August is the last month of summer, so come join the fun with all your
Porsche friends. This month is packed with events for you to choose from...starting with our breakfast meeting, a technical session, three autocross events, The Historics at Laguna Seca, Kenny’s Krispy Kreme gathering, the Hearts & Garages tour and a fun rally. We have something for everyone. This year’s concours event was
full of splendor and variety. It was something different from what had been done in the past. Innovation is what keeps Porsche ahead of the pack. A small tweak here, a slight change there, makes all the difference. As we continue forward through the rest of the year, your board of directors will continue to find innovative ways to make this an even greater club for everyone to enjoy.
The fun is just getting started and the rest of the year promises to be even better than the first half. So, comeout and have some fun, because before you know it, the year will be over.

In statistics, any group of data has at least one large exclusion for which
there is no explanation. These are called various things, often an “anomaly.” but I find that word has too many negative connotations. I like “sport;” quite often used for the same definition a data point that skews way, way off the normal stream and which almost defies description. And that dear reader defines the 2008 Orange Coast Region (OCR) White Glove Concours...way off the charts and a sport if ever there was one.
What Wine Goes Best with that Carnauba Wax Anyway? It all started with our Friday night soiree in a private tent where we had wine, food, and music. I knew we were in for quite a weekend when we pulled up to the Huntington Beach Hilton Resort that was the site of this year’s event.
An attendant pointed us to a reserved parking area for only the Porsche Club! Now, that’s pretty classy. It was very nice to find out that many couples had decided to make a weekend of it and had reserved rooms at the Hilton; very romantic. Knowing that the Saturday would start with an early hour, I stayed only as long as the wine lasted, only to be a good guest you must understand. In the end I decided it took a good strong Red to overcome the powerful aromatics of car polish. Many guests tried their skills at the driving simulator Shoreline Motoring brought...getting ready for Sunday’s Zone 8 Autocross at El Toro Fields. Others loosened up on the dance floor. Most seemed to be having a very good time.
Saturday Showtime!Once again “oh dark thirty” came a little too soon for yours truly but this
time it was comforting to know that Chez Cooper is only just up the beach highway from the Hilton. So with only the slightest twinge of “morning after the night before” I took off for the Concours. The nascent hangover was quickly pushed back by a moderately priced Starbucks iced Frocha-Mocha-Locha and before you could say, “highly waxed 2001 996 Twin Turbo” or “Bob’s
your Uncle” (you choose which one), I was at the Concours itself.
The parking volunteers got me quickly to my spot and I noticed that the cars were being parked in the various categories to correspond with their entered classes. It came as no surprise that Cabriolets were featured. (We used to call these “convertibles” before we learned that you didn’t pronounce the “S” in Concours.) This was because of two things: one is that that Cabs go great with California sunshine and the beach. The second is that the maestro for this years event, Buzzy Klevens owns a 911 Turbo Cabriolet, go figure. As emcee I had to do a lot of important stuff like making sure the microphone was connected without electrocuting myself and ensuring that I had enough SPF 2000 on my baby face. While my particular “punum” is important to me it pales besides the responsibility of lining up 150+ cars and setting all of the sponsor tents amongst other little items on Buzzy’s “to-do” list. The OCR volunteers handled all this with great facility and it is just such a shame that we can’t name every single one of them. But it is notable that by sometime around 8:30 am the entire show was unhitched and all of the wagons were circled for our annual White Gloves Concours. Buzzy had put together quite a
program and we commenced with a flag presentation by our local Boy Scout Troop with singing background by the group “Girls Night Out.” I helped with my usual malapropism by calling them: “Ladies Night Out.” They indignantly told me they were no ladies whatsoever and we got the identity right in the end. Stylizing the national anthem is always a risky enterprise but these “Ladies” really got it right in my opinion and, along with the Scouts, set the stage for the activity to follow.
Also a part of the day was an appearance of the USC Marching Band again as arranged by Field Marshal Buzzy, an alumnus of this institute. It really was a “bandlette” as we didn’t have the full compliment, but they made up for it with real brio and my personal favorite “Tusk” was on their agenda. I even saw some UCLA Alumni smile so the show was certainly appreciated.
Swimming with SharksBeing at the beach, sharks in and out of the water are all around you. Especially at a Concours. No one should kid himself or herself about the competition in Concours and the people who know how to do it right are just as tough as you find them in any other sport. There is more to cleaning a car for competition
than just a hose and a towel. My advice for anyone considering getting into this
is to find someone who has done well and get advice. For instance, expect the judges to unwind your seatbelt and check the hidden portion in the reel for dirt…and that is just the beginning. My own car was judged by a group of gimlet-eyed desperadoes who would have been right at home on any wanted poster in town., I say this because as usually happens, I went down in flames. These folks could spot grime on a wheel cover at 30 feet, and they were much closer than that to my car. Next year if there is a “30 feet” category I will enter that.
OCR Sponsors Love YouBuzzy had lined up 20 sponsors for this years event and many of them had booths at the Concours. If you ever truly want to find a Porsche deal, come to one of our Concours and buy, buy, buy. I got a Polo shirt from Newport Beach Porsche for a lot less than retail and there were many other bargains around. Located right in front of the announcers booth was the USC booth and they were selling everything from ties and shirts to underwear. All of course branded with the USC logo. The Orange Coast Region Goodie Store was also there in front of us and David Miranda with his crew did a land office business throughout the day. David has done a good job of selecting things to make us look better than we normally do and there is always something nice to get from him. I’m still waiting for him to find a fashion that will help a receding hairline. All the judging and scoring were

