete and utter silence. Just me and my God, this is my h e a r t ' s d e s i r e . Number two would be a cruise to the Arctic. I would so love to experience the Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis, from the deck of an ocean –going liner !6) Please complete this sentence; Not many people know that I am a shy introvert.7) What concerns you? That I do not have the time to give of myself completely to my calling. I'm also concerned about my husband's health8) How do you feel about spiders? Love them, except for those that give you nasty bites that land you in a sick-bed for weeks on end. I'm only joking about loving them, I don't really mind them as long as they are outside of my bedroom. 9) How do you relax? Relax is not in my vocabulary. The last time I looked that word up in MY dictionary that page was missing.10) What constitutes a `real treat' for you? Getting away to the mountains, to the silence. 11) What was your first ever paid employment? In 1969, a Comptometer operator (you may have to look that up if you are under 50!) My salary was a whopping R90 a month. 12) Does music play an

important role in your life, if s o w h a t a r e y o u r preferences? Quiet spiritual Gospel music and Pan Pipes.13) What do you read? Books haha. I read my bible, inspirational books. Books with a message. 15) Please complete this sentence; I think Sedgefield is… a God send. I can't understand why people would choose to live anywhere else. There was once a man who went into a phone both in Plett to make a call .There he saw a notice that read 'Calls to heaven R10'. He then stopped off at the Knysna Post office and there again there was a Notice that read 'Calls to heaven R10'. He came to Sedgefield to see if they too had a notice. Lo and behold they did but theirs read `Calls to heaven 50c'. He was curious so he popped in to the office to inquire why Plett & Knysna were charging R10 for calls to heaven and Sedgefield only 50c.The attendant replied "it is because it's a local call". Sedgefield is heaven on earth.

The Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon and Half Marathon have been won by twin brothers - Tsepang and Tshepo Ramonene.

Tsepang won the 42 km in 2 hours 25 minutes 28 seconds and Tshepo won the 21 km in 1 hour 6 minutes 6 seconds.

Speaking after the race, Tsepang said he was very happy to WIN because last year he came second. “I trained very hard to win this year.” He says his best ever marathon time was recorded in Durban on 1 March 2015 as 2 hours 16 minutes 35 seconds.

For Tshepo (24) this is a new personal best. His previous best time for 21 km is 1 hour 6 minutes 56 seconds. He said that he found the race very easy, although the downhills were a challenge. He hoped to improve his time next year.

Second man over the line in the 42 km was Eric Sigxashe in 2 hours 34 minutes 55 seconds, followed by George Ntshilizo in 2 hours 37 minutes 41 seconds.

First woman home in the full marathon was Candice-Lee Davison in 3 hours 23 minutes 5 seconds, followed by Ursula Edwine Frans in 3 hours 23 minutes 27 seconds and Helen Squirrell in 3 hours 23 minutes 36 seconds.

In the 21 km Etienne Plaatjies was second with a time of 1 hour 7 minutes 6 seconds and Michael Bailey came third in 1 hour 12 minutes 24 seconds.

First woman over the line in the half marathon was Rene Kalmer in 1 hour 19 minutes 9 seconds, followed by Andrea Steyn in 1 hour 23 minutes 44 seconds, and Charne Bosman in 1 hour 24 minutes 23 seconds.

Eight and a half thousand runners lined up in the Knysna Forest on Saturday morning in perfect conditions for the Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon, the 31st event since the first one in 1984.The cool forest morning turned into a warm day with a gentle berg wind and protective cloud cover for most of the race.

Of the 1,100 runners who registered for the full marathon, only 615 finished the race. Race Director Leon Brown said that the 42 km is “very challenging but it’s also probably one of the most beautiful marathons in the world. It takes the runners deep into sections of pristine Knysna forest.”

The forest marathon is the biggest sporting event of

the popular annual Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival. For many runners it’s a bucket list race and entries sell out fast. It is known for its scenic routes, the unique early start in the forest and the great vibe at the finish at the Festival grounds.

One of the race traditions, which is to collect warm clothing discarded by runners in the forest after the start, has recently been formalised by the naming sponsor Momentum, who Brown says has added huge value to the race. “Momentum now distributes 2,000 beautiful blankets to the first runners to arrive at the start and when they discard these, they are collected by the local Youth for Christ group and transported into Knysna where they are sorted and folded and then distributed to local impoverished communities.”

