Darling Downs Health is moving forward with plans to redevelop Toowoomba Hospital. The redeveloped hospital will bring world-class, innovative health care to Toowoomba and the Darling Downs region.

Redevelopment project progressing

While Darling Downs Health and its clinical staff have been focused on the immediate priority of providing care to those impacted by COVID-19 in recent months, planning is continuing for the future redevelopment of Toowoomba Hospital.

The Baillie Henderson Hospital campus, a 75-hectare tree-lined site to the city’s north, is the selected site for the Toowoomba Hospital redevelopment.

The redeveloped hospital will deliver new and expanded health care services to the region to cater for its growing population, provide access to the latest medical technologies, create an environment that promotes health and wellbeing and set the hospital up for a sustainable future.

Darling Downs Health and Building Queensland are working together on a detailed business case that will help the Queensland Government make informed decisions about the hospital’s design, staging and funding.

The detailed business case will be presented to the Queensland Government in late 2020 for consideration.

New and expanded health care services for Toowoomba

Toowoomba’s population is growing, along with its demand for health services. The redeveloped Toowoomba Hospital will be larger and provide a range of health services that are not currently provided in Darling Downs Health facilities.

The redeveloped Toowoomba Hospital will have more beds, treatment areas, emergency department spaces and operating theatres to cater for the region’s growing population and health care needs.

Health and wellbeing Key benefits of redeveloping the Toowoomba Hospital at the Baillie Henderson Hospital campus are the large size of the site and the tree-lined natural environment.

The redeveloped hospital’s design includes a series of medium height buildings to take advantage of the natural topography of the campus and to maximise surrounding mountains views. The buildings provide visual and physical access to the natural surrounds for patients and staff.

The redeveloped hospital’s modern facilities would also provide a safer and more secure campus for workers, patients and their visitors.

Technology Technologies including artificial intelligence, genomics, data analytics, digital wearable devices, apps, robotics, virtual reality, drone technology and 3D printing are influencing the way health care is provided.

Toowoomba Hospital’s redevelopment provides the opportunity to more easily integrate these and future digital technologies into the hospital.

Sustainable future The new hospital buildings would integrate a range of environmentally sustainable initiatives including natural daylight and ventilation where possible, rainwater harvesting, energy efficiency measures such as LED lighting, careful selection of construction materials, smart metering, recycling and solar energy generation.

The hospital’s design and large site area allows for future expansion within the health campus, providing for additional growth as needed.

#1Heritage The hospital’s design embraces the site’s history by integrating heritage buildings into the overall health campus. Heritage buildings will be refurbished and repurposed for allied health, training and administration activities.

#2Cancer Care Centre The Cancer Care Centre will provide a dedicated facility for the treatment of cancer.

Master planned health campus

The master planned health campus, with the redeveloped Toowoomba Hospital at its core, aims to attract a range of multi-disciplinary health services, research, education, and community uses including childcare, accommodation, aged care, allied health, private health services, biomedical research and training.

Car parking and public transport

Car parking will be provided across the site for patients, staff and visitors.

Discussions with TransLink are ongoing to develop public transport options for the redeveloped hospital.

Heritage Buildings Future Master Planned areas

#3Technology Dedicated spaces for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) have been included in the hospital’s design to allow robotic vehicles to help deliver goods around the hospital.

#4Main acute hospital The main acute hospital building will be home to most of Toowoomba Hospital’s health services.

#5Acute mental health building A dedicated acute mental health facility will provide a range of mental health services.

#6Natural environment The new health and knowledge precinct will bring together the heritage of the site’s past, with the future of Toowoomba’s health care in an open, tree-lined, natural setting.