June 1 – Zone 8 Championship AutoX Boy, that Buzzy guy and his concours team sure know how so throw a party! After the wine tasting event Friday night, the Concours during the day on Saturday and the dinner and dancing Saturday night, Sunday’s 5:30 am alarm seemed awfully loud. However, being
the AutoX Chairman-Emeritus does NOT mean you are retired. So here I stand in front of 100+ drivers at the 8:20 am drivers meeting, “OK! All those that participated in OCR’s Topless at the Beach Concours step forward.” WOW! To my surprise, about seven people stepped forward and, as promised, I gave each of them a Large box of Q-Tips. The first car was on course at 9:00 sharp. As a result of the AutoX Team’s monthly planning meeting this even

June was a busy month for the OCR AutoX Team. They held the
Walters Porsche AutoX Series Zone 8 Championship event on June 1and another Series Championship event on June 22. In addition, by the time you read this, we will have held another Series Championship event on July 13. That makes five events within 90 days and every event with over 100 entries. Looking back to the first half of 2006, when OCR’s Championship Series was first started, I remember having only 25 to 30 Porsches entered and thinking how will we get this series off the ground? We
asked the SCCA crowd to join us so we would have enough experienced people to run the events and enough entries just to pay the bills. Initially Newport Auto Center and Stuttgart Performance, as
well as a couple event sponsors stepped up to help. For 2008 thanks to Walter Automotive Group (our Series
Sponsor), Stuttgart Performance, and GMG-Global Motorsport Group (our Support Sponsors) and all the individual event sponsors listed on the enclosed schedule, we have not only been able to purchase the needed equipment to run the events efficiently but have improved the quality of the events. THANK YOU ALL!

Ever since I joined our club in 2001, I have wanted to lead a tour to Las
Vegas. Well this was the year to go and the timing was perfect. We had perfect weather, roads and friends as always. Solomon Baum, the VP of the Las Vegas Region scheduled their “Fire to Water Run,” to coincide with our visit to Las Vegas. Walter’s Porsche in Riverside became one of our club’s newest dealer sponsors just in time to host a breakfast gathering at the start of our trip. I had never been to Walter’s Porsche before and visited their dealership prior to our Vegas trip. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Their facility is getting a face lift as are most Porsche dealerships.
Most of us departed on Friday morning and met at the dealership. Walter’s provided us with plenty of coffee, donuts and goodies to take with us. We even sampled a Smart car from one of their dealerships. Talk about a neat little

