“Top of the morning to you all, my fellow campers!” Bernardo shouts to his DreamVille neighbors. He isn’t just ready, he was born ready. What’s more: he actually just puts on some pants and sunglasses and starts walking towards the festival when his friend Levi stops him: “Wait! Where are you going?” Levi asks. “I’m off to party,” Bernardo says, “it’s the last day of Tomorrowland Brasil and I am determined to enjoy and live every second of it. Repow is already opening the Mainstage at noon – wouldn’t wanna miss that!” “But shouldn’t we get breakfast first?” Levi replies, craving a freshly baked ciabatta accompanied by a strawberry smoothie. But Bernardo doesn’t want to hear it: “We don’t have time for breakfast! Just follow my lead and live on love, feed on rave and absorb the beats through your pores!” Luckily for Levi the way to the festival is paved with all kinds of delicacies.

“Bom dia a todos, amigos campistas!” Bernardo grita aos seus vizinhos no DreamVille. Ele não só está pronto - ele nasceu pronto. GABRIEL DIRIGIU POR DIAS DE RONDÔNIA, NA REGIÃO AMAZÔNICA, ATÉ O TOMORROWLAND, PARA REALIZAR O SONHO DE TER UMA FESTA

MÁGICA NO SEU ANIVERSÁRIO DE 18 ANOS!

A 3000km-long road trip. From the Amazon to São Paulo, the equivalent of traveling from Brussels to Athens in Europe, from Atlanta to Las Vegas in the United States. That was Gabriel’s saga from Porto Velho to Tomorrowland Brasil – the realization of a dream of a lifetime. “My parents made me a savings account as soon as I was born that I was allowed to access when I turned 18. I cashed it in now to try to get into medical school in São Paulo, but, before that, go to Tomorrowland!” Gabriel’s journey took two full days and 15 hours, taking turns on the wheel with his dad – each one would drive 500km while the other got some sleep. As soon as David Guetta announced that there would be a Tomorrowland in Brazil during the 2014 edition in Belgium, Gabriel already knew that this was a crazy thing to do with the money that was so thoughtfully saved for so long. “I’ve been keeping up with Tomorrowland for years. I’ve seen real time broadcasts, the stages and the most magnanimous moments with the sets of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike”. Gabriel departed alone from the hotel to the festival, where he’ll meet up with an entourage of 40 visitors from Rondônia who rented a bus so as to also cross great distances and hit the Mainstage. In fact, the main and magical stage was one of the young man’s greatest expectations. Upon finding out that the festival’s theme in Brasil would be The Book of Wisdom, his eyes sparkled and he yelled: “Seriously?!!! Yeah!” Never has a person’s savings been so well spent.

3.000km de estrada. Da planície amazônica para São Paulo, uma distância equivalente na Europa entre Bruxelas e Atenas; nos EUA, entre Atlanta e Las Vegas. Essa foi a saga de Gabriel de Porto Velho (Rondônia) Tomorrowland Brasil, a realização do sonho de toda uma vida. “Meus pais criaram uma poupança pra mim assim que nasci, para eu gastar como quisesse quando fizesse 18 anos. Usei esse dinheiro agora para vir tentar estudar medicina em SP, mas antes para curtir o Tomorrowland!”. A jornada de Gabriel foi enfrentada em 2 dias e 15 horas, revezando o volante do carro com seu pai – cada um dirigia 500km enquanto o outro dormia. Assim que David Guetta anunciou na festa belga de 2014 que haveria uma edição no Brasil, Gabriel soube que essa seria a loucura a ser feita com o dinheiro guardado com carinho por seus pais por tanto tempo. “Faz anos que eu acompanho o Tomorrowland, já vi as transmissões em tempo real, os palcos e os momentos nobres com o set do Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike”. Gabriel embarcou sozinho do hotel para o festival, onde encontrou uma caravana de 40 rondonienses que alugaram um ônibus para também cruzar longas distâncias até o MainStage. O grande e mágico palco, aliás, era uma das grandes expectativas do rapaz. Ao saber que no Brasil a festa principal seria no cenário The Book of Wisdom, que ele tanto via nos streamings, ele brilhou os olhos e gritou: “Sério?? Yeah!”. Nunca uma poupança foi tão bem gasta!

