It’s quite the journey to get there too, merely clicking your heels won’t cut it. First you pack your bags and put on your sunglasses. Then you sing along to the lyrics of your favorite song ever whilst focusing on the happiest memory you can think of. You’ll now see that your magical TomorrowWorld wristband will light up. Rub it three times. Quickly, there’s not much time. A few seconds later a doorway will form itself right in front of you, beyond here lies the path to TomorrowWorld. Jump through the doorway and hop from one cloud to another. Warning: look out for

meteorites and wandering spaceships that have lost their course. Don’t let these deceive you to leave your intergalactic path. At the end of the lane of clouds you will find a huge golden gate that is guarded by two gorgeous flowerelves. This is the one and only official entrance to TomorrowWorld. In order to get in, you shall first have to prove your dance moves to one of the two elves, after which you’ll whisper the secret ancient password in the ear of the other elf. What’s that password? It’s easy, really: Live Today, Love Tomorrow, Unite Forever.

TOMORROWLAND’S YEARLY EXCURSION TO ATLANTA HAS BY NOW BECOME A WELL-KNOWN PHENOMENON. FOR THE SECOND TIME LAST YEAR, THE CHATTAHOOCHEE HILLS OVERFLOWED WITH MAGIC AND JOY. IT WAS TIME TO CONTINUE GROWING, AND LAST MAY, THE STORY OF TOMORROW SPREAD TO A WHOLE NEW CONTINENT WITH TOMORROWLAND BRASIL. 180,000 VISITORS MADE CLEAR JUST HOW GLORIOUS THE FESTIVAL IS IN THAT FARAWAY LAND. OVER 200 ARTISTS MANNED SEVEN STAGES AS A TEAM OF 400 BELGIAN PEOPLE AND 500 BRAZILIANS BROUGHT THE BOOK OF WISDOM TO SÃO PAULO. To Belgian people, it’s an adult Efteling. To the Americans, a dance-fueled Disneyland. And to

Brazilians? Carnival!

At Maeda Park, Itu, where Tomorrowland Brasil was held this spring, it was like a party-bomb had been dropped. Whereas the original Tomorrowland in Boom took quite a few years to reach its full stature, and the American edition underwent slight growing pains at first, their Brazilian counterpart was an instant hit. And it was mostly thanks to the Brazilians themselves, as they warmly embraced Tomorrowland and made for an absolutely stunning atmosphere. Everyone in Maeda Park thought themselves king or queen of the carnival. With the afternoon temperatures approaching 85ºF, the dance floor shook and trembled under the Brazilians’ smoothly executed moves. They formed a surging sea of dancers all the way up to the Main Stage, where the iconic Book of Wisdom told the third chapter of its wonderful history. There’s no stage in the world that’s traveled as many miles by sea as this one.

BELGIAN FRIES IN ITUJust like back “home,” Tomorrowland Brasil served more than just exquisite beats. It was also a feast for the tongue. Visitors not only got a taste of Belgian fries, but also of a dessert developed by Callebaut Chef Bertrand Busquet. Called “Planeta Amazonia,” it was a cream

of uvaia (a tropical citrus fruit) and Callebaut Single Origin Brazil chocolate – with a twist. And speaking of liquor: It’s a myth that Brazilians only drink caipirinhas. They’ll take them as an appetizer for their BBQ (called ‘churrascaria’ over there), but they drink mostly beer otherwise: 200,000 litres of it were consumed.One half of Wolfpack, Antwerp-based Ruben Khaza, told us about his Brazilian debut at the festival. “During that set I had goosebumps from start to end. I’ve never experienced that before. Every record we played was responded to as if it were a top hit.” The smallest piece of firework lighting up got the crowd cheering wildly, just like they do at the shows in Boom. But organizing a festival just by putting up some stages and setting off some sparklers wouldn’t be very impressive. The relocation of a whole world of ideas, a way of life even, to another culture is another story entirely. That’s why every new location for Tomorrowland is researched extensively. Finding the right place is key to long-time success when you want to recreate and cultivate this festival.

HOME MATCHSão Paulo was also a bit of a guaranteed success, however. If there’s anything that’ll excite anyone from Brazil, it’s the miraculous fairytale

world of Tomorrow. It’s a modern-day carnival. By the immediate announcement of next year’s edition, the organizing parties made clear that Tomorrowland is in Brazil to stay. In the long run, the Brazilian team will take over more and more from the Belgians, organizing and producing the festival locally. With that fact in mind, an enormous storehouse has been bought near Itu, so all of the decorations and stages will have a place to stay.