automobile. As the tour director I decided to omit the scenic route to Vegas, opting for the fastest and shortest route. I know that J’nan and I could not wait to simply get to Las Vegas and relax. We did just that.
Our group met for drinks at the Ventana bar at the Bellagio. If you have never sat outside on the balcony while the fountains dance, you have missed the best part of visiting Las Vegas. After our drinks we had dinner at the Bellagio’s buffet, which is a feast. Bed time was early because of the early morning drivers’ meeting on Saturday. Our group gathered at Gaudin
Porsche along with about 20 cars from the Las Vegas Region. Tony Zito, President of the LV Region along with Salomon Braun, their VP, welcomed the group. After the usual driver’s meeting we all headed out to the Valley of Fire State Park, located approximately 40 miles north east of Las Vegas. Spectacular scenery and curvy roads were the order of the day. We stopped at several spots to take pictures and compare opinions on the different red rocks. Our drive ended at Lake Las Vegas where we had a great lunch overlooking the water.
Saturday afternoon was free time for everyone to recharge before meeting for dinner at the Hofbrauhaus Restaurant. Talk about Oktoberfest every night. What a place! There was even a Jagermeister Shot Girl, dressed in leather attire complete with cap and wooden paddle.A stein-holding competition ensued and I was not about to miss it. I had missed
my opportunity to participate many times during the last several Oktoberfest festivities. I knew that I could beat the 15 or so younger competitors. It was simple enough. Hold a glass stein filled with beer with one hand extended in front of your body the longest. After five minutes I was the winner! Then Saturday night, our group enjoyed different shows at different locations. Frank and Nancy Goodyear joined J’nan and I for a show at the Luxor. Sunday was a day to relax and drive

home after a fun filled weekend. On my way home I received a call from Jim Spitzer who had a problem when the valet parked his Boxster at Primm. As the valet parked his car, a gush of water flooded the lot from under his car. What to do on a Sunday. I told Jim to wait until Monday when he would have more options. AAA quoted him $400 for a tow back into town. I gave Jim the telephone number of Salomon who might have more ideas. Jim called me a few days later to say that Salomon and Tony Zito were
great as well as the staff at Gaudin Porsche. It appears that there is some type of warranty coverage which paid for all of Jim’s expenses. Porsche paid for his lodging, food, tow and repair of the water pump. Jim was so excited he actually filmed a short thank you on YouTube. I’m glad that Jim made it home safely and that everyone had a great time. Come out and join us on our next tour.

I am a 10-year-+ member of OCR who has participated in virtually all the
types of events and activities offered by our club. However, I have avoided serious Concours participation for a series of reasons. Notwithstanding that, I felt compelled to respond to Joe Nezda’s call for volunteers to help with judging this year. So, I drove up the coast to Circle Porsche on May 24 to attend the Zone 8 judging class led by Joe. After sitting through the well organized and stimulating class, watching the seasoned judges conduct a simulated judging session of Joe’s immaculate 356 Coupe, asking some questions, and reading through the newly revised Zone 8 Concours judging manual, I was declared ready to act as a judge at the 2008 OCR White Glove Concours.

A couple evenings before the June 31 event, I re-read the judging manual and then went out into the garage and laid down, with a flashlight, and peered under the front of my 993 and “felt around” to see where my hand could reach and fit. [My hands came out covered with dirt and grease. [Clearly my 993 is not a full Concours candidate!] My guess, that proved correct, was that Joe would assign a long-armed rookie to the Full Concours team as the non-engine-underside judge because it is arguably the least complicated area, and besides, rookies should start at the bottom and work their way up (My thought, not his). I was surprised and am delighted to say, I really had fun during my judging experience. There was a very nice feeling of a team effort and the camaraderie
that goes with that. Also, it was a great chance to get up close and personal with some really wonderful cars and to meet some folks I probably would not have met otherwise. Thinking back on this experience, I wish I had volunteered to become a judge years ago because I have missed numerous opportunities to participate and have even more fun than I have had. I still don’t think I will become a serious Concours contestant, but I hope to be asked to judge in the future because it is fun and very interesting. It is amazing to me that after more than 10 years of participation in OCR, I just found a new and different way to be involved, learn additional skills, and have even more fun. As someone smarter than me said, “You get out of this what you put into it!”

