Our classes are in full swing now with full programming having begun in each classroom and all the Music, PE, Grade 7 Band and Library well underway. Our first term goes through until the end of November and in December your child will receive a full report card on his or her growth during the first months of school. If you have questions about progress or about the curriculum being taught please ask your child’s teacher at any time. Many parents ask questions about homework and supporting student learning. Homework assign- ments will vary according to classroom and grade. For the most part our primary students will benefit from reading each day on their own and with a family member. Enjoying reading and talking about books is a fundamental basis for literacy development. Intermediate students also should be reading every day at home. They will also have some work to finish up from time to time, some- times math practice and projects that they work on at school and at home. It is important that the students do not spend too much time with their homework as they benefit from other activities and family time. We are excited to see the afterschool programs starting up! There are so many different activities for the students. Stop by the bulletin board outside room 105 or come in to the Community Room to see what activities we have. There is something for everyone! Hopefully I will see parents, caregivers and other family members around the school, at the new family dinner or during our Halloween event. Please come to our upcoming school events and enjoy the time with other Maywood families. We are always looking for volunteers for these events as well. MAYWOOD COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER October 1, 2016

To Our Maywood Community,

It was wonderful to see so many of our families

come to school together last week to meet the

teachers and to have a conversation about the stu-

dents. Our classes are in full swing now with full

programming having begun in each classroom and

all the Music, PE, Grade 7 Band and Library well

underway.

Our first term goes through until the end of

November and in December your child will receive

a full report card on his or her growth during the

first months of school. If you have questions about

progress or about the curriculum being taught

please ask your child’s teacher at any time.

Many parents ask questions about homework and

supporting student learning. Homework assign-

ments will vary according to classroom and grade.

For the most part our primary students will benefit

from reading each day on their own and with a

family member. Enjoying reading and talking

about books is a fundamental basis for literacy

development. Intermediate students also should

be reading every day at home. They will also have

some work to finish up from time to time, some-

times math practice and projects that they work on

at school and at home. It is important that the

students do not spend too much time with their

homework as they benefit from other activities and

family time.

We are excited to see the afterschool programs

starting up! There are so many different activities

for the students. Stop by the bulletin board outside

room 105 or come in to the Community Room to

see what activities we have. There is something for

everyone!

Hopefully I will see parents, caregivers and other

family members around the school, at the new

family dinner or during our Halloween event.

Please come to our upcoming school events and

enjoy the time with other Maywood families. We

are always looking for volunteers for these events

as well.

Thank you, once again, the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society for their in-

credible help with our breakfast and snack pro-gram. Did you know they supply all the Nutrigrain bars for the school? They also give us all of the cereal for the breakfast program! This food allows us to have a great breakfast program as well as feed all of the kids in our afterschool programs.

WE LOVE OUR BURNABY FIREFIGHTERS!

BURNABY PUBLIC LIBRARY’S FRESH START 2016

In celebration of our 60th anniversary, Burna-

your library account waived. Visit the service

desk of any Burnaby Public Library branch be-

tween Monday, September 19 and Sunday,

October 2, 2016, and we will waive the late

fees currently owing on your library account,

up to a maximum of $100. This is a one-time

special amnesty for fines accrued prior to

September 19, and is only valid between Sep-

tember 19 and October 2, 2016.

ROTARY Coats for Kids Does your child need a warm coat for the winter ahead? We are fortunate again to have the Rotary Club come to Maywood to provide our children with warm coats! West Coast Recess

At Maywood, our students will go outside to play for recess rain or shine. Please make

sure your child has warm, water resistant coats and hoods or hats to keep them dry. A pair of boots on rainy or snowy days are also helpful. You can consider keeping a change of

clothes at school for your child as well.
