Keeping with our Mission: To Know, To Love, and To Serve God in His Church and Our Community, we will be renewing and expanding our programs and activities as our campus continues to improve every single day. Many of the current Catholic Adult Organization programs like Bocce, SoulCore, and Boot Camps are now free for all Life Center Members going forward, along with our two free drinks during our Friday Night Happy Hour. We are enhancing those programs with upcoming activities like Zumba and Bingo. Additionally, we will be renewing programs like Faith and Wine and our Concert Series. Preparing for Sacraments in the New Year with Faith Formation

First Reconciliation CeremonyOur First Reconciliation Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, February 12th, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Ballroom. Parents please also attend the First Reconciliation Rehearsal on Thursday, February 7th, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Ballroom.

As 80 of our children enrolled in Faith Formation continue preparing for their First Reconciliation, here are some ways that parents and caregivers can help:• Practice the Sign of the Cross prayer with your child. They will begin their confession with the Sign of the Cross. (Using right hand)In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.• Help your child learn an Act of Contrition. The priest will ask your child to make an act of contrition. Most

of the children are learning this prayer in Faith Formation.O my God, I am sorry for my sins. In choosing to sin, and failing to do good, I have sinned against You and Your Church. I firmly intend, with the help of your Son, to make up for my sins and to love as I should. Amen.• Consider receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the days or weeks before your child’s First Reconciliation. Share your experience with your child.Reconciliation is offered at St. John on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

• Set aside 30-45 minutes to do each lesson in your child’s Reconciliation packet with them. Make this quality one-on-one time, if possible.• Encourage your child through this time of preparation. Bring them to Mass wearing the necklaces they received at the Enrollment Mass. Show them by your example, that just as your faith brought them to the sacrament of Baptism, you are here with them as their first teachers to love and support them as they receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Adult Faith FormationWinter 2019 Program and SchedulePull O

ut and Save

“I didn’t know that…” is the most common comment from those who experience an Adult Faith Formation program for the first time. AFF programs inform, engage, and enrich! AFF programs enable you to develop and grow an adult faith.

Is this the season for you to join other parishioners and visitors and experience firsthand the many benefits of developing adult answers to today’s difficult questions and situations? Is 2019 the year you learn what you didn’t know?

Your AFF team has organized a range of programs to make it easy for you to grow in your faith, as an adult.

If you are wondering about where to start, let us suggest you look first at what we consider Core Programs, which are comprehensive and broad, intended to form you in a fundamental area of the Faith, such as Church Teachings or Evangelization, the Bible, or the Mass.

Scheduling may be an important issue for you, so programs are offered at lunchtime Tuesday through Friday; bring your own or pick up lunch from the 5 Saints Café. Beverages are provided. Evening programs are on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday (after the 5:00 p.m. Mass). Again, hospitality is provided.

If you have children or grandchildren attending one of the Youth Faith Formation programs, including Confirmation, there are programs offered for you while your youth is in their program.

Each program is facilitated by an experienced and educated member of the Adult Faith Formation team. This winter, we are blessed to have three seasonal parishioners join us and bring their successful programs to Naples from “up North.”

So, examine the program offerings and review your schedule: Decide that this winter formation of your adult Catholic faith will be a priority.

Core Adult Faith Formation Programs

"Catholicism leads us to explore our Catholic Faith through stories, biographies, and images. Through this epic, award-winning series, we meet the ‘Word made Flesh’ not only in theological formulations but also in saints and poets, cathedrals and chants, priests, and prophets.”For the first time, in breathtaking and high-definition cinematography, the truth, goodness, and beauty of Catholicism are illustrated in a multimedia experience. Journey with Bishop Robert Barron to more than 50 locations throughout 16 countries. Be illuminated by the spiritual and artistic treasures of this global culture that claims more than one billion of the earth's people. Learn what Catholics believe and why. Discover the full meaning of the faith. This ten-part, award-winning series was a hit on PBS when it debuted ten years ago and continues to “make me look at common concepts in our religion from an entirely different perspective,” according to one parishioner. “This is an eye opener for a lifelong Catholic who has merely participated in my religion,” said another.Catholicism is offered on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. beginning January 17, and continuing for ten weeks. You can attend either session or one time one week and the other time another week. There is no requirement to attend all sessions, just come when you can.If you have not really studied our Catholic faith since way back when you were in Catechism class; if you are not Catholic but are interested in learning about our beautiful Catholic faith; or if you simply want to more fully appreciate your Catholic faith, do not miss this opportunity. It is well worth your time!