completed by 2 pm, and the crowd slowly dispersed to relax and get ready for the evening gala and awards presentations.
Saturday Night’s All Right with MeAfter a full day of wax and polish we had our awards ceremony in our private tent once again on the Concours grounds. Wine was available and I noticed that it was enjoyed by everyone and, in most cases helped to improve their dancing skills. It always does wonders for mine. Mrs. Cooper appreciates the smooth moves after a couple of Chablis as long as I avoid her toes. The food was great and dinner was with table cloths, pretty unusual for car type gatherings but most people behaved. I noticed that “Fast Freddy” and Grace Fredrickson had the best dance moves of all, with or without wine. It seems even the judges and
contestants got along together however that’s not to say I saw any hugging going on between the two groups. At least no one intentionally tripped anyone I saw. The division winners of our Concours were Bob and Cindy Chamblin in Full Concours, Chuck Rooks in Wash & Shine, Karen and Joe Nedza in Street and Mike Mansolino in Unrestored. Also I am proud to say that Mike Mansolino, a former Orange Coast Region President and Zone 8 Representative won Best of Show.

ran very smooth. The morning practice sessions saw some quick times in the low 70-second range. The course was designed by Atilla Szilagyi. It was long, fast and fairly technical. Atilla studied the “art of course design” under the direction of that infamous course designer David Palmquist. While the course was technical, those who “got it right” by looking ahead and setting up for the more difficult parts were rewarded with some nice times. Our Event Sponsors were Cape Auto Repair and Chips Away. James Buck, the owner of Cape Auto Repair located in Laguna Niguel, not only won his class driving his 1988 Carrera but provided lunch for everyone at event. Oh, did I mention James is also our Equipment Manager. T J is the Owner of Chips Away and has been an OCR advertiser and sponsor for many years. I have had chips in my paint repaired to look like new and the “clear bra” Chips Away installed has been on the car for three years and still looks great! Thank you both for your support. With everyone fed and watered and eight practice runs complete, we were ready for the competition to begin. Drivers get one warm-up run and then three timed runs. The best time of the three runs is what goes “in the book” and counts toward year-end series championship points. If you hit a cone, 2 seconds are added to that run. LET THE FUN BEGIN!.. Oh wait my phone is ringing. “Yes Mr. Harris, the event is running fine.” What dedication! Jim Harris, OCR’s AutoX Chairman took time out of his busy day driving Porsches on the Nuremburgring to check on our event. WOW, I’m at a loss for words. With the help of our timing team, Lori and Kris Scheussler, over 1,000 runs were timed throughout the day. As I mentioned earlier, the course was very challenging. Upon reviewing the results (Complete results are available on the OCR web site) I noticed the
top drivers in each class seemed to dominate their respective classes by about 1 to 3 seconds. This is VERY unusual, as times are usually tenths of a second apart. I can only attribute this to how technical the course was. Not hard to drive. You just needed to look ahead and anticipate the quickest way through the cones. Those with a few years experience seemed to have gotten it right by a pretty significant margin. At the end of the day everyone helped pack the truck and trophies were awarded to the winners and almost winner.
June 22 – Championship AutoX I once said, “To bad we don’t have a trophy girl!” Then on Sept. 21, 2007, at The Streets Event, on my birthday I was presented with Lei...OCR’s “official” trophy girl. She comes to all our events but usually stays in the trailer so her petit cardboard figure does not get wet or faded. Now fast forward to June 22, 2008. Autowerks is sponsoring the OCR event…and it happens to be Bruce Powers’ (the owner of Autowerks) birthday…and it seems the Autowerks Team had a little surprise for us. YES! We had a real live trophy girl! Angela is a model and is Miss June in the UmbrellaGirlsUSA.com calendar. In addition to Angela, Autowerks displayed some other pretty neat Porsche after-market accessories, a very trick Porsche, and a very cool Noble sports car. It was good to have OCR’s AutoX Co-Chairman Jim Harris and his son back from Europe. They had a great time as the trip included several father and sons who spent about a week of bonding and driving throughout Europe in Porsches. Jim’s son, James, is at that age of trying to figure out what to do next with his life. Well, Mr. Harris is no dummy. As soon as they returned from Europe, his son enrolled in college! It seems a taste of the “good life” gave James some direction. The AutoX Team had Registration,
Tech, etc. handled and so at 9:00 sharp after Jerry Griffin, OCR’s Chief Driving Instructor, assigned instructors, the first car was on course. If you’re new to AutoX or even if you have several years of AutoX competition, it is always nice to have an instructor give you some pointers on what you’re doing right and areas where you might improve. Instructors are available at OCR events at no additional charge and I would recommend you take advantage of their experience. Just check the “instructor wanted” box when you register or ask for an instructor at the drivers meeting. Driving an AutoX course is a combination of experience and learned skills. It takes time to get your car to “dance” through the course. A little instruction as in golf, tennis or any other sport goes a long way to making your day more enjoyable. Everyone had a good time. Our 914 friends at club NARP (Not A Real Porsche) provided great dogs, links and chili. By late afternoon the temperature finally dropped below 85 degrees. After the timed runs, Angela was kind enough to present the awards and pose for pictures. The ladies receiving awards wanted their pictures taken with the birthday boy, Bruce Powers.
Who is in the Hunt for a 2008 Class Championship and Top Gun Award? This was the 5th Walter’s Porsche Championship AutoX Series event. With 12 events scheduled for 2008, the competition is still wide open for the 2008 championship awards and the coveted OCR Region Class Champion jackets. A driver’s best 8 events will be counted toward the championship awards. A driver must compete in a minimum of 6 events to be eligible for year-end awards. In several of the larger classes, the points are very close. Below are a few examples. A driver receives 20 points for 1st place, 15 point for 2nd, 12 points for 3rd, 10 points for 4th down to 2 points for 8th place and 1 point for