For us, the festival came to an end after a conversation with a Brazilian guy not as lucky as us. It was our hotel receptionist, who hadn’t been able to get tickets for Tomorrowland. “Of course I hope to be there next year,” he tells us. “But most of all I would love to go to Boom. That’s where the roots are. It’s so much more than a Brazilian festival – in Boom, the whole world comes together.” And then, in a somewhat trembling voice: “It is there that I once want to exchange thoughts and ideas, to dance and have fun with young people from other cultures.” Clearly, the grass is greener on the far side of the hill (or pond, in this case) – but one thing’s for certain: Tomorrowland Brasil was more than worthy of its name.

Tomorrowland is one of the most global festivals in the world. No less than 214 different nationalities tried to obtain a ticket in 2014. Festival goers are known to bring their flags and represent their nations in harmony with many thousands of people around them. It’s that binding force, the ability to bring people of different races, ethnicities, religions and nationalities together with one common goal – to enjoy music and togetherness – that has drawn the United Nations’ attention, eliciting praise for Tomorrowland’s efforts.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who said he was ‘touched’ to have the panel in his name, recognizes a number of the UN’s core values in Tomorrowland: dignity, respect, diversity and solidarity. He expressed his hopes that visitors who see the message on the bridge will be remembered of the UN’s works through that connection.

“The festival and the bridge both underline the critical role of creative thought in our efforts to build a safer, more prosperous, and sustainable

world. Within two months, thousands of people from all over the world will again come together thanks to the uniting power of music.” The Secretary General is convinced that it’s our youth who will have to lead the way to dignity for all. “Today’s youngsters grow up in a world full of change. Tomorrowland demonstrates that it is possible to live and experience a weekend together, with tens of thousands of people, in a peaceful way and with respect for each other. 210,000 messages from every corner of the globe can be found on the One World bridge and we are very happy that now, our message can also be a part of this project.”

“The unveiling of the installation is a new milestone in the history of the festival. The panel in Ban Ki-moon’s name will be soon be placed in the middle of the bridge,” Manu Beers says. “When we started organizing Tomorrowland in 2005, we never could have dreamed to achieve what we have,” his brother Michiel continues. “We dreamed of the creation of a fairytale world. Now the festival has become something like a mini-UN, or maybe an edition of the Olympic Games where

everyone wins a gold medal. It’s surreal to see all those people show up to Boom now.”According to the brothers, the One World bridge, which was built to commemorate the festival’s tenth anniversary last year, is meant to symbolize the Tomorrowland and TomorrowWorld generation. “It’s a strong and positive signal,” Michiel Beers thinks. “The most outstanding thing about the festivals is, after all, the people themselves.”

With a ceremony in the festival’s signature style, the panel with the UN’s message was unveiled. “A little angel’s come down from heaven!” Ban Ki-moon can only barely suppress a jump of joy when a Tomorrowland fairy shows up to do the honors. “I think this is the best he’s amused himself during any assignment over the past few years,” one of his employees can be heard saying towards the end of the proceedings.

And so it seems no one – not even the most important men in the world – are left untouched by the magic of Tomorrow.

UNITED NATIONS AND TOMORROWLAND JOIN HANDS IN PUSH FOR UNITY

Tomorrowland is the first music festival in the world that’s managed to appear on the United Nations’ radar. At the end of May, Ban Ki-moon paid Belgium a visit in honor of the event. “Let’s work as one towards dignity for all” – that’s the message UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has had inscribed into the One World bridge, the art installation that Arne Quinze built at De Schorre, Belgium. The bridge panel containing the message was unveiled in Brussels in May, in the presence of the Secretary General himself as well as Manu and Michiel Beers, the two brothers who

Recipe 1: Badass BurgerNothing better than a delicious, juicy burger to sink your teeth into. With these quick tips and ingredients you can upgrade your standard burger to one of the badass variants that are sure to amaze everyone who manages to grab a bite.Guacamole. Forget ketchup and mayonnaise and surprise yourself with a big scoop of the green gold. Be sure to spice your guacamole with some jalapeño peppers to really make it pop. Chorizo. A burger with meat on top of meat, isn’t that sweet? Cover your burger in a couple slices of chorizo to give it more bite and richer flavors. It doesn’t add any difficulty to the grilling, either. Just put the chorizo on your burger when it’s almost finished and enjoy!Nachos. Who doesn’t love nachos? Tell you what: they’re even more delicious on top of a burger. Top your burger with crushed nacho chips, cheese sauce, jalapeños and salsa. Close your eyes and enjoy the crispy bite.

