July 29th: North Arm - Saglek Bay

This is a place where the rocks revel in their freedom.Oscar Lieber Geologist, 1860

Today we have a full-day excursion from base camp to the NorthArm of Saglek Bay. This ord will take your breath away with

precipitous cliffs where falcons soar, sand beaches, roaring waterfallsand the story of glaciation that sculpted this landscape. There arefew places on earth where such an array of geological featuresand processes can be observed in a single landscape. The limitedvegetation cover, high mountains, coastal cliffs, deeply incisedords, and sheer cliffs that cut perpendicular to the rock fabric, provide some of the best exposures of the earths geologic history.

Here Mike will offer a photo workshop on landscape and macrophotography. He will cover methods of captureing the essence of this

massive landscape and giving your images a sense of scale. Also youwill learn the ner details of documenting the macro world wheretiny little owers, mosses, plants and thousand year old lichensthrive.

We will have the opportunity to hike to an inland lake fed by astunning waterfall. Youll also be able to try your hand at catchingsome sh. A trip out on the land wouldnt be complete without a boil- up - enjoy!

    July 30th: Rose Island

Today we have a full morning to explore Rose Island, an areainhabited by the Inuit for thousands of years. Here we nd hundredsof ancient Inuit graves, of which only a few have been properlysurveyed to date. We learn about the more recent history, includingthe repatriations human remains removed for research. Rose Islandwas a popular summer meeting spot for divergent early groups, asit is very rich in marine life, so hunting would have been good. Theafternoon is left free to settle into camp, mingle with researchers,

youth, elders and other camp guests and explore our surroundings.

    July 31st / August 1: Ramah Bay

We take the longliner to Ramah Bay. Ramah was a small mission runby the Moravian Church in northern Labrador from 1871 until 1908.It is also the site of an uncommon semi-translucent light-grey stonewith dark banding called Ramah chert used for aking chippedstone tools (mostly bifaces and projectile points).

We will have a chance to explore the bay and will make camp for thenight before returning the next afternoon. Overnight in tents.

    August 2: Helicopter Excursions

Today we will have helicopter excursions, either for aerialphotography, or weather conditions permitting, to drop those who areinterested out of basecamp so they may hike back in. Throughout theday, Mike will conduct photo workshops.

    August 3: Basecamp

We will spend the day hiking in the area around basecamp, on thelookout for polar bears, caribou and marine mammals. There arenumerous hikes out of base camp ranging from rolling terrain tosteep inclines. In the evening we will have our private farewelldinner.

    August 4: Departure

After breakfast, we transfer to the airstrip via longliner to join ourcharter ight back to Goose Bay today.

Please note: This is our intended itinerary. The Torngat MountainsNational Park exists in a very harsh environment and weather isalways a factor. Our exact daily activities will be determined by ourenvironmental conditions and will be made onsite.