Danie van den Bergh, Head of Momentum branding said that Momentum’s involvement in the race is not just about brand awareness. “We are privileged to be able to leave a legacy and a little warmth behind in Knysna every year with the distribution of these blankets to the most needy residents of the community.”

Brown said that the charity component of the marathon has two legs. “The runners have the option of donating extra money when they enter a race, but we also have 300 charity entries which are made available when entries close. The race is so popular that these charity entries go for an extra R500 and we collect R200 000 for our charities in this way.

“We also partner with the local Lions Club and Epilepsy Knysna and the money raised goes to them as well as into development running. With the race income and sponsorship, this is about R850,000 annually.

“The local taxis got involved some years ago transporting the runners into the forest for the start, because the turnaround time for buses made delivery too slow. Knysna has a very good taxi association and they work extremely well with the Marathon Club every year. It’s a critical operation involving 100 taxis – we fill a taxi every 23 seconds to deliver all 8,500 runners in an hour and a half! The runners feel that the taxi experience is a positive one, which is part and parcel of the whole Knysna marathon experience and we receive good feedback about it.”

For the full results of both races, go to: http://www.esctiming.com/eventresults/fm2015.

TWIN BROTHERS CLEAN UP THE FOREST

After months of training under the watchful eye of their personal trainer and running mate Bronwyn Lloyd, a bevy of young Sedgefield ladies braved the gruelling 21.1km course of the Forest Marathon last weekend.

They started training about a month before the Sedgefield Tortoise Tuff which was the first 10km event for many of them.“After that I started a ‘running buddies’ whatsapp group so we could keep each other motivated and run together,” said Bronwyn. She added that it wasn’t just running that got them Forest fit, but also her strenuous Taebo classes.“Shortly after the Tortoise Tuff we joined Sedgefield Striders, and the rest is history,” she said.Bronwyn is so very proud of her girls, who all finished the race between 2 1/2 and 3hours .

Included in the team with Bronwyn were Belinda Hobson, Antoinette Gibson, Samantha Trietsch, Kerrin du Plessis, Isabel Adam, Zelda Delport, Lisa Roets and Diedre Kahn.

WELL RUN SEDGE LADIES!

MEET OUR LOCAL RUGBY STARHearty congratulations to local lass Euzenneith Avery who has been awarded her SWD colours... in rugby!

The sixteeen year old Smutsville born-and-bred girl has developed a love for this sport and plays for the George High School team as centre. She is obviously a natural at the game. Having only started playing last year, she made the SA Schools’ under sixteen team.

This year she was spotted by the South West Districts coach and will now be representing her province in the up-coming interprovincial tournaments.

Parents Eugene and Zelmary are exceptionally proud of their daughter and believe she is a role-model for other youngsters from her home town. The teenager wants to encourage others to take part in sport.

“Not just rugby - any sport. It will keep you out of all the negative things that you might get involved in,” she said.

After the 'Warm Up', the next thing that should take place is to actually move. Get your blood circulating, get your heart rate up, the focus and enjoyment of exercise is after all the way to stay healthier for longer, for a better quality of life. I say 'enjoyment of exercise' because why do it if you don't feel better for doing it?

So many of us in Sedgefield like to walk. Walking to the shops. Walking our dogs. Walking in groups. Walking as Striders. Walking from Parish to Parish on the Isle of Man. Walking to avoid the price of petrol. Walking for h e a l t h . W a l k i n g f o r rehabilitation. Walking for the scenery. Walking away from the pub (so much safer). For whatever reason you walk; take a couple of minutes to think while you move.

To do this, and this may seem counter intuitive but bear with me, you need to stop. Of course this is how you start moving, from stillness. Stop and breathe. Notice how your body is connected to the floor/ pavement /vlei/beach et al. Become aware of your surroundings, taking any sights ( if you're outdoors – lucky you), smells, tastes sounds or other sensations. Notice any

thoughts or emotions and let them be – just there, in the back of your mind. Notice the hang of your arms from your shoulders, the weight of your hands. Now start placing one foot in front of the other. Notice how the weight shifts, transfers, shifts and transfers as you swing your arms to compensate for the movement of your legs. With your head perched on the structure that is

your neck, keep your eyes level on the horizon and walk. Walk with the sole purpose of feeling what it feels like to walk.

This way of moving mindfully is applicable to any form of exercise, cycling, golfing, swimming, tennis (although don't stop in the middle of a game to practice this technique), paragliding, rowing, surfing, skateboarding, running, jogging or whatever it is you do to get the blood flowing for the duration of the time that you are moving – for enjoyment. For the endorphins, for the love of having a physical body that you can put through its paces.