The Start/Finish will be at the Steelhead Brewery (adjacent to UCI) in Irvine. At the Finish there will be some silly awards and probably some legitimate criticism of the rallye meister’s ineptness.

Chapter 1 - Background This is the first in a series of installments on performance driving, and performance driving means, of course, Porsche driving. These articles focus on the mental aspects of driving, rather than on driving technique itself, although there will be information, techniques, and references to good performance driving practices. The material will be useful whether or not you drive at track events and no matter what kind of car you are driving. You will find many easy-to-use hints and tips here, and, most importantly, you will gain the means to improve your driving at any level and for the rest of your life! This chapter introduces the concepts of the driver’s mind as part of the car, and how it performs. Later, we will deal with specific topics as they relate to improving this part of the performance equation. Subjects will include preparation, attitude, practicing, seeing, and learning, among others. There are a number of good books on the basics of performance driving, and some of these do go into the realm of the brain as part of the driving equation. There are also many excellent driving schools you can attend around the nation that will help you with your driving on or off the track. The Porsche Club of America San Diego Region (PCASDR) Driving School is an excellent value, plus it is close, convenient, and lets you drive your own Porsche. Each autocross, Drivers’ Education event, or time trial our club offers has the emphasis on education with experienced instructors to help you learn. In these articles we will discuss driving technique from time to time, and will probably cover most of everything you need to review. However, the emphasis is on developing the cognitive skills that support and enhance the technique and give you a definite competitive edge and safety margin.
The first PCA event I participated in was a navigational rally. The challenge was to interpret the instructions correctly and stay on course -- It was like solving a puzzle or riddle. I definitely took a liking to the cerebral aspects of this competition. Soon thereafter, the autocross and time-trial bug hit, and I took my 928 out regularly to these performance driving events. I found that the track events were physical as opposed to the mental exercise of rallying. Or so I thought. More and more I am learning how important the mind is in performance driving, and that it is the key element to improvement of driving skills. Before we get much farther, we need to agree that it is worthwhile to work on improving the driver’s mind. First, there should be no question that the driver is the most significant variable in the driving equation. Yes, I know, there are many things you can do to your Porsche to make it faster. Yes, I know that soft compound tires, for example, make a big difference. But I have also seen many instances of notably good drivers being upstaged by even better drivers in their own car. Very conclusive proof of the difference drivers make can be found in the results of the Michelin Challenge at the 1992 Porsche Parade here in San Diego. At this event, a box-stock 968 was equipped with Michelin XGTs and Parade entrants were allowed to drive it around the ‘Grand-Prix’ course; a sort of mini-autocross in the Stadium’s Southeast lot. If I recall, I was in the top ten, with a group of us clustered within a few tenths of a second. Margie Smith-Haas was way out in front, with a lap time of over a second faster than the next best competitor. Now, you might argue that some drivers may have had an advantage over others if they were more familiar with the 968. It doesn’t matter -- either way, the driver is still the most important factor and can obviously make
a significant difference in lap times. Secondly, do we really need to go through all this ‘mind game’ crap to turn fast laps? Well, if you accept that the driver is the most important part of the car, what’s the most important part of the driver? No, not the stomach... No, not that either – shame on you! It’s the mind, of course. I have not performed experiments to remove a driver’s brain and see if lap times get worse (although at times I have driven so poorly that I felt like I forgot mine). But no matter how physical driving events may seem, there is a lot of thought that goes into operating a car at speed. Granted, one needs to be physically fit to compete in a time trial where the effort of 30 minute long run groups and heat can be exhausting. And I will be the first to say that professional racecar drivers are indeed athletes, with pulse rates of 150 plus for hours at a time. It’s just difficult to imagine being fast without concentrating and focusing on what you’re doing. Even hand-eye coordination requires a good deal of gray matter processing, if only at the subconscious level. When you are improving your driving skills at an event or during a season are you increasing your physical strength, or getting better at the mental aspects? Think about it… Three seconds per lap. Would you like to cut your autocross lap time by three seconds? I thought so! I cannot guarantee everyone will drop lap times by this much immediately, but I have proof that this much improvement can be made purely with the mind! Sorry, you’ll have to wait for a later article for the details of this secret. There are many avenues of improving the driver’s performance; getting more track time is one big contributor. But there is much to work on while driving other than just getting around the course and trying to learn it. Some of this learning happens at the subconscious level - by driving a course