DJs aren’t the only stars at Tomorrowland Brasil. Hidden between the Oriental Stage and The Pool by Mastercard, you’ll find the Gourmet Experience, a beautiful restaurant adorned with several trees, welcoming the presence of illustrious chefs such as Vinicius Rojo (Brazilian) and Sergio Herman (Dutch). Similar to how a DJ mixes several different tracks, they came to the festival focused on mixing the flavors of their homelands. “I brought Belgian chocolates, which I used to make a delicate mousse with blueberries and yogurt. In terms of Brazil, I created an açaí vinaigrette with passion fruit and vanilla oil.” Rojo created the main dishes, including ribs with Belgian beer and bananas, while Herman was responsible for desserts and the curious vinaigrette.

Sergio is incredibly awarded, holder of three stars in the Belgian Michelin Guide, earned in the kitchen of restaurant Oud Sluis, which remained open until 2013 in the Netherlands. It was there that he stood out due to his close attention to detail when it came to ingredients and flavors. Today, he runs two other kitchens - each already a bearer of one Michelin star - where he keeps on cooking. Taking special note of flavors is one of his main characteristics. “My food is extremely mixed and detail-oriented. At my restaurant in Antwerp, we have an eclectic way of cooking, blending several ingredients and always remembering where we came from, as well as a passion for acidity.” His restaurants also host events and gatherings focused on design, music and fashion.

Escondido entre o Oriental Stage e a The Pool by MasterCard está o Gourmet Experience, um lindo restaurante adornado por árvores e que está recebendo a presença dos ilustres chefs Vinicius Rojo, brasileiro, e o holandes Sergio Herman. Assim como um DJ junta várias músicas diferentes, eles vieram ao festival empenhados em mixar os sabores dos lugares relacionadas a eles. “Trouxe chocolates belgas, que usei para fazer um delicado mousse com blueberries e iogurte. Sobre o Brasil, bolei um vinagrete de açaí com maracujá e óleo de baunilha”. Rojo criou os pratos principais, entre eles uma costela com cerveja belga e banana, enquanto Hermann foi responsável pela sobremesa e pelo curioso vinagrete.

Sergio é super premiado, detentor de três estrelas do cobiçado Guia Michelin belga, conquistados no fogão do restaurante Oud Sluis, que serviu mesas até 2013 na Holanda. Foi lá que ele se destacou pela sua minúcia acerca de ingredientes e sabor. Hoje ele comanda outra duas casas, já cotadas cada uma com uma estrela no Guia Michelin, onde segue cozinhando tendo o esmero pelos sabores como uma de suas grandes características. “Minha comida é mesmo muito focada nos detalhes e misturas. Em meu restaurante na Antuérpia temos uma maneira eclética de cozinhar, com muitas mesclas de ingredientes, sempre com uma lembrança de onde nós viemos e uma paixão pela acidez”. Qual é o segredo para se manter no topo por tanto tempo?

“Se houvesse um segredo eu contaria (risos)! Primeiro, estou cercado por pessoas talentosas. Você me vê sozinho como DJ, mas tenho um grande time formado por empresas muito competentes. Além disso você precisa trabalhar duro: se quer se manter relevante é preciso lançar muitos singles e também ficar ligado nas inovações. Acima de tudo, você também precisa apostar: se ficar sempre na sua zona de conforto, você fica pra trás. Sair desta zona te faz evoluir como um ser humano.”

Vi em um vídeo que você tocou no Tomorrowland logo depois que seu filho nasceu. Como é lidar com a distância da família o tempo todo?

“Não vou mentir: é muito difícil. Perco momentos importantes do crescimento dos meus filhos e isso me machuca muito. Minha filha tem um senso de humor sensacional, com apenas 3 anos e meio. Mas eu tenho duas paixões: uma é minha família e a outra é minha música e é necessário encontrar um equilíbrio entre elas. Tudo na vida é questão de equilíbrio! É difícil agradar a todos.”

Apesar do sucesso e de fazer o que você ama, com o que ainda é difícil lidar?

“Pra mim, é muito difícil lidar com críticas, especialmente em redes sociais. Porque lá, as pessoas não te criticam cara a cara, elas detonam mesmo, só pelo prazer. Você faz música com amor e tenta agradar a todos, então isso machuca. E jet-lags também são difíceis! Mas não tenho do que reclamar: tenho o melhor trabalho do mundo. Sou um cara de sorte!”

E que dica você daria pra um DJ como eu, que vai tocar pela primeira vez no Tomorrowland da Bélgica? O que esperar?

