Farewell & Best Wishes for a Happy Retirement to Mr. Stephenson!Principal’s Message

This month we are celebrating the character trait of Optimism. This is the perfect time of our school year to be thinking about continuing to work on the goals that students have set from the suggested next steps

contained within their Report Card, with enthusiastic optimism. I appreciate the optimistic effort and attitude of our School Council and our many wonderful Parent Volunteers and the way they all work so passionately to enhance the learning environment at Tottenham Public School. Thank you parents for your partnership in nurturing students of character at our school and for being positive role models for your children. International Day of Pink is being celebrated on WEDNESDAY APRIL 13TH in schools throughout Simcoe County District School Board. We encourage everyone to wear pink that day as together we reinforce the importance of inclusivity and diversity! You can also watch our PINK flag that will be flying that day as together we CELEBRATE DIVERSITY!

Our students are beginning to wear summer clothes to school. Please help your children to follow the school dress code. A copy of the dress code is in the Student Agenda Planner and is posted on the SCDSB web site. Clothing should not be offensive or put down anyone or any group of students. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in ensuring that Tottenham Public School is a respectful and positive learning environment for everyone.

Please join us on FRIDAY APRIL 29th, at our April Character Assembly, as we celebrate Mr. Stephenson and his teaching career, and all that he has contributed over the years to the learning and lives of his students! He is leaving quite a legacy in SCDSB and we all know that he will be dearly missed!

May this season of hope, renewal, and new life fill your hearts with optimism as we welcome back the beauty Spring!

Sincerely,Mrs. Nixon

HAND WASHING TIP: If soap and water are notavailable, try hand sanitizers, gels or wet wipes instead!Parents could include theseitems in their child’s backpack or lunch bag!Together, we can reduce the spread of germs!

ATTENTION: Tottenham Public School Front Doors are Locked during the School Day.

The front door intercom and video technology continue as a part of the Safe Welcome initiative. The intention is for all elementary schools in Ontario to have front entrance doors locked during the school day.

As we continue to utilize this technology our doors will be locked during class time only. To access the building during this time, you will need to ring the buzzer.

Staff in the office are responsible for buzzing visitors in. We would like to thank parents and visitors for their continued patience as we strive to keep our students safe!!!

As always, if you have any questions, please call or visit the office.

PARKING @ TPS :

According to our OPP Community Liaison Officers, parents are legally able to park in the Mall Parking Lot on Rogers Road. Now that the nicer weather is arriving, we are encouraging students to walk or ride their bicycles to school to prevent the need for cars.

The safety of our studentsis always our top priority.

Student SafetyWe’d like to remind all parents to please reinforce strategies that students should use if approached by

someone they do not know, wherever that might be. Please take the time to remind your children to be aware of their surroundings.

Here are some safety guidelines that could be of assistance when speaking with children, provided by the OPP’s Crime Prevention unit:

If children walk to school or to the bus stop, try to arrange a walking buddy or group. They should use main routes that are well-travelled, rather than taking shortcuts through deserted areas.

Develop a "what if" game for children to get them thinking about how they would respond if they felt threatened or afraid.

Parents/guardians should know who their children play with and where they go. This includes keeping a list of their friend's addresses and phone numbers.

Children should not be left in unsupervised locations, such as cars, parks, public washrooms, arenas, malls and plazas, etc.

Teach children where and how to get help. Encourage parents and guardians to go with them on their regularly travelled routes and to show their child how to use 9-1-1 (no coins required).

Children should talk to a trusted adult immediately when someone does or says anything that makes them feel strange or uncomfortable.

EQAO

Our Grade 3 and 6 students are preparing for the upcoming EQAO assessment to be administered for the Ministry of Education between May 24th and June 2nd. Teachers and students are working very hard to prepare for this Ministry assessment. As parents, you can support your child please by ensuring that your child is well rested and nourished and arrives at school on time each day. Please avoid scheduling appointments during the weeks of EQAO testing and encourage your child to do their very best.

Please see www.eqao.com for further information, or call your child’s teacher if you haveany questions or concerns. Thank you!Pack a Rainbow in your Child’s Lunch!

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit would like to remind parents about the importance of a school lunch full of colourful veggies and fruit. Try some of these tasty kid-friendly ideas to ensure they will eat what you pack:

Add grated carrot to egg or tuna salad

Pack veggies or fruit in small bite size pieces for easy eating

Prepare veggies and fruit with different tools that change the shape and add interest to your child’s lunch. Use melon ballers, vegetable crinkle cutters, cookie cutters or even an egg slicer to make some great shapes

Use a shake of cinnamon on cut fruit if it tends to turn brown - they will enjoy the new flavour to their favourite apple or banana pieces

If your kid is a dipper, add a small container of yogurt or pudding for fruit dipping or cottage cheese or hummus for veggie dipping

For more information you can call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-5720 and speak with a public health nurse or visit the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.

Message from theSimcoe Muskoka District Health Unit:

Free Dental Services

Taking care of your child’s teeth is an important way to keep them healthy. All it takes is a pea-sized amount of fluoridated tooth paste and helping your child brush two

minutes, twice a day. If you don't brush your child’s teeth regularly, bacteria can build up to form a clear sticky film on teeth called plaque. Brushing your child’s teeth regularly helps to remove plaque and prevent it from forming.Another important part of taking care of your child’s teeth is visiting a dentist. If you cannot afford to take your child to the dentist there is a FREE program for dental visits called Healthy Smiles Ontario. If your family qualifies, your child(ren) will receive regular dental services at no cost. Children do not need to have an urgent dental condition to qualify. To find out more or to book an appointment, call the Health Unit’s Oral Health team at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 x8818 (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.).

New Safe Schools tool to report bullying, drug use or vandalism

The SCDSB has developed a new online Safe Schools Reporting Tool. Students and parents can use this tool to submit a report online if they witness inappropriate behaviour such as bullying, drug use or vandalism. Students are still encouraged to speak to a trusted adult at school or home if they have any concerns. This form isn’t a substitute for having a discussion with a teacher or principal. Student safety and well-being are always our top priority. For more information, please contact the school or visit http://scdsb.on.ca/ReportAnIncident.
