Topical eye preparations

1. Topical antibiotics.2. Analgesics.3. Decongestants and antihistamines.4. Irrigants.5. Artificial tears.6. Vitamin A products.

Topical antibiotics

1. Aminoglycosides.2. Fluroquinolones.3. Fucidic acid.4. Chloramphenicol.

1 .Aminoglycosides

• Gentamicin (Apigen®) and Topramicin (Tobrex® ointment , TopraDex® suspension) .

• Against gram positive and some gram negative bacteria .

• Used for bacterial infection in the cornea , eyelid and tear ducts.

• Side effects: burning and irritation.

• Used for:1. Bacterial conjunctivitis . 2. Blephritis .3. After removal of foreign bodies or

abrasions.4. After chemical or physical agent

damage.5. Before and after eye surgery.

Fluoroquinolones

• Ofloxacin (Oflox® ).Ciprofloxacin (API-Ciprocin ®)

• Bactericidal .• Used for bacterial conjunctivitis and otitis

media.

Fucidic acid

• Optifucin ®• Used against Staph. and Strep.

Infections.• Uses : 1. Bacterial conjunctivitis.2. External hordeolum .

Chloramphenicol

• Phenicol ®• Bactericidal.• Mainly against gram negative as

hemophillus influenzea Bacterial conjunctivitis .

• Store between 2-8°C refrigerated .

2 .Analgesics

• Diclofenac 0.1% ( voltaren ®).• Welder’s arc .• Blunt truma need oral or topical

analgesic.

3 .Decongestants and antihistamines• For allergic and viral conjunctivitis.• Naphazoline hydrochlroride +

Pheniramine maleate (Naphcon A ®)• Apillerg ® /Spersallerg ®

• Decongestant alone Tetryzoline ( Efemoline ®)

• Antihistamine alone Ketotifen (Zaditen ®)

4 .Irrigants

• Sodium chloride 0.9 % ( Apisal ® )• Used for eye washing.• Not used if contact lens is in place.

5 .Artificial tears

• Used for dry eye and minor thermal damage.

• Carboxymethyl cellulose CMC Refresh tears ® , Refresh Plus ®, Celluvisc ®

• Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose HPMC Genteal ® , Genteal Gel ®

• Carbomer Liposic ®

6 .Vitamin A products

• Very important for vision accuracy .• Deficiency will lead to degenerative

opthalmic conditions.• Oral preparations.
