Top-class talent for Blue Heeler Film FestivalContinued from front page

WRITER, DIRECTOR AND PRODUCER: Internationally-recognised Davo Hardy (pictured) will present the BHFF winner with the Bluey Award at this weekend’s Blue Heeler Film Festival.

The Australian film industry is one of the oldest in the world, with the first dedicated film studio in the world being established in Melbourne, and the world’s first feature film being made right here in Australia.

It’s interesting to note that over the past one hundred years, the Australian film industry has continued to provide the rest of the world with the finest actors, directors, writers, producers, and technicians. Along with this are more than forty Academy awards that have been won by Australians, along with a host of technical and engineering awards.

A vital part of keeping the industry alive and ensuring the future is the small film festivals that operate around the country, providing the young, would-be filmmakers a place to show their ideas and work. This is really the ‘grass roots’ of the film industry in this country.

Mr Hardy told Up Country Entertainer he was very impressed by the skills blossoming filmmakers in the Upper Hunter demonstrated in their entries. “I saw some great talent when it came to acting, camera work and editing. I have no doubt that with the right direction, some of these budding filmmakers could go a long way,” Mr Hardy said.

So get ready for the Blue Heeler Film Festival – the films will be screened at Highbrook Park from 5.30pm on Friday September 23, with all welcome at this alcohol-free community event. A red carpet awards night will be held at Two Rivers the following evening. Mr Hardy’s feature film ‘Hunting Shadows,’ which stars Paul Mecurio will also be launched at the event.

More than just an art gallery

Murrurundi’s Michael Reid Gallery is continuing to expand its range of natural Australian products, adding lip balm and smoked salt flakes to its already impressive range. The Olsson family has continued the Nordic tradition, smoking salt flakes over native river red gums at their property near Canberra. The result is a unique salt with complex characteristics.

The lip balm forms part of the locally made Big Brown Dog range and is made from beeswax, olive oil, cocoa butter and glycerine.

A new look for Singleton FestivalSingleton Festival preparations are well underway and now is the time for anyone who wants to celebrate the district’s food, music, art and wine to put their hand up and get involved. A change of date is likely to see even more activities on the program with the move to May hoping for slightly warmer weather than the traditional July period. The 2017 event is the big festival and kicks off on April 29 wrapping up on May 14. Already Sacred Spaces has locked in two key concerts which are sure to attract a broad audience. For now, the committee would like to hear from any community group, school or charity that would like to be involved in the program. This could be something as simple as having an open day for your group or a special theme night at a local restaurant.

Anyone wanting to know more about the program or wanting to get involved is welcome to contact the Singleton Visitor Information and Enterprise Centre on 6571 5888.

What’s on at Upper Hunter Libraries?A whole host of fun activities are in store for everyone at Upper Hunter regional libraries this spring. If you’re feeling crafty you can learn to make nail polish marbled planters, t-shirt bags or recycled old CD wind chimes at separate workshops. Two author visits are also planned with Katrina McKelvey & Kirrili Lonergan scheduled to speak about their book ‘Dandelions’ on October 5. Author Melissa Jacob will speak about her memoir ‘In Sickness, In Health and In Jail’ on October 20.

Garage Sale Trail on againSingleton households, schools and community groups are set to join hundreds of thousands of people across the country on Saturday 22 October as part of national reuse, community and sustainable living movement, Garage Sale Trail.

Launched in 2010, Garage Sale Trail has grown from a grassroots

event to a program powered by over 150 councils nationally. By

organising communities around Australia to host and shop at garage

sales on one big day, Garage Sale Trail aims to encourage reuse, unite

communities, create awareness around the issues of illegal dumping,

provide a platform for fundraising and inspire creativity.
