<Friday, August 29, 1862> Marched five[?] miles to Annandale, and hiveackes[?] until 6 am <Saturday 30> On this morning – then marched to Annandale about four miles from Alexandria – Men are encamped about 5 PM and pitched our tents. I had with with my associates MD’s a good supper and talking possessing of decent hours. <Sunday 31> Arrived on the … and got in terrible array. Order to [?] me within night at a distance sheet explored. Baum’s[?] very good[?] at home. No busy work at night but heard cavalry. In evening took possession of a decent house and cabin where we are encamped. <Monday, September 1, 1862> This am we awoke facing battle, hits have occurred beside us. Hospital filled with wounded & dying – Attended to some hurt[?] men, ordered NY, but a terrific storm out in about 5 which punishes. But Kenney pressed them straight down the entire line. We started for Amfow[?], but roads filled there, sent with wind and [continued through next two dates] <Tuesday 2> at 5 am we encamped a mile away in field about a mile from Taifar[?]. army about 2 Pur[?], our army at this time were about town. Light makeshift campground. Expecting any moment an attack. Drew up battle away for the many feared a contest & withdrew. We then started for camp ahead – Our rear ground was attacked but were victorious. <Wednesday, September 10, 1862> Still at camp near Darristown[?], Md. Was in battle array yesterday but nothing appeared to need me – Started this afternoon morning and after marching 12 miles arrived about four miles from the Sugar Loaf Mt in which are the Rebels – <Thursday 11> are still at camping ground of last night – <Friday 12> Started this errand[?] at 8 am[?] and after a tedious, long, disagreeable march to Sugar Loaf Mountain arrived about 2 miles beyond Erbank, Md. The enemy in force are [sic] in battle array within 2 miles from us – <Saturday 13> Marched 8 miles in the burning sun….. after the Rebs had passed thru Buckeystown, Md – Retried in an open field and passed in very cold night – <Sunday 14> Started at 5 1/2 PM Engaged Rebels in Blue Ridge Mts above – terrible slaughteron Rebels side – loss 20 taken prisoner – Our Reg. lost 10 killed & 45 wounded. – The battle was a terrific awe[?] resulting in the withdrawal of the Rebels who lost a battle. <Monday 15> Was detailed to remain in the Hospital with Drs. Robertson[?], Oakley – N.J., Warren – Md. Attending to some 70 patients. The rebels lose [sic] again this PM. Board well with this new Hospital. <Tuesday 16> Our patients are doing very well. Amputated left arm for Sergt. [Sergeant] Elkanah Y. of 16th Reg. Succeeded very well and patient doing well – Hunt over the battle field and saw many dead rebels. <Wednesday 17> As yesterday – nothing new now

<Thursday 11> The NY moved to White Oak Church in the P. M. <Friday, December 12, 1862> Here I am in the wilds of Berglum Swing[?] in charge of a hospital, an old negro[?] church. In the distance the loud booming of the cannon can be distinctly heard – Our attempt had made hard might to steal my horse & to day sent him to the Regiment. <Saturday 13> I awoke this morning by the noise of musketry, which was brought from heavy cannonading.