anything lower. In the 944-Spec racing class Christopher Barrinton currently is leading with 56 points with Robert Deck and Morgan Trotter close behind with 36 and 35 points respectively. In Class FI, which is early model “modified” 911s, last year’s class champion and Chief of Tech Christian Van Fleet and David Palmquist are tied for 1st with 56 points each, and Rod Taylor currently sits 3rd with 41 points. Class IS consists primarily of 911 SCs. Ted Hoiberg, Chief of Workers, is leading the class with 56 points followed closely by Robert Goya with 55 points. In class JP, 1984-89 Carreras is lead by James Buck with 80 points (four 1st place finishes) followed by Kris Scheussler and Bob Florey with 53 points each. In the JP Ladies class, Karin Scheussler and Becky Scheussler are both driving the same Team Scheussler 911. These ladies are both fairly new to AutoX so
this should be an interesting battle. To date they each have 2 first place finishes. In class MS, modified Boxster S pilot Akira Kogawa leads the class with 4 first place finishes as does Hideki Okano in the stock Boxster S class of MS/S. Carolyn Shusterman is currently 1st in the ladies MS/S class with 28 points. However, Cathy O’Brien has 22 points and Katina Gonzales has 20. Thus, with seven more events remaining, any one of the girls could win this class. The Cayman S and the 993s compete in two of the largest classes this year. NS/S is where the “Street Stock” cars play and class N/S is for the slightly modified “Stock” Porsches. These two classes have 15 to 20 competitors in each class. Currently Chris Grivas leads Jeff Edwards, Tim Cox, Jim Seastom and Annie Bauer in the N/SS class and Duane Selby, Chief of Rules, has an 8 point lead over Lou Hudyman in N/S.
Kelly Hudyman, Radomin Delgado and Richard Stonehouse hold the 3rd through 5th spots. Another popular class is PS/S made up of 997 and 996 Carreras. With more than 10 competitors, Jonathan Gerber leads Greg Lush by 5 points. Jason Gerber, Bobby Ahn and Adam Nguyen are close behind. No driver in this class has more than one 1st place finish. This year the AutoX Team will present the Top Gun award to the driver who finishes with the most points using the BRI (Bragging Rights Index). Glistening Perfection Tech Session
May 17th was a nice warm day. Members of the Orange Coast
Region (OCR) gathered at our usual stop, Krispy Kremes, where sugar from the donuts fueled our adrenaline. After we had cleaned the sticky residue off our fingers, we fired up the engines in our Porsches and caravanned to Dynamic Air on Dyer Road in Santa Ana. This was the location that was selected by our tech session host: Moe Mistry of Glistening Perfection for his presentation; and it was perfect. We had ample parking for our cars and welcome shade over our heads, provided by a wonderful large rubber tree. The location couldn’t have been better for the 48 people and 31 cars that made it to the session. The session started off with a Continental-style (with a few additions) breakfast. The bagels, lox, bacon, sausage, coffee and other drinks were consumed on top of the sugar filled donuts that some had eaten at KK. After our second breakfast, we all returned to the shade of the tree and were well schooled by Moe. This gentleman knows what he is doing. Moe was the detailer on the Best of Show winner at the Pebble Beach Concours in 2005, which is a pretty good pedigree. Moe pointed out that there is no standard for detailers and that some have been known to destroy the paint on your car by “burning” the paint using improper methods or tools. Moe even stated that in the past even he has “burned” the paint