“É a final do superbowl! Sem querer te deixar nervoso, mas é! Só um conselho que eu te dou: não mude o seu som por ninguém. As pessoas contratam você para ouvir o “seu” som. Já cometi este erro uma vez, por isso digo com propriedade. Hoje eu amo tocar para públicos gigantes, mas imagino que na sua primeira vez você fique nervoso. Não fique: antes que você perceba já acabou e você estará no carro, indo embora, e tudo que restará são grandes lembranças.”

Tell us, what is the secret to keep on top for so long?

“If there was a secret I would tell you! First, I’m surrounded by talented people. You just see me DJing, but I have a great team made of very competent companies. Besides, you must work hard: if you wanna keep relevant, you must release a lot of singles and also be in touch with innovation. Above all, you must bet: if you maintain yourself in your comfort zone, you’ll stay behind. Leaving this zone makes you evolve as a human being.”

There is a video of you spinning at Tomorrowland days after your son was born. How is dealing with distance from family all the time?

“I’m not gonna lie: is very hard. I lose important moments of my children’s growth and it hurts a lot. My daughter has this amazing sense of humor, with only 3 and a half years. I have two passions: my family and my music, so I must reach a balance between them. Life is all about balance! Is hard to please everybody.”

You have fame and work with what you love. What daily struggles are left?

“For me is still hard to deal with critics, especially on social media. People won’t say what they post on social media in front of you, they just bash you for the pleasure of it. You make music and love and try to please everybody, so it hurts. And also the jet lags, they are hard! But I can’t complain: I have the best job in the world. I’m a lucky guy.”

What advice can you give to DJs like me, that will play at Belgium’s Tomorrowland for the first time? What waits for me?

“It is the Superbowl final! I don’t mean to make you anxious, but it is! Just a bit of advice: don’t change your music because of anybody. People hire you to listen to your sound. I’ve made this mistake once; therefore, I can talk about properly. Today I love to play for giant audiences, but I imagine that in your first time you will really go crazy. Don’t feel like that: before you notice, it’s over and you’ll be in your car going home, and all that will be left are the memories.”

PERFORMANCES, HOTELS, STUDIO, TRIPS: SPENDING SO MUCH TIME TOGETHER IS CERTAINLY A CHALLENGE FOR THE TWO OF YOU. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THIS EXCESSIVE COEXISTENCE? “We have a very natural affinity, after all, we were best friends before becoming a duo. The truth is that we have a great synergy – we always want the best for each other. We can tell when the other isn’t doing very well and we know when to keep the necessary distance. Even when we have small arguments, everything is okay half an hour later!”

AND WHAT’S EASIER: PLAYING OR PRODUCING TOGETHER IN THE STUDIO? “In the booth, as DJs, even if we played with our eyes shut the sets would still work perfectly, because it’s something that comes very naturally to us. In the studio, it’s a different story; I (Sunnery) am more attentive to detail and focus on parts of the work that Ryan wouldn’t necessarily pay too much attention to. But he always makes observations that significantly perfect the tracks’ final result. At the end of the day, this is also positive because we complement each other. The studio demands a lot from us and as a duo, things become a little easier.”

WHICH OTHER DUOS DO YOU ADMIRE AND RESPECT? “W&W is a duo that we admire a lot. They create a very different type of work from ours, but their level of dedication is inspiring. Dimitri and Mike are also a great example: the way that believe in their work and their professional posture is fantastic.”

APRESENTAÇÕES, HOTÉIS, ESTÚDIO, VIAGENS: PASSAR TANTO TEMPO JUNTO CERTAMENTE É UM DESAFIO PARA VOCÊS. COMO VOCÊS LIDAM COM O EXCESSO DE CONVIVÊNCIA?“Nós temos uma afinidade muito natural, afinal somos melhores amigos antes de virarmos uma dupla de artistas. A verdade é que temos uma grande sintonia, queremos sempre o melhor um para o outro. Identificamos quando o outro não está muito bem e sabemos quando manter a distância necessária. Mesmo quando discutimos ou temos pequenas brigas, meia hora depois já está tudo bem de novo!”

E O QUE É MAIS FÁCIL: TOCAR JUNTOS OU PRODUZIR AS MÚSICAS EM DOIS NO ESTÚDIO?“Na cabine, como DJs, mesmo se tocássemos de olhos fechados os sets funcionariam perfeitamente, porque é algo muito natural pra nós. Já no estúdio é uma situação diferente, eu (Sunnery) sou mais detalhista e foco em partes do trabalho que Ryan não atentaria, enquanto ele sempre tem observações que aperfeiçoam muito o resultado final das músicas. No final das contas isso também é positivo porque um complementa o outro. O estúdio exige muito de nós e em dois as coisas ficam ainda mais fáceis.”

