(SEM)totheNHS.ItpresentstheexpectedbenefitsthatSEMcanbringtotheNHS.
Itmakes5broadpoints:
1. Physicalactivityisaprovenwayofpreventingexpensiveanddebilitatingdiseases.
2. Peoplesufferingfromchronicdiseasescansignificantlyimprovetheirrecoveryandpreventco-morbidityiftheyexerciseaspartoftheirtreatment.
3. Musculoskeletal(MSK)injuriescosttheNHShugeamountsinunnecessaryGPand
orthopaedictime.Theycause50%ofallsicknessabsenceintheNHSalone–a
massive5milliondayseachyear.
4. Itcanbechallengingtogetpeopletoexercise,particularlyiftheyareunfit(seepoint
1)orill(seepoint2).Asaresult,theNHSismissingthesubstantialhealthand
financialbenefitsthatexercisecouldbringinbothpreventionandtreatment.
5. ThespecialtyofSportandExerciseMedicine(SEM)canhelp.
Ifthepracticalproblemsofchangingthebehaviourofthepopulationcouldbe
addressed,thebenefitstotheNHScouldbeverysignificant:
• 30%to50%reductionsofriskinthedevelopmentofcommonchronicconditions,
includingcancer,ischaemicheartdisease,obesityanddiabetes,dementiaand
depression.
• Significantimprovementsintheefficacyoftreatmentofthosesamechronic
conditions.
