Tourism & Small Business Report – 13th May 2015

Reporting Period 11/03/2015 – 13/05/2015 Due to the SJ CRC Committee not

meeting in April due to the Strategic Planning Day, April and May reports have been

combined.

Business & Community Directory ~ Project nearly complete The Directory is back from the printers and now the focus is getting it delivered to all residential homes in SJ. To date the townships of Jarrahdale, Mundijong, Serpentine and Whitby have been delivered. For those requiring an additional copy or for those that have PO Boxes additional copies are available from Mundijong, Jarrahdale and Serpentine Post Offices. We are now starting to move into Byford, starting with Byford on the Scarp; once Byford is complete Directories will then be available from the Byford Post Office. Directories will also be available at the SJ Shire Community Roadshows. I am happy to say to date feedback has been very positive; I have already received an email from a happy advertiser to say he has received work generated from his ad in the Directory. In the coming weeks I will organise an official Directory launch with the advertisers.

Website Content and Updates ~ 41% complete

Now that the Directory is complete the focus shift back to website content building. Seed funding from Byford & Districts Bendigo Bank will allow for the online community directory project to kick start, additional funding will be required to complete the project. As the MCA delegate for Economic, Planning and Tourism a funding request has been submitted to Alan Hart to be considered in the 2015/2016 SJ Shire budget

Serpentine Valley Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/serpentinevalley is

increasing in “Likes”; currently 771 people are following the page (up by 141).

Marketing Activities

Community Roadshows – Attended the Jarrahdale roadshow 11/05/2015 a great

opportunity to showcase CRC activities to the local residents with particular

emphasis on the Serpentine Valley website as the “go to website” for local events

and information. The Serpentine and Mundijong roadshows are going to be difficult to

attend as they clash with other activities; however I am working with Louisa Loader

from the Shire to have marketing material available.

A Taste of Perth - in partnership with Millbrook Winery I will represent SJ on the

weekend of 16th & 17th May. I attended this event last year and it proved to be very

beneficial, hence attending the extra day this year.

Community & Business Networking Seminars

Upcoming seminars:

Never Miss That Sale – Tuesday 23rd June 5.30 – 7.30pm. Unfortunately the Business Law Seminar 12/05/2015 had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers, I can only assume that local businesses are travelling really well and do not need business law advice?

Grant Submissions

11/02/2015 Peel Development Commission - Community Chest

A grant application for $20,000 has been submitted for funding to assist the Business

& Tourism project.

Awaiting Outcome – results due soon.

FRRR Grant now complete, will need to acquit.

SJ Business & Tourism Committee

Will need to organise a formal meeting soon. An agenda item will be the need to look

at the viability of paid membership.

Mundijong Community Association

Attended meetings 19/03/2014 and 16/04/2015 - As the MCA Economic, Planning

and Tourism delegate I have submitted a request for Shire funding for $10,000 to

assist with the development of the online Community Directory and in part the online

Business Directory on the Serpentine Valley website. The online Community

Directory project is outside of the scope of the Tourism & Small Business funding

agreement currently in place with the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

Awaiting Outcome

Next meeting 21/05/2015

OCM124.4/07/15

Jarrahdale Community Association

Attended meetings 1/04/2015 and 6/05/2015.

MAPTO

MAPTO and Peel Visitor Centre Managers - attended meetings 11/03/2015 and15/04/2015. Next meeting 20/05/2015.

Conclusion

Concerns regarding remaining budget which is sitting at just over $13,000, at current work pace and with normal outgoings funds will expire in approximately 3 months. If we are successful with another funding round with the Shire we need to take into account that the funds for 2014/2015 did not reach our account until December 2014. If it is the same payment process for 2015/2016 funding round this will result in the project working in significant deficit which is very stressful. Does the CRC board need me to sustainably reduce my hours this will be to the detriment of the project.

Testimonial - How Business Networking and Training is a Helping Local Business... Our business had a web page built approximately 10 years ago but it was difficult to get into to make

changes, so we never did. 2013 I signed up for Facebook but didn't know how to use it.

Early 2014 Siobhan from BrandOwl Graphic and Web Design built us a new web page. However I still

did not truly appreciate what a valuable web page it was until I started attending talks and training

courses at the SJ CRC in Mundijong. It started with a talk by John Stanley talking about making our

towns more attractive to tourists. He said that we should be posting on Facebook twice a week, I had

never even done one post! I then attended two excellent Facebook courses, one for beginners and

the second a bit later for people like I had become, who were up and running with Facebook. These

courses gave me the incentive to have a very enquiring look at our new web page only to be amazed

at what fun it is to blog. I now blog from our web page, post on Facebook and Pinterest regularly.

I have two stand out messages that I gained from these courses.

1. It is very easy to spend too much time social media marketing, because it can be fun.

2. Posting on any form of social media makes your post a legal document, if you do not want to

end up being sued, then post wisely.

Out & About... Taste of Perth Another great opportunity to promote the Serpentine Valley was recently at the Taste of Perth 15-17 May. Teaming up with Millbrook Winery I will had the pleasure of working on their stand whilst promoting the region. With Serpentine Jarrahdale only 45 minutes from Perth it makes us an ideal day tripper destination and I was certainly be encouraging people to stay a little longer!