QUAIS OUTRAS DUPLAS VOCÊS ADMIRAM E RESPEITAM?“W&W é uma dupla que admiramos muito. Eles fazem um trabalho muito diferente do nosso, mas a dedicação deles é muito inspiradora. Dimitri e Mike também são um grande exemplo: o modo como eles acreditam nos seus trabalhos, a postura profissional deles é fantástica.”

IN SPITE OF BEING BROTHERS, THE ROUTINE OF PERFORMANCES, HOTELS, STUDIO AND TRIPS TOGETHER CAN BE QUITE STRESSFUL. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE EXCESSIVE INTERACTION AND BOTH THE PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL ANGLES? “We each had our own careers playing by ourselves and when we began playing together it was a challenging transition. But everything worked out and today we do everything together: we’re always playing, we live together, our girlfriends as well – so it’s such an intense relationship that it’s impossible for us to separate the personal and professional angles: it’s one single thing.”

AND WHAT’S EASIER: PLAYING OR PRODUCING TOGETHER IN THE STUDIO? “Playing, no doubt about it. On the stage, there’s a very strong feeling of communion between us – a mutual trust relationship that allows things to flow very well. In terms of the studio, we decided to produce tracks individually – we work separately so that our creative processes flow in the best way possible. We have exclusive styles and after producing on our own, we finalize the work together and the result is truly unique.”

WHICH OTHER DUOS DO YOU ADMIRE AND RESPECT?“DVBBS reminds us a lot of ourselves when we were young. Similar to us, they are also Greek, so we feel like they are sort of our younger brothers. W&W as well: in additional to sensational producers, they also are our close friends – we have a lot of fun together. And of course, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano: they have an energy that’s very similar to ours and an entirely different sound – they are incredibly talented!”

Mas deu tudo certo e hoje fazemos tudo juntos: estamos sempre tocando, moramos juntos, nossas namoradas também, então é uma relação tão intensa que é impossível haver separação entre pessoal e profissional: é uma coisa só.”

E O QUE É MAIS FÁCIL: TOCAR JUNTOS OU PRODUZIR AS MÚSICAS EM DOIS NO ESTÚDIO?“Tocar, sem dúvidas. Nos palcos há um sentimento de união muito forte entre nós, uma relação de confiança mútua que faz com que as coisa fluam muito bem. Em relação aos estúdios nós tomamos a decisão de produzir músicas individualmente: cada um de nós faz seus trabalhos em separado, para que nossos processos criativos fluam da melhor maneira. Temos estilos próprios e depois de produzirmos sozinhos finalizamos os trabalhos juntos, e o resultado fica realmente único.”

QUAIS OUTRAS DUPLAS VOCÊS ADMIRAM E RESPEITAM?“O DVBBS nos lembra muito nós mesmos quando éramos mais jovens. Assim como nós eles também são gregos, então temos eles como uma espécie de irmãos mais novos. W&W também: além de produtores sensacionais eles são nossos amigos próximos, nos divertimos muito juntos. E é claro que Sunnery James e Ryan Marciano: eles têm uma energia muito parecida com a nossa e um som completamente diferente, são muitos talentosos! ”

A look at the electronic dance music landscape wouldn’t be complete without shining a spotlight on Yves V, who is an integral part of Tomorrowland. The passion and enthusiasm that radiates from every performance has allowed Yves V to earn global recognition, acclaim and praise. Belgian-born and bred, Yves van Geerston - better known as Yves V - is considered a staple in the DJ world by fans and peers with his music often making its way onto the playlists of the biggest DJs on the planet, from Tiësto to Steve Angello to Hardwell and more.

With several successful tours that have taken him all over the globe, Yves V has gained a cult following that spans regions, countries and continents. In addition to his residencies at Tomorrowland and TomorrowWorld, he’s illuminated the mainstages of the world’s most iconic clubs and events, including Sensation, Mysteryland and David Guetta in Concert.

