Latest generation (S8 and later) Samsung-manufactured smartphones and tablets will be promoted as card payment acceptance devices for contactless transactions of any amount through Fiserv (formerly First Data) in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and Asia-Pacific (APAC). Fiserv’s Software Point of Sale (SoftPOS) mobile app uses embedded near field communication (NFC) functionality to accept payments from cards, mobile phones, wearables, and key fobs. A SoftPOS pilot will take place in Poland by the end of 2019 where Visa and Mastercard contactless payments are already popular. The SoftPOS test will focus on micromerchants, which are those with small, low-value transactions.

Samsung further supports the contactless payment terminal initiative with Knox multilayered security protocols it preinstalls in the architecture of phones, tablets, and wearables to protect against malware, ransomware, and unauthorized rooting. All data is immediately encrypted in the Samsung devices.

Fiserv is working with Visa, Mastercard, and Samsung to bring SoftPOS to EMEA and APAC. SoftPOS is PCI-compliant, including supporting PIN data entry on a phone or tablet screen. John Gibbons is Executive VP and head of EMEA at

One of the top providers of payment cards in the U.S., CPI Card Group, is the first to market with an EMV-compliant card

manufactured using a core of recovered plastic waste from land areas within 31 miles (50 kilometers) of an ocean or near a stream or river that feeds into an ocean. CPI Card Group has filed for patent protection for manufacturing processes related to handling the ocean-bound plastic used to create what it calls Second Wave cards, a name it has trademarked.

CPI Card’s investment includes vetting suppliers to confirm that recycled material was recovered from areas where the debris would have entered the ocean. It intends to create a suite of card products that use this recovered material.

Second Wave cards are available for contact and dual-interface applications.

Separately, American Express has announced it will issue consumer and commercial Green cards in 2020 using reclaimed plastic, primarily from beaches, islands, and coastal communities. The reclaimed plastic will be obtained through Parley Ocean Plastic. CPI Card Group will not be the manufacturer.

Parley has created a global supply chain for marine plastic debris.

American Express will also initiate a card recycling program in 2020 for U.S. region consumer, small business, and commercial cards. Cardholders will send expired plastic cards back to American Express. The company has also pledged to help Parley remove up to one million pounds of marine plastic from beaches. without modification or replacement. Verrency’s real-time platform operates on Amazon Web Services (AWS) but can be modified for Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and other PCI-compliant cloud environments. Its

standard service configuration has been tested at 3,000 transactions per second, per customer at under 100 millisecond latency with 99.999% availability.

Middleware takes less time to deploy and is less costly than writing new code to modify legacy software or migrating to new technology. Verrency, which is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified, can complete a deployment, direct to market or to a sandbox, in four months. It has also built a partner network of over 40 companies, which, on a white-label basis, offer API-based services that issuers, processors, banks, and super-apps can use to redeem rewards, facilitate

disbursements, round up payments to savings or charitable accounts, deliver installment credit to the point of sale, pay with points in

real time, and access dozens of other use cases.

One of those partners is Coinify.

When connected to Verrency, Coinify lets banks give consumers the ability to use their cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets for payment at any Visa, Mastercard, or local-market-only merchant using existing card

infrastructure. Coinify provides virtual currency to fiat currency conversion services anywhere in the world to businesses and individuals by way of a technology-agnostic gateway.

Verrency, which signed its first client less than two years ago, operates on a software-as-a-service basis. Clients including FIS, Emirates NBD, eftpos, and Banco Davivienda pay a monthly minimum and a monthly per-card fee. Emirates NBD uses Verrency to operate its Liv credit card, which lets cardholders customize their own rewards program, including changing its parameters in real time. Neither Emirates NBD nor its processor, Network International, had to write

special code to accommodate Liv cards. David Link is CEO

to high-security cards. The companies expect biometric payment cards will gain increasing

acceptance by card issuers. However, biometric

payment cards, which provide greater security at the point of sale than a PIN, will become

mass-market only if the cost is significantly reduced. Idemia

and Zwipe are investing several million

euros to make that happen. The partners will use that

money to put on a single chip the functions that currently require a secure element, a microcontroller, and more than 30 other external components, all of which are mounted on a flexible, printed circuit board.

Of the 20 tests of biometric cards worldwide over the last three years, 12 have used Zwipe technology. Idemia and Zwipe say their new platform will be available to issuers in the second half of 2020, with high-volume production available in 2021.

Zwipe will have exclusive global rights to offer the single chip technology to manufacturers of cards, wearables, and other payment devices as well as to suppliers. Idemia will own the intellectual property rights. It will sell biometric payment cards under the F.Code trademark. The Idemia/Zwipe integrated single chip technology will be agnostic to the type of fingerprint sensor, passive inlay, and EMV chip.

Card manufacturers have a choice—build their own biometric card technology platform, as Idemia is doing, or buy the technology from third parties. Competitors to the integrated Idemia/Zwipe platform will include Infineon and NXP. Idemia wants to be the first to market.

Multiple options for card manufacturers and their issuer clients are necessary to

move biometric cards beyond being a niche product. When manufacturers and issuers have lower-cost technology and mass-market deployments are feasible, the industry will face another hurdle—agreeing on the best option for enrolling a cardholder’s fingerprint for their new card (downloads, in branch, at home). Downloads to a smartphone

would be the least expensive. Before that can happen, Apple will have to agree to participate,

something it has not done in any test of biometric payment cards.Amanda Gourbault is Executive

Empsa’s first meetings will be in Zurich in October. Among the association’s goals are the creation of standards to support cross-border interoperability of person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-business (P2B) transactions.

Empsa’s inaugural members include Bluecode (Austria and Germany), Bancontact Payconiq (Belgium), MobilePay (Denmark and Finland), Vipps (Norway), Sibs (Portugal), Swish (Sweden), and Twint (Switzerland). More than 350 banks and other financial institutions are affiliated with the mobile payment firms. Collectively, the group has 25 million users who have access to over one million point-of-sale (POS) locations. Most POS outlets are in Sweden and Denmark.

A common denominator among Empsa’s initial membership group is that most P2P and P2B payments these companies facilitate are settled to a current account versus a credit card or debit card network. There are more than 90 mobile P2P

money transfer services in the 23 countries of the European Economic Area (EEA). Most are integrated into a mobile banking app. Even in countries with 2 or more mobile P2P services, money transfers between different systems are not possible without the sender and receiver exchanging data, including

the 34 alphanumeric characters that comprise an international bank account number (IBAN).

EquensWorldline launched a service in the first quarter of this year that replaces the need for parties in a P2P transaction to exchange IBAN information. Joseph Hajj is Chief Strategy Officer at Swish in