THE CATHOLIC FAITH AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE

(Catholicism 101)

Most Catholics want to read the Bible, but without a guide, they find it hard to begin and easy to give up. This engaging journey through the Bible provides the easiest way to understand the Bible. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple.Read the 14 narrative books of the Bible that keep the story moving, and discover the amazing story woven throughout Scripture.Learn how the key people, places, and events in the Bible fit together to reveal God’s plan for humanity.Study the Bible from a Catholic perspective and see how our faith is rooted in Sacred Scripture.See how the events in the Old Testament are fulfilled in the New Testament by Christ and the Church.Gain a greater appreciation for the Scripture readings you hear during Mass.See how God reveals himself to us through Scripture and learn how God’s Word applies to your life today.Develop a life-long hunger for knowing God in his word and lay a strong foundation for further Bible reading and study.UNLOCKING is offered on Sundays at 6:00 p.m. beginning January 13, and continuing for eight weeks. It is also scheduled on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. beginning January 27, and meeting only on the Sundays when the youth have faith formation programs. This program utilizes the Bible Timeline Chart, a simple, color-coded timeline of Bible history, so purchase of the Study Guide is recommended.

THE BIG PICTURE OF THE BIBLE IN JUST EIGHT WEEKS

(Bible Study 101)

A Recent Addition to the Core: THE MASS

We generally agree on the importance of going to Mass, but can we clearly articulate why? Walk through the Liturgy of the Mass with Bishop Barron, and you'll be transformed through insights on this most privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ. The Mass will help you understand how to fully, consciously, and actively participate in the source and summit of the Christian life. This program was debuted in September and added to the CORE based on the fantastic parishioner reaction. Some quotes: “It’s not just an obligation, it’s an opportunity for a personal encounter with Jesus.” And “It helped me understand WHY I go to Mass and WHAT I’m doing during Mass.”This six-week program is offered on Wednesdays at 5:45 p.m. beginning January 23, and concludes on February 27.See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. This six-session study begins Wednesday, January 23, at 5:30 p.m.

TUESDAYS AT 11:30

The Mass: The Biblical Basis with Emphasis on the Book of

RevelationBy tracing the origins of the Mass from the “Breaking of the Bread” by St. Paul right up to the most recent changes in 2011, we will relate every word we say and every gesture we make back to scriptural passages and our rich Catholic tradition.Three sessions will be devoted entirely to the Book of Revelation in which we will learn about the meaning of the “Wedding Supper of the Lamb,” the real presence of “Heaven on Earth” at the Mass and “The Second Coming of Jesus Christ.”The Book of Revelation, in its prophetic genre, not only describes what the end of the world will look like, it also addresses how we will experience the final judgement and hopefully the promise of eternal life in the “New Jerusalem,” i.e., The Kingdom of God.

Our lives as Catholic Christians is made complete by our attendance at Mass, and this course will open your heart to experiencing the full context of Mass. This eight-session study begins Tuesday, January 22, at 11:30 a.m.

WEDNESDAYS AT 11:30

Epic: A Journey Through Church History

This exciting series takes you through the major people, places, and events that make up the history of the Catholic Church. See the glory of the Church founded by Christ and understand where you fit into this Epic story. Church History Taught from a Solid Catholic Perspective. This 10-session study begins Wednesday, January 16, at 11:30 a.m.

CATHOLICISM, see info in Core Programs

This ten-session study begins Thursday, January 17, at 11:30 a.m.

