ABOUT THE CLUB, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NEWS
Facilities: Caldicot Town Football Club is open to members 7 days a week and the
clubhouse is available to hire for any event by contacting our resident Bar Stewardess, Kerry
Rix. The club hosts two rooms with the main room catering for 100 people seated. Events
held at the club range from Birthday celebrations, Weddings, Christenings and Funerals. The
rooms are also available to hire for business or any organisations requiring an inexpensive,
reliable location. Catering, by pre-order, can be arranged and quoted for. We have a fully
licensed bar available to serve alcoholic beverages as well as tea and coffee. For more
Information please contact Kerry at the bar or click on the “Contact Me” button on the club
website: (www.caldicottownafc.com)
Volunteers Needed: Caldicot Town are always looking for volunteers to help out with match day preparation before and after a game (for example putting up nets to checking the playing area for rubbish). We also need volunteers to help maintain the facilities (painting and general maintenance). So, if you are able to provide assistance with maintenance tasks or donate materials please contact our maintenance manager, Chris Davidson on 07897353932.
Supporters Bus: CTAFC try to run a minibus to every Caldicot Town away game. We try to
ensure that supporters pay no more than £5 for any away trip, whether it’s just down the road
at Undy or a longer trip to Tata Steel (shorter trips help subsidise the longer ones). BUT, to
enable us to continue to run the minibus, we need as many supporters as possible to travel. If
not then we will have to start charging more for the longer trips. Tony Stephens puts up a list
of “regular” travellers a week before an away game (on the club noticeboard) so, if you are a
regular traveller, but do not wish to use the minibus, please can you cross your name off this
list ASAP! Anyone who is not a regular traveller, but would like to use the minibus can you
please add your name to the list no later than 2 days before an away game. Thank You
Request - Players and Supporters Minibus: We are looking for volunteers to drive either
the players or supporters minibus to our away games during the 2015/16 season. If you can
help in anyway please can you speak to Tony Stephens or Basil Packer.
Caldicot Leisure Centre Gym Membership Initiative: In conjunction with Caldicot Leisure
Centre and Monmouthshire Council, Caldicot Town are pleased to announce a fitness
initiative that will allow football club members reduced leisure centre Gym membership rates.
Please see the clubs website for more details.
Caldicot Town AFC Cycle Club: Caldicot Town has a ‘get fit’ initiative for its members. If you have a bike and feel that you would like to get fitter, or lose weight, then this is an ideal activity for you. Come and join the team every Sunday morning. Ask to speak to a committee member if interested or see the CTAFC Cycle Club section of the club website.
Match Day Programme: If you have any old photos or memory’s that you would like
reproduced or documented in the matchday programme please contact Kevin Buckthought at
the club. The editor would also welcome any ideas you may have to improve the programme.

Work behind the scenes: During the closed season we decided to concentrate our efforts
on the refurbishment of the lounge bar area, toilets and entrance porches to both the main
and lounge bars. We have partially completed this work but had to stop due to the roof
needing to be repaired. The roof has now been repaired (thanks to Ray Jerimiah) so we can
now complete the refurbishment. Special thanks to all who have assisted with the work
undertaken to date, we will soon be seeking more volunteers to complete the works
mentioned, so your assistance would be much appreciated. We have also put up hanging
baskets on the wall outside the front of the club, as well as painting various railings and drain
pipes. Our intentions are to paint the main stand early in the season; again your assistance in
helping with this task would be most welcome. You will also notice that we have new tables
and chairs in both the main and lounge bars; these were kindly supplied by Tesco.
Caldicot Town AFC Junior Section: Caldicot Town re-launched their junior football section
last season and are looking for players – boys and girls – in the under 11’s, under 12’s, under
14’s and under 16’s age-groups. Teams and managers are in place and the under-11’s and
under-14’s teams have started training on Friday evenings from 6.30-7.30pm. These junior
sides will complement the youth Welsh League 19’s team. All junior teams will play in the
East Gwent League. All coaches are fully qualified and CRB registered. Parents should
contact Gary Foster on 07812 583 099 for more information.
Sponsorship: If you would like to sponsor Caldicot Town AFC (e.g. match ball, kit
sponsorship, player sponsorship) then please contact Kevin Buckthought or Julian Williams,
at the club, for a list of sponsorship opportunities. Programme adverts cost £50 for half a
page or £100 for a whole page. Ball Sponsorship £60, for this you get a full seasons
membership of the club, a programme from the game which will include a dedication to you
and a half page advert in the programme (of your business) for the remainder of this season.
