Garden birds like it when we give them a helping hand during the colder months. With the help of a grown-up, use our instructions to make fat balls that your garden birds will thank you for (this can get messy so the perfect activity to do in your garden!).

Grab a grown up. Roll up your sleeves and take the lard out of its packet. Ask the grown up to divide the lard into six smaller pieces. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl. Take a small piece of lard and, over the bowl, start pushing the dry materials into it. Once all six have been made pop them on a bird table in your garden for the birds to enjoy.

How to make fat ballsUse one part lard to two parts dry ingredients. For the dry ingredients you could use...

AVOID desiccated coconut and cooked oats as these can be harmful to birds. Don’t use turkey fat to bind the ingredients as it doesn’t set like lard and can stick birds’ feathers together – leaving them unable to fly.