FRIDAYS AT 11:30

Christian Meditation instruction and practice will not only introduce and explain Christian Meditation but explore and demonstrate how meditation can benefit your soul, by centering on God. So, meditation is a prayer form.We now have scientific research to document that it also benefits your body, by reducing stress and lowering blood pressure, as well as other benefits. Each session ends with a meditation experience using various imaging techniques. During the lecture and discussion part of each class, there is an introduction to understand consciousness (religion calls it Soul, and science calls it Mind). When we understand what our consciousness is and how meditation can benefit us, we tend to be more serious about the work of meditation, because meditation is work.Various deep imaging techniques are explored. New material has been added to each session so even those who have attended a prior Christian Meditation program will benefit. This eight-session study begins Friday, January 11, at 11:30 a.m.

Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come

The next book of the Bible to be covered by Ascension Press is Revelation. This follows Matthew, but no previous program is required to understand this intriguing study that shows how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. Here you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. This 11-session study begins Monday, January 21, at 6:00 p.m.

The Pivotal Players, Part I and II

SAINTS. ARTISTS. MYSTICS. SCHOLARS.Bishop Barron is on a new journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church's most influential people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. For two years, Father Robert Barron, now Bishop Barron, took his camera crew to a dozen places in the world to discover the figures who shaped

the Church and changed the world, the Pivotal Players. Each episode stands alone, so you can attend all or just the ones you select or fit your schedule. This Word on Fire documentary film production is part beautiful travelogue, and 100% solid theology. In this journey, Barron unlocks the truth behind the Catholic Church's most influential people and illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. The first Pivotal Player is Michelangelo, the Artist, who proves that the sensual, the artistic, and the beautiful can be a vehicle to the spiritual. He dramatically demonstrated that beauty and creativity are a primary route of access to God.This master of sculpture and painting is not a saint but serves as the privileged representative of the creative potential engendered by the Catholic Faith. Through humanity’s creative artistry we glimpse the power and glory of the Lord. They filmed not only the places where Michelangelo lived and worked, but also some of his greatest works, the Pieta, David, and the Sistine Chapel. In the words of the artist himself, “Every beauty which is seen here by persons of perception resembles more than anything else that celestial source from which we all are come.”Subsequent weeks you will meet:ST. AUGUSTINE of HIPPO, the Teacher – through his literary genius and spiritual perception, he allowed numberless people over the centuries to see their own stories of sin and grace in his.ST. BENEDICT of NURSIA, the Monk – may be the most pivotal of all the Pivotal Players because his monks and spiritual descendants contributed to the saving of Christian culture in the West.ST. FRANCIS of ASSISI, the Reformer – radically and literally lived as Jesus commanded, to transform the Church.ST. CATHERINE of SIENA, the Mystic – gave testimony to the reality of the

spiritual dimension, here and beyond.ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, the Theologian – demonstrated that faith and reason are not at odds, as they come from the same source.BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, the 20th century British convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith.G.K. CHESTERTON; this joyful English journalist and evangelist was a larger-than-life figure who charmed his way into the heart of the modern culture and illuminated the dull philosophy of the age with his clever Catholic brilliance. This evangelist publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of Christianity. You may also know him as the author of the Father Brown mystery series. This 8-session study begins Monday, January 21, at 7:00 p.m.

IN-DEPTH BOOK STUDYto be scheduled if there is interest; reply to [email protected] for more information.Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist by Dr. Brant PitreInspiring and informative, this

book is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus’ presence in “the breaking of the bread.”Dr. Brant Pitre uses the Hebrew Scriptures and Jewish tradition to frame the actions of Jesus at the Last Supper and to provide a fresh look at the heart of Catholic practice — the Eucharist. By taking us back to the Jewish roots of our faith, Dr. Pitre gives us a powerful lens through which to see anew the bread of the presence, the manna, the Last Supper, and ultimately the meaning of the Eucharist.

Performed by the amazing Kevin O’Brien

and his acting troupe from Theater of the Word Incorporated

REGISTER NOW at www.Faithandwine.comAdam and Eve have been married for thousands of years, but things aren't going so well lately. He says the problems began when they ate the apple, realized they were naked, and Eve insisted, "I'll wear the plants in this family!" She replies that the only reason she married Adam is there was nobody else available – literally! And so they find a counselor who is very wise and who seems to know everything about what it takes to make a marriage work. In fact, this marriage counselor has a mysterious identity of his own, which Adam and Eve discover during the course of this imaginative romantic comedy!