So, next time, you're on the treadmill, stop – register your body and then start again with your brain engaged. Keep breathing.

The Bible states clearly that when we die, we go to sleep. When Christ returns, He will call the righteous dead and living, to meet Him in the sky. The wicked living will be destroyed by fire.Ecc 9 : 5-6; I Cor 15 : 51-52; 1 Thes 4 : 15-17

undergoing surgery and as this

operation took place yesterday,

it was too late for any news in

this issue but we trust that all

the year, everyone seems fine –

long may it continue.

OFF THE MAT

Teams of 3 players played a format of three scores to count in a different tournament played by 17 ladies on July 3rd.1st: Bridget, Joy and Cheryl. 2nd: Jean, Ronnie and Wendy. Birdies: Liz 9 Colleen 3. Darleen 13. Jean 15. Wendy 5.The July holidays took their toll o n t h e L a d i e s ' F r i d a y competition, with only 6 ladies arriving to enjoy a lovely, sunny morning's golf. A relaxed and informal Individual Stableford format was played. Sandra took the honours for the morning, playing consistent golf and amassing a good score of 38 points. Daleen followed in 2nd place with 32 points. Birdies were achieved by Colleen on the 8th and Barbara on the 4th. Hopefully a better turnout will occur when the holidays come to an end.Friday golf is not limited to Club members only, all lady golfers are welcome. Tee off at 8am for 8:30am.

Mike Newbury and James

Polson. On 35 points Willie

Erasmus edged Mike Goodwin

on a count out as well.

Although the captain failed to

mention it during his prize

giving speech, we feel that John

Lockhart-Barker's spirited fight

back on the second nine was

worthy of a special mention.

Unfortunately this did not take

place but the matter shall be

referred to the committee for

further reprisals.

May we take this opportunity,

however, to draw to the reader's

attention the fact that our

captain, Brian Gerard, recently

won a potjie competition!

Surely a world's first for a Scot

and certainly because he wins so

little on the golf course. We

e x t e n d o u r h e a r t f e l t

congratulations.

Looking forward to seeing you

guys next week!

2nd July 2015

After the previous week's cross

country competition, the golfers

were once again faced with a

different type of challenge. This

was in the form of a 3 club

stableford set up. For the

un in i t i a ted th i s fo rm of

competition allows one to take

three clubs only, of one's own

choice, onto the course. This

obviously means that many an

inventive shot has to be played as

one has to use a club which he

would normally not use in that

particular lie. So inevitably the

morning's peace was shattered

either by laughter or curses. And

little thought was given to the

inclement weather.

In spite of the enforced

hardships, our captain was happy

to announce the winner as Dave

Herbst on 38 points, followed by

James Polson on 37 and Albert

Rowe on 36. (A reminder: check

Albert's handicap).

There was a count out for 4th

place which was eventually

taken by Hannes Kruger on 35

points followed by Piet Gronum

and Martin Louw also on 35

points.

9th July 2015

In spite of the weather forecast

predicting rain, 24 souls, golf's

noblest, pitched up at the Sedge

Links course to participate in the

Singles Knockout competition.

Shame on those who chose the

comfort of their warm beds

above the friendly camaraderie

that is the do or die battle on the

undulating fairways. We will

soon reveal the political party

they support but we suppose that

can be guessed.

Sadly, obviously only 12 of the

24 advance to the next round but

the ultimate winner on the day

was Roy Stedman on 38 points. A

wonderful achievement in view

of nature's torrid treatment on the

field. He was followed by Manie

Scholtz, our local professional,

in second place on 37. In third

place was John MacGregor on

36 (I will personally check this

result) after a count out with

Stuart Marais and Andrea

Steyn have emerged victorious

in the 2015 BIG5 Sport

Challenge of the Pick n Pay

Knysna Oyster Festival.

Race Director Gary Marescia said that after five gruelling challenges in the last eight days, with just three rest days between events, the BIG5 wrapped up with two very deserving winners.

Overall, Marais beat Theo Blignaut by 4 points. Third-placed Deon Hopf, was 26 points behind Marais.

In the ladies challenge, Andrea Steyn finished the BIG5 just one point ahead of fellow contender Carla van Huyssteen. Third was Caroline Wallace, a whole 76 points behind the winner.