While Yves V has been on the scene since 2009, it was his remix of “Insane Pressure” that brought him into the limelight. The Belgian producer then went from underground bangers to Beatport Top 10 hits. “Madagascar” featuring Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike and Angger Dimas and “CloudBreaker,” a collaboration with Belgian producer Basto, sent Yves V into the dance music stratosphere. “CloudBreaker” even found its way onto the Dutch Single Top 100 and the Flemish Ultratop 50, while also charting in The Netherlands and France. When Yves V teamed up with Paul Aiden in 2013, they released the single “Sonica (Running On A Highway)” which landed on the Ultratip Belgian charts.

Yves V’s own productions have been released with the industry’s best labels including Armada and Dirty Dutch while gaining the support from tier 1 artists including David Guetta, Martin Garrix and Armin van Buuren, among others.

A drone, in musical lingo, is a long or continuously repeated single note, or what we call the hypnotic effect. The Drone Lovers project came to life as the product of the love that Davis Genuino and Pedro Zopelar share for music. The project incorporates the two DJ-producers of the house music scene in Brazil, along with singer-songwriter Erica Alves. The band’s inspirations stem from The Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Brian Eno and Sonic Youth, among many others.

“Drone” foi o termo dado aos estudiosos de música para classificar sons contínuos de longa sustentação, notas repetidas ou o que simplesmente chamamos de efeitos hipnóticos. O projeto The Drone Lovers nasceu do amor pela música compartilhado por Davis Genuino e Pedro Zopelar, dois produtores e DJs da cena house do Brasil, junto com a cantora e compositora Erica Alves. As inspirações da banda vieram de Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Sonic Youth entre outros.

Pagani rides the waves of Brazilian dance music and is a famous name behind the microphone and selections of VIBE 97, a segment of the Energia 97FM radio station in São Paulo. Resident of the crowd-pleaser nightclub Sirena in Maresias (SP) and a popular figure at EDM festivals across Brazil, the DJ-producer is also expected to play big-room house music at Tomorrowland Brasil, including tracks that blend explosive pop with trance melodies.

Belgian DJ-producer who knows everything there is to know about Tomorrowland, having played in five editions of the party’s original version in Belgium. Mystique’s sound revolves around funky and house music with a good amount of samples and direct or indirect references to North American songs. The artist’s versatility led to releases by both Spinnin’ Records, the most EDM-oriented Dutch label, and Mad Decent, Diplo’s global booty music stronghold.

Ummet is a Turkish DJ and producer who managed to become a valuable asset of the widely successful Dutch talent harvest due to tracks that feature in sets played by Sander van Doorn, Tiësto and Armin van Buuren. Ummet came to light through techno, but has been pushing boundaries and invading the EDM scene with hits like “Raise Your Hands”, which, as the name suggests, will get the crowds on their feet at Tomorrowland Brasil. Another major hit that got millions of plays on the web is called “Revolution”, a collaboration with the likes of R3hab and Nervo.

One of the culminating moments of Tomorrowland Brasil will be when Nicky Romero drops the hit “Toulouse” on the Mainstage late Sunday. With hundreds of thousands of plays on YouTube and countless appearances on top charts and DJ sets, this track exemplifies the sharp and renowned force of the young producer-DJ of Dutch origin. But that’s not his only hit. “I Could Be the One”, produced collaboratively with Avicii, represents another track that will likely make all hell break loose during the festival and ultimately prove the constant rumors about town: Nicky Romero is bound to become “the new Tiësto”.

LouLou Players used to be the Belgian duo that incorporated Kolombo and Jérôme Denis, revealed to the world by Sharam (Deep Dish). Kolombo left the collaboration to seek worldwide fame, therefore the act is currently composed of Jérôme alone. Nonetheless, Belgians continue to follow the remaining member who now heads the label LOULOU Rec., releases music by incredible European producers, such as Oliver Klein, and does thorough research complemented by amazing LouLou podcasts. Jérôme’s house music and other sound mixes appeal just as much to savvy electronic music listeners as to mainstream members who just want to dance. LouLou Players is a powerful name in Tomorrowland Brasil.

You’ve probably heard of the name Blasterjaxx, especially coupled with David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Laidback Luke, taking into account that this Dutch duo tends to remix songs by the main dance music stars in the world. It’s no coincidence that Tiësto recruited them to join his new label called Musical Freedom in 2013, ultimately jumpstarting the duo’s worldwide success. Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf have been climbing DJ Mag’s Top 100 charts year-on-year. In 2014, they leaped 58 positions and landed 13th place! Their performance at Tomorrowland Brasil coincides with the release of the bombshell single “Forever”, featuring vocals by Courtney Jenaé.