Recipe 2: Banana BoatA good barbecue needs a dessert. This extremely easy and delicious recipe has three important things. Vitamins from the bananas, and marshmallows and chocolate because they’re delicious. • Cut each banana lengthwise but not all the way through.• Leave the skin on (do not peel).• Put 1-2 tsp each of marshmallows and chocolate chips in the slit.• Sprinkle lightly with brown sugar.• Wrap tightly in foil, making sure to seal the ends.• Place the whole on grill, over campfire or coals, slit side up.• After about 7 minutes, your banana boat is done!

A CHAIR FIT FOR A KINGThe official DreamVille chairs keep you safe from the unknown critters in the grass. They’re only $20, lightweight and easy to take along on all your adventures. Sit in style, get your own!

PITCH IT PROPERLYEven though the nights are long at TomorrowWorld, you won’t rest easily before you’ve set up your tent. Here are tips on how to pitch your canvas palace and handle other DreamVille matters, so that every time you crawl into your sleeping bag it feels just like home.

Set up your tent immediately! Don’t wait, because soon you’ll be high in the sky enjoying everything TomorrowWorld has to offer, and pitching a tent is a lot harder with your head in the clouds.

Bring flags, inflatable swimming pools, sombreros, party tents and other attributes to build the most gorgeous little village within all of DreamVille.

Be safe, and lock your castle with padlocks. This keeps out the evil elves who sometimes roam around the area, looking for valuables to take. In addition, store your most precious belongings in a locker.

Don’t ride solo. Create a camp with friends, strangers and others who wander around looking for companionship. Share the love!

Bring earplugs – when you yourself want to get some rest.

Be prepared for a water fight. When everyone is hot and sweaty, there’s no better relief possible than that.

Waking up is probably one of the most well-known internationally shared struggles. Whether it is because you partied a little too hard the night before, whether you were right in the middle of dreaming about your devilishly handsome neighbor or whether you just really, really love your bed; we know it’s not easy.

So what does a perfect morning consist of? It all starts with sleeping soundly, preferably snuggled up with someone worth dreaming of as well as waking up next to. Then, as you roll over, a single good morning kiss is enough to signal your tent buddy to venture out and fetch you coffee.

You will need the caffeine to kickstart the day. The sun is shining, so after a shower, you dress up in your summer’s best and get your shine on. You greet your neighbors, who were kind enough to bring you a croissant from the bakery. You chat for a while before you open up the TomorrowWorld Today and decide on the acts you want to see today. Oh yes, life is good.

Does this all sound too good to be true? Let’s face it; you’re now waking up on DreamVille grounds, which means a community of music, food, beautiful people and summer loving awaits. Now waking up doesn’t sound like such bad idea anymore, does it?

You’re hosting the Full On stage at TomorrowWorld. How did the collaboration start and how do you keep it interesting year after year?“After I played on the Tomorrowland Main Stage for the first time in 2005, I often returned on different stages. In 2013 I got the offer for my own stage. I think the Full On concept fits perfectly at Tomorrowland and TomorrowWorld, since it combines a lot of different genres, just like the festival as a whole. This way I keep it exciting. And to keep it really surprising, I do a back-to-back set with each of my DJs.”

Can you explain to us what the philosophy behind Full On is? Why the b2b sets, how do you pick your colleagues?“The idea for Full On came to me in 2007. I wanted to do something else than the usual long solo set or a lot of separate DJs. Together with my team we thought of the idea of doing b2b sets with different performers. The idea was to create a melting pot of genres. The result is really unique when I play together with someone who does house or ‘EDM.’ They have to move towards my music a little bit, and I have to move a little bit towards their music. This creates a really cool vibe of different styles. And the dynamic atmosphere between the DJs is something the crowd takes over.”

