TESTIMONALSStephanie:I wanted to be a part of this fellowship because I wanted to do meaningful work

uring my last summer of college and its a good experience to have as I move forward in my

    areer.

Avery:I like that 1000 Shilling teaches women skills rather than just giving them money.stead they teach them how to make money for themselves. I also loved how closely they worked

ith the women on a one on one personal basis it makes the connection that much stronger.

Pelin:I wanted to do something, specifically in film, that I havent done before in annvironment I havent been before. I wanted to meet new people and learn about the lives of these

    omen.

LeeAnn:I think this fellowship is the perfect package. Being able to work with women acrosshe world and help them help themselves was really ideal. I loved that 1000 Shillings didnt give

ut money, but instead taught them to skills so that they can hopefully continue helping each

ther help themselves when we are gone. As a photographer, I wanted to experience a new

dventure and get to know a new place.

Meredith:My personal goal for the Fellowship was to get a lot of photography practice. Ando get concrete feedback to expand on later in life. I wanted to affect change or be a part of social

hange with these women because I could see how the program would be successful and I was

xcited to see that in action and put it into action.

Elizabeth - Last year Elizabeth was struggling to makeends meet and provide for her six children. All of her

children were not in school and she was losing money on the

vegetable stand she was running because her produce would

often perish before she could sell her stock. Since workingwith 1000 Shillings, Elizabeth has been able to use her grant

to save and buy a plot of land to grow her own vegetables

She has also been able to expand her vegetable stand to

include rice! In year two of the 1000 Shillings program

Elizabeth used her microgrant to expand her business by

buying a scale to weigh the rice she sells. She no longer loses

money by estimating weights and prices. The true success of

Elizabeths business can be seen in her ability to now pay fo

rent, food and all six children to attend school.

Martha - When we meet Martha she was doing back-breaking manual labor working on the ground of the local

hospital trying to support herself and children. The job

required her to work all day in the hot Ugandan sun bent over

digging in the ground, which was hard on her 43-year-old

body, and the pay did not cover her and her familys expenses.

Martha became involved in the 1000 Shillings program, and

received an initial grant that allowed her to start a charcoal and

cassava flour business. This initial grant and the businesses

she started have allowed Martha to move to a two-room

house with concrete floors, a significant improvement from

the one-room mud hut Martha was living in. Martha is also

able to eat regular meals and pay for all seven of her children

to attend school. Martha received a smaller grant in her

second year of the 1000 Shillings program, and she is using

the money to begin selling honey.

Esther- Esther is our biggest success story! When we met

Esther she was three months behind on rent, she had no job

her kids were sick with malaria and typhoid, and she could

only afford to feed her family one small meal per day. Now

Esther has started a business selling charcoal, which allows

her to pay rent and feed her family three meals per day

Moreover, Esther was able to purchase a pig, which she plans

to breed and sell the piglets for future income. An indicator

of wealth in Namatala is the use of luxury items, like sugar,

so you can imagine our joy when Esther reported that she is

now taking sugar in her tea!