twice, but he is bonded for a sufficient amount to completely cover the repairs/repaint. How many detailers are actually bonded? I don’t think most detailers of our vehicles can say that. They may be okay for the grocery-getting car, but we have investments in our Porsches. Moe stated that he uses a technique that he calls “Trinity” which he uses for (a) Clay treatment (b) Polish and (c) Wax. The clay treatment is used to prepare the surface, the polish to smooth out, and the wax to protect the surface. The clay is always applied by hand and he uses two of his senses to make sure the treatment is performed correctly. Those senses are feel and sound. Yes, he can actually hear the clay going to work! The polish is then applied with a powered polish machine that must be selected and used with care to avoid the “burning” of the paint mentioned previously. He uses the Flex XC3401 VRG rather than the Porter Cable polisher some of you might own. This is a new technology and provides the best option between the Porter Cable and a rotary polisher. The final step of the process is the application of the wax, which is done by hand. The available waxes are each unique in qualities, composition, and also price; there is even a wax available for $30,000! The wax should bring out the color and reflect the smoothness achieved in the previous two steps, and it also protects the finish. The end product of this type of detailing is a car that you
and others will see and appreciate for its beauty. Moe is an excellent speaker. He answered all of the questions from the audience readily, giving us very useful information. He is also a supporter of our club and he is an advertiser in the Pandemonium. He sells the items he uses professionally so you may use them
in detailing the car yourself, or he can do the detailing to a very high standard for you. The kits and individual items that he sells are all available from Moe. Tech Session at Al Reed Wheel Polishing
On June 7 after the monthly breakfast club meeting at Original Mikes,
approximately 35 Porsches caravanned up the freeways (5 to the 57 to the 91) to 3010 E. Coronado Ave. in Anaheim for an open house by Al and Diane Reed. “We were quite surprised to see so many Porsches in our parking lot,” commented Al Reed. There were close to 75 OCR members all gathered in his shop for a presentation by Al, Diane, their son Chad and his wife, Jina. Also in attendance was one of their long time employees, Lei Lani.
The interview with Al & Diane went something like this:Question: Al, how long have you been doing wheel polishing?Al’s Answer: About 30 years.Question: Diane, when you and Al started this business, did you ever think it would grow like it has?Diane’s Answer: No, I thought Al was crazy. “You’re going to make a living doing what?”Question: Al, do you polish wheels for all makes of cars?Al’s Answer: Yes, but we specialize with Porsches.

Diane’s Answer: Yes, I used to do them at home while Al was watching TV, but now I’m trying to quit. We also have polished wheels for L.A. Rams players Nolan Cromwell, Merlin & his brother Phil Olsen. In 1993 we did over 100 wheels for the Indy Racing team of Roger Penske.
The Reeds’ shop was very well prepared to show us the wheels as they come in, the polishing process, then the finished product. The day ended all too soon. As we all headed out of their driveway Al and Diane waved and thanked us for coming. We thank you, Al, Diane, Chad, Jina and Lei Lani for allowing us to visit.