What can you tell about you Hello World EP series? Why multiple EPs and no album? And why the title – does it symbolize a rebirth?“The Hello World EPs are born from the idea to do everything just a little bit differently. So instead of busting

my ass off for an entire year to make an album, I chose to release a new EP three times a year, with four to six new tracks and mixes. My fans get a lot of Ferry Corsten music every four or five months, instead of once a year. So this way they don’t have to wait such a long time for the next load of music. Besides that, there’s a lot of diversity in my productions. Trance is the biggest chunk, of course, but once in a while I really enjoy taking a sidestep to electro or house. Nowadays, a lot of people label my single ‘Punk’ as a trance record, but in my opinion it’s a 100% electro record and that’s the way it was meant to be when I released it. Basically, the EPs show multiple sides of me, and that’s exactly what I wanted. The EPs say, ‘Hello world, this is Ferry Corsten!’” How does your creative process work when you make these tracks, are you the quick ‘n dirty type or a perfectionist? Where do you get your inspiration and energy?“That differs for every track. On my new EP there’s a track called ‘Homeward’, which is based on the feeling I have when I return home after I’ve been travelling for a long time, when I get to see my family again. On the other hand, for ‘Reborn’ I just felt like making a festival hit and it’s exactly with that mindset that I dove into the studio. Sometimes an idea comes to me in the studio, other times it’s on a plane or while I’m performing. The first 90% of a track are usually finished pretty fast. Then I can test it in clubs, but the last 10% usually takes a lot more time. Sometimes I’m lucky and it’s finished in a week or two, but

there are times when it takes a lot longer. In that way you could definitely say that I’m a perfectionist.”

What do you think of the trance scene in the contemporary ‘EDM’ world? How do you think the scene will develop in the next few years?“The dance world is always spinning around. At the beginning, house was very popular, then (happy) hardcore became popular and after that trance was very big. For the past couple of years ‘bigroom’ has been incredibly popular and now we’re going back to house, while you can feel that trance is making a comeback as well. The younger festival attendants, especially in the USA, are discovering that there’s more than bigroom and constant climaxes. They’re starting to appreciate nice melodies as well. So, undoubtedly, trance will become the biggest thing in dance again. And after trance, another thing will take over just like it did in the past. I really hope, actually, that all genre distinctions will disappear and that the people who stick to one genre realize that every genre has its own charms. I can personally really enjoy good indie or deep house, even though I will hardly ever play that stuff out. But that’s because it doesn’t fit my style, not because I don’t like it.”

A simple question; DJ’ing or producing – and why?“That’s actually a really hard question! I have to choose producing. After my DJ career I want to go into the studio fulltime and help young DJ talents, but bands as well.”

Born to a Filipino father and Puerto Rican mother, Crespo was raised on the North Side of Chicago with the perfect blend of the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Otis Redding, salsa and merengue. Upon moving to Miami in the late 90s, Crespo’s love for music grew as he was exposed to all new sounds, including Miami Bass, Reggae and Southern Hip Hop. Each summer, Crespo would return to Chicago, not only his birthplace, but the birthplace of house music, igniting his love for electronic music. By the age of 26, Crespo has rocked alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, including Diplo, Steve Aoki, Tiesto and Avicii, as well as multiple performances as an opening act for Wiz Khalifa. Crespo’s style aims to blend the lines between ALL genres, sending his audience on a journey through the music that has shaped him.

“Don’t think being a resident of TomorrowWorld makes the job any easier. On the contrary, I’d say it takes twice the energy and devotion to make everybody happy. Just because you’re part of the feeling doesn’t mean that you’ll be loved by everyone automatically.” But what more can you do, than just do your best? “Bring the biggest weapons in your record box. Give it your all. When standing in front of a sea of people, you’re in the spotlight. There can be no hesitation. There can be no doubt. There’s no place to hide, no time to be shy. Try to surpass your own abilities time and time again. After that, it’s out of your hands. After that, it’s up to the people.”

It may sound like a gamble if you talk about it like that, but the rise of Yves has proven that chance isn’t a factor at all. Hard work pays off, as shown by Yves successfully hosting his own stage at Tomorrowland each year, V-Sessions. “It’s more than amazing to host your own stage. From the get go it has been a huge success, growing bigger year after year. I personally enjoy it the most because it enables me to bring the big names, like Eric Prydz. To give them a proper welcome to the world of Tomorrow.” What’s left to achieve? “Closing the

main stage would be my next goal, if anything.”

Being so busy with touring around the world, how does one still make time to produce the tunes to play? “It’s definitely not easy! While touring, I mostly try to focus on my mashups, radio shows and may be laying out the fundamentals for new tracks. But it’s at home where I really dive into those ideas. It takes quite some effort to get enough free time to lock myself up in the studio sometimes.” Talking about the studio, anything new coming up? “At this moment, I’m kind of trying to look for a different sound. Experimenting, to keep things fresh. But in essence it’ll always have that catchy tune and that enormous amount of energy that always sweeps the crowd off its feet. I just finished a new solo track and there are a bunch of collabs in the making, with Quintino for example.”