“The extremely narrow margin between the top two contenders in both categories shows how exciting this challenge has been,” said Marescia. “Although Marais took the lead early with the 80 km MTB, he had to fight really hard to regain his position when Theo beat him in the lagoon swim. But he managed to pull ahead and stay in first position with solid wins in the trail run, the Xterra and today in the 21 km.”

Marais was fifth overall and first

BIG5 contender home in the 21km with a time of 1 hour 13 minutes 33 seconds, beating Blignaut’s time of 1 hour 17 minutes 21 seconds. Third BIG5 participant over the line was Deon Hopf with a time of 1 hour 22 minutes 13 seconds.

In the ladies BIG5, the one point difference in the final scores is indicative of the massive struggle that took place between Steyn and Van Huyssteen. “Carla started off strong in Saturday’s MTB race and extended her lead over Andrea in the lagoon swim,” says Marescia, “but Andrea showed her running strength, winning the trail run, then the Xterra and finally the 21 km.”

Steyn clocked 1 hour 23 minutes 44 seconds in the half marathon and was 2nd lady home overall. Van Huyssteen completed the race in 1 hour 30 minutes 15 seconds. Third BIG5 contender home was Lauren Cannon in 1 hour 30 minutes 33 seconds.

Marais said that the event was fantastic this year. “There was a great camaraderie between all the BIG5 athletes who were able to get together after each event in the chill zone. I look forward to the event growing over the next couple of years. I’ll be back

Die uitnodiging van die

Knysna Munisipaliteit aan

die Eagle Stars Rugby

Sedgefield om aan die

Oesterfees Toernooi deel te

neem, was n moeilike

besluit.

Die hoofafrigter, Clive

Solomons en hulpafrigter,

Michael Peterson het

aanvanklik deelname geweier

en voer as rede aan dat hulle

SWD verpligtinge het en dat die

spelers nie onnodig blootgestel

moet word nie.

Tog is daar op n laat stadium

besluit dat dit wel moontlik kan

wees omdat die toernooi rooster

nie met dié van die liga-

westryde s'n sou bots nie. Agt

spanne het deelgeneem en elk

moes minstens drie wedstryde

speel.

Die Eagles se eerste wedstryd in

die toernooi was op Vrydagaand

waar hulle met hul B span

maklik gewen het met 13-0.

Daarna was dit die liga-

wedstryd teen Knysna op tuis

bodem. Dit is een wat Knysna

so gou as moontlik sal wil

vergeet. Eagles wen met 51 - 5.

Na die liga wedstryde was alle

oë gefokus op die toernooi wat

nog twee wedstryde ingesluit

het. Eagles het toe n plek in die

semi-finale verseker met n

prys van R2000. Dit was n

naelskraap oorwinning van 15

teenoor All Black se 12.

Daarna was dit die grote - die

finaal!

Die span was reeds verseker

van R8000. Hulp het van orals

ingestroom toe die

ondersteuners hoor dat Die

boys (Eagles) in die finaal is. Die

toeskouers het aanhoudend

gesing en die spelers

aangemoedig met “Daai

Eagles hulle is gevaarlik”, en

“Shoop pack teta teta”.

Dit was n puik besluit om Ben

Brinkhuys aan te stel as

hoofafrigter vir die finaal. Sy

kennis en ervaring was

deurslaggewend en die manne

het beslis geweet dat dit die

eerste plek is of niks en dat dit nie

Eagle Stars Rugby Sedgefield - Champs Oesterfees Toernooi

onderhandelbaar is nie : Eagles

16 - Sky Bleus 15! Die eerste prys

was R14 000.

Die bestuur bedank alle

ondersteuners en spelers wat ses

wedstryde moes speel oor een

naweek en boonop as oorwinaars

wegstap.

Die volgende liga-wedstryd is in

Plettenbergbaai Bito, 18 July

2015.

because I love the vibe around it and I’m hoping to bring my family next year.”

“This year’s BIG5 has been an awesome event ,” agreed Marescia. “We had some outstanding athletes competing and we are hoping that it will grow and become a must-do event on every multi-sports athlete’s calendar.”

The multi-sport challenge is a highlight on the annual Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival programme and includes the Momentum Weekend Argus Knysna Cycle Tour presented by Rotary 80 km MTB, the Knysna Dragons Lagoon Mile, the 14 km The Salomon Featherbed Trail Run presented by GU, the

Totalsports XTERRA presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT and the Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon /Half Marathon.