Caldicot Town AFC Women’s Team: After a few years absence, we welcome back a
Ladies team for the 2015/16 season; they have had some very encouraging results in their
pre-season friendlies so far. They will play in the South Wales Women & Girls League.

EDITORS NOTE: Today we welcome the players, management, committee members and supporters of Cwmbran Celtic to Jubilee Way for this Nathaniel Cars Sales Welsh League Division 2 fixture. So far this season Cwmbran Celtic have played five league games, winning four and losing one. They have scored thirteen goals and conceded seven. We are looking forward to a good competitive game played in a good spirit. Regardless of the result though, a warm welcome will be extended to all in the clubhouse after the game. Caldicot have been drawn away in the next round of both the FAW Cup and the Nathaniel League Cup. We will play away at RTB Ebbw Vale in the FAW and Caerau Ely in the League Cup (where we will renew acquaintances with our former captain David Biggs who transferred to Caerau Ely in the summer). Finally WELL DONE to RYAN MORLEY on reaching the final 3 in the Monsportsawards Young Sports

Cwmbran Celtic football club was formed in 1925. In the early years the club was known as CYMS (Catholic Young
Men's Society). After the immediate success of winning the Newport & District Division 2 Section A title in 1925/6
there was then a 25 year gap before the next trophy, the Premier Division title in 1950/1. The club disbanded in the
late 1950’s largely as a consequence of national service call-ups but a large influx of junior and youth players brought
about the re-forming of the club in 1964 under the new name of Cwmbran Catholics. In 1970/1 Celtic won the Gwent
Senior Cup. In 1972/3 with playing membership open to all denominations the club dropped the catholic title and re-
named as Cwmbran Celtic duly winning the Gwent Amateur Cup and finishing runners-up in the Gwent Premier
League. In 1979 the club bought its own premises at Oak Street, Old Cwmbran, the club's present headquarters. The
club's ground was in Cwmbran Park but around 1995 they moved to the grounds outside Cwmbran Stadium which
were shared with Cwmbran Cricket club. The cricket club later moved to Caerleon and Celtic obtained the lease from
Torfaen Council. Celtic played in the Gwent County League in the 1980s and 1990s and after gaining promotion as
champions of Division 2 in 1986/7 remained in the 1st division for the next 10 seasons. However a disastrous slide
found the club languishing in the 3rd division when Paul "Dishy" Richardson became manager in 1999. He
transformed the side bringing in experienced ex-Cwmbran Town stalwarts Mickey Copeman and Kevin Payne
alongside teenage striker Shane Williamson who for a dozen seasons was top scorer. The side was later bolstered by
the return of ex-professionals Ben Graham and Mark Parfitt who had started their careers with Celtic as juniors. There
were successive promotions from the 3rd to 1st division between 1999 and 2001 and in 1999/2000 Celtic won the
Gwent County league cup.
In 2004/5 under new player-manager Mickey Copeman, the club were runners-up to Clydach Wasps who applied for
membership of the Welsh Football League but their ground was adjudged not to be of the required standard. Celtic
applied instead. Their ground outside Cwmbran Stadium was also not up to standard but Celtic were able to share
Cwmbran Stadium with Cwmbran Town and so the Welsh League accepted the club's application. In their first season
in the WFL, 2005/6, Celtic struggled near the bottom of the 3rd division all season. In April 2006 Celtic travelled to
Chepstow Town needing a win to stay in the league. They went 1-0 down. With minutes of normal time remaining
substitute Jason Price equalised but a draw was not enough. In the 9th minute of time added on player manager
Mickey Copeman went up for a corner. The ball was cleared off the goal-line by a Chepstow defender; it hit Copeman
on the back and rebounded into the net. Celtic had achieved a last gasp win and, by winning their final match against
Seven Sisters, Celtic escaped relegation on goal difference. The following season, 2006/7, Celtic now back at their
upgraded and newly named ground, Celtic Park, were transformed. They only lost 2 games all season and enjoyed a
24 match unbeaten run. They went to Risca for their last match already promoted but needed to win to secure the
Championship ahead of Llanwern. With 3 minutes left Celtic were 1-0 down playing with 10 men after a red card for
Kevin Payne. Then Sammy Winter equalised with a speculative long range shot and in the last minute a Risca
clearance found full back Ben Graham outside the box. He hit a perfect looping volley over the goalkeeper's head and
into the net. Celtic were champions. In Division 2 Celtic consolidated their position in seasons 2007/8 and 2008/9
during which they introduced a number of players from their new partnership with Fairwater High School Football
Academy in Cwmbran managed by Celtic coach Della Cheedy.