The studio isn’t the only place where new and fresh stuff ’s happening for Yves. “I’ve already been part of so many great adventures, wonderful festivals and shows. But the road doesn’t end here, no sir. Out of all the great things to come I’m really stoked to play Sensation Dubai in

October. From what I’ve seen and heard, that’s going to be next level.” What’s his vision on the future of EDM? Things are happening fast, the music is expanding all over the globe. “To be honest, I try not to think about stuff like that too hard. All I do is try to keep up with the evolution of our music. See where it’s going and try to adjust in time. Music is a feeling, only parts of it you can predict. The rest you just got to take in as it comes, to keep the creativity flowing.”

He’ll be playing not once, not twice but three times at The Gathering, the main stage and at the Smash the House area. “How I’m gearing up for this weekend? Search new tunes, complete my set with some nice mashups and of course, get plenty of rest before the madness kicks in.” So prepare yourself for a monster set, given to you by the personification of TomorrowWorld. As seasoned as he is a talented musician, the Toronto-based producer & songwriter, Shaun Frank, puts quality music above all else. “My focus has always been writing memorable melodies, timeless lyrics and putting as much energy and passion as I can behind the production,” he says outlining his artistic intentions. Beginning his music career at the age of 14, Shaun Frank front-manned his previous bands, toured the world over, and in the past year he finds himself transitioning fully into the world of Electronic Dance Music. It was one single in particular that put Frank on the map - the collaboration “This Could Be Love” with Borgeous featuring Delaney Jane. Released at the end of 2014 on Spinnin’ Records, “This Could Be Love” held its position in Beatport’s Top 10 chart for over two months and received airplay on dance music radio stations across the globe. Shaun is not solely concerned with making music that sells, but songs that cut to the soul.

LAIDBACK LUKE

Luke, you’ve been with us for years now; you already played back when Tomorrowland was still pretty low-key. What do you remember of those first few times? “I can very well remember the times when Tomorrowland was still the cute little niece of Mysteryland, where I’d already was a regular face on the stage. They asked me if I also wanted to play at Tomorrowland, which I did. It only had a few stages back then, but just look at it right now! I still can’t believe it when driving into Boom, to be very honest. Who would expect the most infamous festival ever is happening here? In that little sleepy but charming town? I sure as hell never did, but I’m very glad it happened. And I’m more than happy to have the opportunity to be a part of it, of course, because the festival is still very special for me. Like I already told my family and friends, this weekend is ‘the big one,’ and for me it really feels like that. I do over a 150 shows every year – including some really big festivals – but Tomorrowland and TomorrowWorld will always be that special one for me.”

Nowadays you are not only performing there yourself; you bring a whole gang of superheroes to support you at your own stage. The Super You&Me concept has become infamous all over the globe in the recent years. It comes as no surprise that it’s been given a place at Tomorrowland. But what is the experience like for you?“Hosting a stage on this festival is just bizarre; every time again it feels like a dream coming true. I’ve been doing this concept for a while now, but I’m still extremely grateful that it’s possible and that I get this opportunity. It’s amazing.” But it’s also an amazing experience for the visitors. Seeing your favorite artist transform into a full-fledged superhero on stage is takes the overall atmosphere of the gig to a whole new level. Luke puts in a lot of effort to give his fans the best possible experience all the time. “Do I have to put in more effort to arrange this particular hosting? That may be true, but you’re not working when you’re having fun right? It doesn’t feel like more work to me. I’m wearing a custom-made superhero outfit, and we always include an

extra special show element to the superhero set. Add to that the fact that millions of people are watching our set on the livestream, so I can’t play the same records as last week... Yes, it’s always more work to prepare this gig. But I do it with the utmost pleasure!”

The suits that superhero Laidback Luke wears are extremely impressive. We’ve heard that those who think that you buy them in just any random costume shop are dead wrong. What’s the story? “Years ago we did a superhero costume contest together with Marvel. Stan Lee, the brain behind most of the famous Marvel comics, together with Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, was a member of the jury of the contest. The ultimate goal was to design a brand new costume for me! We had over a hundred designs, many of which I have thankfully used over the past few years. Last time at Tomorrowland in Belgium, I was wearing a costume design by one of the runner-ups actually!”

Laidback Luke. A name that should ring a large variety of bells and whistles with anyone whose heart beats for house. Founder of Mixmash Records, genius behind the turntable and part-time superhero, that’s Luke for you. Luke is the brain behind Super You&Me.
