IT’S MY PREROGATIVE…

GREETINGS! TODD EMMETT HERE. RAINMAKER, RULE BREAKER, FUNDRAISER, HELL RAISER, STRATEGIC THINKER & BEER DRINKER.

For the past 10 years I’ve brought home the proverbial bacon for a number of high–profile nonprofits, dishing out baller fundraising, advocacy & marketing strategies - all served up with creative, out-of-the-box sizzle. I’ve sold out a 2,000 seat gala by giving the Lincoln Memorial a fashion makeover, raised $500,000 in 3 hours for marriage equality by convincing 250 porn stars to live auction their celibacy, and inspired nearly 1 million women to make some noise for the world’s most hush-hush men’s health crisis by getting them in touch with their inner pop diva.

Ernest Hemingway once said, “People can take everything away from you. But they can never take away your truth. But the question is… Can you handle mine?” Oh wait, that wasn’t Ernest Hemingway, that was Britney Spears. My bad. (But let’s be honest. Hemingway lived in Key West, so he probably would’ve loved Britney Spears). Anyways, this is my truth - a.k.a. my resume and portfolio. In short…. It’s my prerogative. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy boys, beer and Britney Spears.

OOPS!I DID IT AGAIN…

Tie One On:CHERRY BLOSSOM

FESTIVAL

To build FOMO for the Festival’s annual Pink Tie Party and hint at the hipper, more happening direction we were taking with the classic event, I worked with city officials to get permission to use 3D image mapping to project a hot pink tie onto the Lincoln Memorial. For one night only, Honest Abe was looking even more like a rock star than usual.

F*ck Inequality:NYC PRIDE

As the marriage equality debate raged nationally, opponents had a nasty habit of making sexual orientation all about – well -sex. Not love. To prove a point, I threw a 3 hour, 3 city, live bachelor & bachelorette “auction” where 250 porn stars pledged prolonged periods of celibacy in return for donations & allowed attendees to bid on good old fashion dinner dates.

For All The Mighty Mighty Good Men:

ZERO

Although prostate cancer only affects men, data shows that most donors are women. ZERO had always taken a hyper masculine approach to marketing, so I launched a series of female-centric ads that included sexy slow mo shots of survivors played to Salt N Pepa’s What A Man & videos of their wives lip synching to En Vogue’s Never Gonna Get It, urging women to not “give it” until their man gets a prostate exam.

Page 13: Todd Emmett: The Greatest Hits Collection

Keep the Festival Blooming:

MACY’S

When Macy’s signed on as the Festival’s largest funder, both parties were looking for a creative way to create visibility. I had a number of life-size paper trees installed in various locations throughout DC, MD & VA. For every person who signed up for Macy’s mailing list onsite, an additional donation was made to the Festival & an origami blossom was added to that tree.

Over The Rainbow:NYC PRIDE

When PRIDE chose Paint the Town Ruby as its 40th

Anniversary theme, I launched ads featuring a drag Dorothy to help evoke the gaiety of the event. But to convey the gravitas of its history, I commissioned an artist to create a 10 block yellow brick road leading to Stonewall that read: This is why they marched. Why she marched. Why we march. So that no child will ever have to look to the sky and wonder why oh why can’t I?

Father’s Day Forwards: ZERO

You know those videos of pissed off cats and the random forwards your dad forwards you? We all do. So for Father’s Day, I launched the Pay Him Back/Pay It Forward campaign, which allowed family members to sign their dads up for a series of spamtastic emails. The emails would only stop once their dad signed an online agreement to schedule a prostate exam.

…. I played with your heart. Got lost in the game.

BLOOD, SWEAT& SPEARS…

In June of 2011, I stood in the wings of the NYC Pride Main Stage staring out at a sea of more than 17,000 blissful faces as the event’s headliner, Britney Spears, closed the celebration with a no-holds-barred performance of My Prerogative. I was the Executive Director of NYC Pride and was watching the proverbial sun set on our 42nd annual celebration. Albeit with a bang.

I was experiencing a career high. I had spoken at hundreds of press conferences and political rallies, managed thousands of staff, vendors and volunteers, raised over $4 million in corporate and individual donations, launched an international ad campaign in cooperation with New York City’s tourism commission, and ran five public events in the course of one week that collectively drew over 3.6 million attendees. All in all, I had successfully helmed the largest and most profitable Pride NYC had ever seen- effectively doubling the size and scope of the organization since starting three years earlier, and raising the event’s estimated economic impact to a staggering $240 million.

That night, at a VIP meet-and-greet with the one and only Ms. Spears, I collapsed. Correction. I collapsed onto a waiter, knocking me, him and approximately 20 glasses of champagne into the Swarovski crystal-encrusted lap of said pop princess. Hit me baby one more time? I think she would’ve pummeled me to a bloody pulp if given the chance.

Oh baby, baby, how was I supposed to know…. that just a few months later, that fateful night at Pride and the amazing life I was living at the time, would seem as long gone as Britney’s squeaky clean schoolgirl days. By August, I had become gravely ill, and instead of staring at rainbow flags and the happy faces of Pride revelers, I was staring at muted grey hospital curtains and the grim faces of doctors and nurses as they tried to figure out what was wrong with me.

Page 15: Todd Emmett: The Greatest Hits Collection

The Britney Spears incident (or “Spearscident” as it is officially referred to by those who know me) was merely a warning sign - a shot fired across the bow as my body went to war with itself. I spent two and a half years being diagnosed, treated and finally recovering from a life threatening autoimmune disorder.

Both physically and emotionally, those years were the most difficult I have ever experienced. But I didn’t want my illness to define me. That wasn’t my prerogative. So in the downtime between hospital stays and surgeries, I created my own nonprofit dedicated to adding some rock and roll to the process of charitable giving and launched the world’s 1st not-for-profit bar, Bar 501c3, as a popup in NYC’s Times Square.

But here I am now, happy and healthy and finally able to put the uncertainty of those days behind me. My doctors cleared me for “take off” and I’ve spent the last year working as a development consultant for ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer and the National Cherry Blossom Festival, while serving on the Young Professionals Council of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

But I realize that I miss the comradery of an office and the impactfulness inherent in making a long-term commitment to an organization and its mission. After a bit of a rough patch, Ms. Spears landed on top and found a permanent residency in Vegas. And that’s what I’m trying to do as well… Find a company to call home.