In 2009/10 Celtic were front runners destined to win the Championship. However they lost two key defenders who
transferred to Aberaman Athletic at a crucial time and vital points were dropped. Nevertheless Celtic still finished their
games in 1st place and would win the title if Penrhiwceiber failed to win at Newcastle Emlyn. The home side was 2-0
up at one stage but Ceiber clawed their way back to win 3-2 and deny Celtic the championship. At the end of the
season Mickey Copeman stood down after 7 years in the role during which he secured 3 promotions for the club from
the Gwent County League to the top division of the Welsh League. In their first season in the 1st division, 2010/11
under new manager Ben Graham, Celtic struggled during the first half of the season and were firmly planted in the
relegation zone but a superb run-in during which they won 7 and drew 3 of 14 games earned them 12th place out of
16. In 2011/12 a good start was made under Alan Dibble who stepped down in September with the team in 5th place,
to be replaced by Gareth Morgan. Either side of Christmas, Celtic were 2nd
but they had a dismal end of season run
and again finished 12th. In 2012/13 with head coach Della Cheedy at the helm, Celtic started brightly with some fine
performances including a 4-2 win versus reigning champions Cambrian & Clydach but they lost their way in the New
Year and at one stage were in last place. However, with characteristic determination they dragged themselves up the
table and sealed another season in the top division with a resounding 5-1 win against Haverfordwest County. Under
Steve Morgan in 2013/14 Celtic underperformed finishing 4th from bottom and with Afan Lido relegated from the
Welsh Premier League, Celtic were relegated despite appealing to an FAW arbitration. With Della Cheedy back as
manager in 2014/15 Celtic finished 7th
in Division 2. This season the club’s youthful management team comprises
former goalkeeper Nicky Church (manager) and ex-team captain Craig Cheedy (assistant).

South Wales Womens & Girls League Division Two: Caldicot Town Ladies 2 - 2 Cascade YC
Caldicot Ladies kicked off their league campaign with a draw at home to Cascade YC in the second division

Welsh League Youth Division East: Caldicot Town 3 - 6 Ton Pentre
The Youth team had a tough start against a very good Ton Pentre side losing 6-3 the only highlight was
Dylan Griffiths scoring a hatrick in 40 mins. Jacob Ovendale opened up the scoring for Ton Pentre after just
12 minutes and it was 2-0 during the 23rd minute of play when Kieran Tann broke inside from the right wing
to place the ball low past our goalkeeper. Daniel Kinsey ran though the Caldicot defence to make it 3-0 in the
40th minute. Tann was involved in Ton Pentre’s fourth goal when he played a through ball for Tyler Rees to
flick it on for Jamie Coombes to slot the ball past the goalkeeper. Ton Pentre were now dominant and made
it 5-0 in the 73rd minute when Tann burst through the Caldicot defence to score. Shortly after, Dylan Griffiths
grabbed a goal back for Caldicot for 5-1. Rees scored Ton Pentre’s sixth goal of the match when some
sublime trickery saw him break through the Caldicot defence in the 84th minute. Before the full-time whistle
was blown, Caldicot managed to score two further goals through Griffiths, who completed a hat-trick making
the final score 6-3.

Welsh Cup 2nd Preliminary Round: Penlan 1 - 2 Caldicot Town;
Report by Mark Anderson (edited by Kev!)
Caldicot travelled west to Swansea and came away with a narrow victory against Penlan.
This game was full of incident, mostly unsavoury from a minority of Penlan players who not
only let themselves down but the rest of their team mates down. I will try my best to report on
the football side of things but it will be hard having witnessed the scenes I did at Saturday’s
game. (The most bizarre game I’ve witnessed in a long time..the editor) From the kick-off the
Penlan boys were fired up and are a team used to winning so Caldicot were going to have to
be on their metal if they were to get a result. It is worth noting at this stage that Manager Mark
Williams was missing 8 regular players from the squad due to work commitments and Andrew
Wenzel’s, wedding, which took place in Cyprus ( a number of players flew out to celebrate
the event). After two minutes the number 10 for Penlan was barking out expletives at our
linesman for daring to give a throw-in in favour of us and so from that early on you had the
sense that this was going to be an interesting game. The game had barely settled down when
early Caldicot pressure saw the ball fall to Sam Watkins at the edge of the Penlan area where
the normally left footed Watkins used his right foot to the same effect as his curled shot that
gave the Penlan keeper no chance. The perfect start but would it quite down the home side?
