HAZARDS IN THE AUTO SHOP

1. Gasoline:

Gasoline is flammable, toxic, is an irritant, and is very volatile. (Being volatile means it evaporates quickly, filling the room with these flammable & toxic vapours which can be fatal). Also, cars always undergo incomplete combustion of gasoline so auto shops must be well ventilated to protect workers from inhaling these fumes.

2. Engine Emissions:

Ontario's Drive Clean program's goal is to minimize air pollution. There is a minimum standard for emissions by vehicles of harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Catalytic Converters are a component of vehicles which decomposes (breaks down) nitrogen oxide into less harmful gases.

3. Oil:

Oil is used to lubricate parts of a car engine so it can work more efficiently. It can be hazardous. If too hot it can cause serious burns. It can cause significant environmental damage if it spills/leaks. Oil should always be disposed of safely in a hazardous waste facility. Oil can pick up traces of metals from pipes in the engine system, increasing toxins.

4. Antifreeze:

Antifreeze helps keep the vehicle's engine cool. A car's cooling system is pressurized so great care must be taken when opening this system. If opened when hot, it could release a dangerous spray of hot antifreeze. Sometimes other dangerous chemicals are added to antifreeze to slow corrosion. Antifreeze can pick up traces of metals from pipes in the engine system, increasing toxins.
