• François-Dominique Toussaint L’Ouverture (May 20, 1743 – April 7, 1803) was the leader of the Haitian Revolution.

• He was a military and political genius.

• His abilities led to the independent black state of Haiti.

• He helped change an entire society of slaves into a free, self-governing people.

• The success of the Haitian Revolution shook the institution of slavery throughout the New World.

• He began his military career as a leader of the 1791 slave rebellion in the French colony of Saint Domingue.

• At first he was on the side of the Spanish.

• Then the French got rid of slavery, so he switched to their side and fought the British and Spanish.

• The French changed their minds and set up slavery again in Haiti.

• Haiti went to war with France.

• 1801 – L’Ouverture made his colony independent from France and wrote a constitution.

• He set himself up as governor for life

• By 1803 Napoleon was tired of fighting Haiti: he & L’Ouverture agreed to terms of peace.

• Napoleon agreed to recognize Haitian independence.

• L’Ouverture agreed to retire.

• The French invited L’Ouverture to come to a negotiating meeting with full safe conduct.

• When he arrived, the French (at Napoleon's orders) betrayed the safe conduct and arrested him, putting him on a ship headed for France.

• Napoleon ordered that L’Ouverture be placed in a prison dungeon in the mountains, and murdered by means of cold, starvation, and neglect.