The next quarter of an hour in the game saw Penlan literally try and stamp some authority on
the game as the abusive number 10 started to froth at the mouth and question the sexuality
of anyone from Caldicot, amazingly he nearly survived the whole half before picking up a
much deserved yellow card. His strike partner also joined him in the book for something
totally avoidable, the temperature rose to boiling point both on and off the pitch. Amidst all the
aggro Penlan were actually playing some decent football but the team’s inability to control
themselves was ultimately going to prove their downfall. Caldicot were holding firm but were
struggling to find a second goal, at last half-time came with Caldicot holding a slender lead.
Into the second half and after being fed another load of raw meat the Penlan boys came out
firing on all cylinders and managed to last 5 mins in before another yellow was shown. This
time however it was the number 9 second yellow and so off he went to the disbelief of Penlan
who must obviously get away with that sort of thing on a regular basis.....the Caldicot faithful
were starting to see how most teams must dread going there especially if you do not have a
strong Referee. Luckily we did and he was also being assessed so this meant he had to be
strong and he did not let himself down. You could say he deserved man of the match
although I know no one present from Penlan would agree as there were calls after the game
for none of their player to shake his hand! The next bit of action was, yes you guessed it,
another red card. This time there was no one on the pitch who deserved it more than the 10,
who then decided to come back around our side of the pitch looking to start trouble. In a
word I would sum up this player as a "Disgrace" and an embarrassment to the side he
represents. The Penlan management were called onto the pitch (I assume that's what
happened) by the Referee to calm them down but they seemed to have little control over the
players. The blood was up and egged on by their fans they were not going to change their
style of play any time soon. Caldicot with a two man numerical advantage were struggling
more than when they faced eleven men as Penlan pulled all players back behind the ball
once they lost possession making it difficult for Caldicot to their credit. With 15 minutes gone
in the second half the final red card was awarded to the Penlan number 5. The Centre Half
had been overly aggressive throughout the game and after picking up a yellow only minutes
before, the Referee was then dishing out a second yellow for what I can only assume was
something he said. This by now had incensed the home team, management and support but
the Referee was standing firm in what would I am sure been one of his hardest games he has
had to officiate? The game should now be a formality for Caldicot who were playing against
8 men. There were thoughts that Penlan might try and get the game abandoned but it
appeared that with the three players sent off the remaining ones at least for their part seemed
intent on playing some football. With 30 minutes gone and Caldicot looking like they were
going to settle for a 1-0 win the unthinkable happened.......Penlan equalised! Now the focus
was on football, the remaining Penlan players were knocking it around and causing Caldicot
some difficulty. As they pushed forward they found themselves with a shooting chance which
was hit low down to Matt Sandiford’s right hand side. The big keeper saved well but the
defence had switched off as the rebound was tapped in, queue wild celebrations.
Caldicot were in shock and the players on the pitch were being put through the ringer by the
home support who couldn't believe that we were a Welsh League team. Manager Mark
Williams then brought on his only subs in youngsters Reece Norris and Ryan Coles where
you could have understood if they did not fancy going on but on they went as Caldicot tried to
regain the initiative. Mitchell Slape hit a powerful drive which would have been certain goal
had it have been either side of the keeper and a Rory Gary looping header was saved
superbly by the keeper who in all fairness had a very good game.
Now into Extra Time it appeared that Caldicot were back on top and so they should have
been with a three man advantage! Penlan were defending for their lives as Caldicot had the
luxury of plenty of possession although they struggled to find an opening. Jason Thorn was
presented with a couple of chances that were once again dealt with by the Penlan keeper.
With the final 15 minutes underway it looked very much like this was going to go to penalties.
The home side were by now obviously very tired and posed little threat to the Caldicot goal
were as at the other end Caldicot were lacking the guile to unpick the Penlan defence who
were well organised and earned much credit on reflection for their efforts made after the three
earlier sending’s off. With 5 minutes gone Caldicot at last found a goal that turned out to be
the winner. Shane Jeremiah picked up the ball in his own half and carried it forward. The
Penlan defence already stretched let Jeremiah continue and when within twenty yards the
Caldicot defender struck a left foot shot that went low before hitting the right hand post and
bouncing into the net much to the relief of the whole team and travelling supporters.
The standard of refereeing during the game is what you see in the Welsh League week in
week out, he was not going to be intimidated so full credit to him. As for Caldicot I was proud
to see them stand strong.
