THE CITY #THECITY#

Turin is located considerably closer toSwitzerland than to Rome. This factpermeates the city and is revealed in thecity centre and the solid turn of thecentury districts. Turin has its roots in theindustrialisation of the 20th century andthe struggle for democracy and progress. Here people arrive on time and parkcorrectly. You eat well - but only after along day’s work.

The Romans founded the legionnairescamp Augusta Taurinorum. QuadrilateroRomano is still the city centre, but littlesurvives from classical antiquity. Insteadthe historic monuments date from the 17thand 18th centuries, erected by the kings ofSavoy who ruled the region at that time.

The struggle for a united Italy started inPiemonte and Turin was the country’s firstcapital city, 1861-65. This became adriving force in the creation of an industrialmetropolis in Northern Italy, where for along time Fiat constituted the engine. ButTurin lives in the present day and islooking to the future for its identity.

SHOPPING #SHOPPING#

In the Quadrilatera Romani shopping isinviting thanks to the many arcades whichoffer protection against the heat, rain, wind and snow. The best shops and anumber of continental cafés are to befound under the arcades.

The shopping street with all the Italiandesigner brands is called Via Roma. Thedepartment stores on the parallel street,Via Lagrange, also offer Italian luxury, though the range is more varied.

Via Garibaldi, the pedestrianised street, has a large range of youth oriented fashionclothes. This is also where you’ll find theJuventus football club shop with pictures ofZlatan. In the side streets there arecongenial small shops with unusual bitsand pieces. Antiquities are on Via MariaVittoria, the street for books is called ViaPo.

The Porta Palazzo market calls itself "thebiggest in the world" and starts at Piazzadella Repubblica. You can easily spend anhour at the food stalls or looking forbargains from the 1920s or the 1930s atthe bric-a-brac market. On Saturdaysthere is a large flea market called Il Balon.

Regional wines are sold direct by theproducers on the medieval square Piazza