the 405 Freeway and another issue to put into the hands of the scampering printers devils down in the bowels of the press machines. What a bunch of stuff we have to write about this time. In case you haven’t noticed, we are having a vintage Orange Coast Region year. Starting with the fantastic White Glove Concours at the Huntington Beach Hilton. I don’t recall ever eating so well at another automobile event. Usually anything you get at something to do with cars goes better with mustard or catsup. Emphatically not so this time around folks! We dined and drank and danced in a covered tent steps from the blue (mostly) Pacific in our own private space. Concours Meister for 2008, Buzzy Klevens, put together a very memorable event for what is one of our signature weekends. I must admit right away that I didn’t win any awards for my unnaturally clean car, but I’m not carrying a grudge....not much anyway. By the way when I say unnaturally, I don’t mean that it was cleaned with anything other than the usual substances and elbow grease. I say unnaturally, because my car normally has at least a bit of road grime somewhere or other. Who ever said or called this patina has my vote for automotive genius because I think patina sounds so much more sophisticated than “dirt.” I have patina to spare. I am always proud when our OCR

folks do well and they did well, really well, splendidly well on this event. You will read about it in this issue because it is traditionally our White Glove Concours issue (remember don’t pronounce the “S”). Now let’s not forget about the driver types we’ve got in our club. I have just been adding captions to some great photographs taken at the June Autocross by our very own “Scoop” Barnhill and they are just crackerjack! I’m using that 19th century colloquialism intentionally because they are just that good. And we still have the opportunity of using El Toro which gives us some long track times, and great run-off areas to let the Carerras roam. Okay now comes the question, “Have you participated in any OCR event yet?” Dude or dudette... why in the world haven’t you been out there? Are you afraid that you won’t be accepted or will feel inadequate because you don’t have the latest and neatest from Stuttgart? Don’t worry, I know lots of our club members and they have a huge variety of Porsches. Come on out and join in...why did you buy that car if not to use it? Oh boy, I went to the Concours and won something! An alignment at Shore Line Motors on Beach Boulevard, right around the corner from my estate, Wistful Vista, so the drive was no big
deal either way. I want you to know that these nice folks fixed me up really well. I was relieved to find out that certainly the alignment was for the Porsche and not for me; although I personally could use one if you ask Mrs. Cooper. Anyway the show room is a really cool place to hang out with a beautiful Ferrari parked there. Every time someone walked in I’d jump up and stand with one arm on the car so these people would think it was really my car. I don’t think I fooled many of them but, hey, at least I had the minute or two to make them think. I would like to teach all of our readers another sophisticated car term: Rallye. Now this is the European spelling, you don’t pronounce it any differently than you would with “Rally” but it is so much more fun to be absolutely sophisticated isn’t it? It is this month’s Porsche vocabulary choice because Larry Moore is putting together a wonderful and fun rallye event that will be twisted, turned, folded, spindled, and mutilated. Now that might sound scary, particularly if you’re an IBM punch card, but actually it will be a good day for couples and their Porsches in Orange County. Larry is the evil Rallye genius for the club and has designed this one for the more casual rallye participant but not without its’ own share of challenges. I heartily suggest you get the Mr. or Mrs. to put on his or her duster and take to the road with Larry and his crew. I hope to be at this one myself. Say “howdy” if you come out, I’ll be the first guy lost.

over and over, we are bound to get better by familiarization. But we can improve this learning process by using some mental techniques, thereby improving the quality of our available track time. Have you ever wondered why some folks can learn a track in a lap or two, while others struggle with it for over a dozen laps? It is not due to physical conditioning or strength. The good news is that this talent CAN be learned by studying and practice. There are also ways to improve our skills when we are not actually driving on the track. If we can improve our skills while we are not physically on the course, this is kind of like getting extra track time - not a bad deal I’d say. Many areas we will cover in later chapters are common-sense items or things that we already do at the subconscious level. Some are new ideas. By bringing these topics up and discussing them, we increase our awareness of what goes on in our minds when we drive. This elevated awareness allows us to enhance the mental skills we already possess, and learn new ones. There are many benefits to improving your cognitive driving skills; you will improve your performance driving; you will be a safer driver on and off the track; you will be able to continue improving; you don’t have to spend money to go faster; and being smarter won’t make your car any less reliable. Plus, look at the list of modifications allowed in various classes. Nowhere will you find any penalty or points assessment for ‘improved brains’ - it is a completely legal modification in all forms of motorsports!
