The priests who came from abroad

Rules laid down for the observance of religion

1 The soldiers who barged in ruined the Christmas celebrations. The people were blamed for believing in a Catholic priest. Eight of the leading Catholic followers who were there, were blamed for this. They were whipped and imprisoned. But they could not catch Fr. Joseph Vaz. He had fled the scene.

2 Fr. Vaz understood that it was difficult to carry on his religious work in the areas that belonged to the Dutch. So he decided to go to Kandy in search of protection from the King of Kandy. Accordingly, he went to Puttalam which belonged to the Sinhala king.

3 From Puttalam, Fr. Vaz walked into the interior of the country. He was arrested in a place called ‘We-uda’ by a person named De Lanerolle. He was suspected of being a spy. As a prisoner he was taken to Kandy. The king granted him freedom by releasing him.

4 In later years, the church in Kandy became his abode and centre. From here he began to tour in towns like Jaffna, Mannar, Chilaw, Negombo, Colombo, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Sitawaka, Ruwanwella and various other towns. His mission was to encourage the Catholics.

5 The Dutch tried their best to arrest Fr. Vaz in one of these places. In every such instance he fled to Kandy and escaped. According to the request of Fr. Vaz, more religious priests came to Sri Lanka, to carry on their religious activities here.

This article is part of a continuing series on Sri Lanka history

7 For this purpose they laid down rules. People were forced to come to Dutch schools to learn their religion. Furthermore, they forced the people to be baptized according to Dutch rules and get married according to their religious rites. This was imposed on the people who lived in the areas that belonged to the Dutch Company.

8 The Dutch decided not to give any important posts to anybody who did not follow their religion. The people began to feel that what was expected of them was to be bound by a certain social pattern for the time being.

9 Getting baptized and getting married in church was nothing more than getting their marriages and births registered for them. Those who aspired to get into posts like ‘Mudliyar’ and ‘Arachchi’ did not find it difficult to abide by their rules.

10 They believed that rules regarding the observance of the religion of the Dutch was not much of a hindrance to follow their own religion privately. As such they did not mind following the rules imposed by the Dutch. There were thousands recorded as becoming their followers. But there was no religious teaching or service expected of them for their change.

To be continued....

6 Due to the harassment caused by the Dutch, The Catholics regarded the King of Kandy as their saviour. Meanwhile the Dutch decided to ill-treat the Buddhists and Hindus. They forced the people living in their areas to follow their religion.

Q: Where did Fr. Joseph Vaz go to find protection from the Dutch? Name three towns that he toured from there.

Children’s Day

“Mankind owes to the child the best it has to give.”

– UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child

Happy Children’s Day from all of us here at the Funday Times. Children’s Day is celebrated to increase awareness of the rights, care and education of children. We hope you have a special day!

The UN agency for children

In the aftermath of World War II, the plight of Europe’s children was grave, and a new agency created by the United Nations stepped in to provide food and clothing and health care to these children.

In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent part of the UN. Following more than a decade of focus on child health issues, UNICEF expanded its interests to address other issues, such as education, that were important for a child’s wellbeing.

In 1965, the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for the promotion of brotherhood among nations.”

Today, UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories, including Sri Lanka!

Declaration of the Rights of the Child

In 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which defines children’s rights

to protection, education, health care, shelter, and good nutrition.l The hope, vision and commitment of world leaders

in 1989 led to the Convention.

l The Convention is the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. The Convention changed the way children are viewed – now they are seen as human beings with a distinct set of rights.

l Despite this progress, the Convention is still not fully implemented or widely known and understood. Millions of children continue to suffer violations of their rights when they are denied adequate health care, nutrition, education and protection from violence.

l Poverty affects children disproportionately. Around the world, one out of five children lives in extreme poverty. Their families struggle to afford the basic health care and nutrition needed to provide them a strong start. This can have a lasting effect – in 2019, 149 million children under the age of five were stunted.

l Despite great progress in school enrolment in many parts of the world, more than 175 million children are not enrolled in pre-primary education. Many will never learn to read or write.

It is up to today’s generation to demand that world leaders from government, business and communities end child rights violations now, once and for all.
