To enter Sydney Harbour in any apital ship isa unique adventure - particularly if PortJackson turns on our typically blue skies and Ught.airs.

But even when the conditions are sour - as theywere for MIDWAY's arrival. they mattered little to themedia contingent which covered Ihis ship's Sydneydebut.

Slipping through the chilly drizzle and occasionalsqualls, MIDWAY and her 4400-strong complementseemed 10 fill the entire reserve ships' area in AtholBight as she neared her mooring at the number fourbuoy.

The efficient public affairs team on the carrier, headed by Lieutenant Glen King. made things simplefor the local media party - we could do as we liked, aslong as we did what we were told.

For this trip, MIDWAY (commissioned in 1945 butthe subject of probably the most extensive modernisation any warship has had in 1955 and 1970) carriedmore than 60 aircraft. about half of them Hornets.

Her history is as impressive as the hallowed name shebears - that of the battle which turned the tide forAmerica in the Pacific 45 years ago.

Shortly after her commissioning. she sailed on a scientific mission to fire 11 Gennan V-2 rocket from hernight deck - the first time this had Deen done from aship at sea.

She saw active service in Vietnam, operating in theTonkin Gulf; it was in the course of this tour that heraviators flew 11.000 combat sorties.

MIDWAY fighters were responsible for shootingdown the first three MIG's the North Vietnamese lostin the war.

The second modernisation from 1966 was the mostspectacular - her flight deck grew from 2.82 acres to4.02 and she gained three deck-edge elevators. plus arresting gear. machinery and catapults.

Over the years, CV-41 has been modernised and redesigned to the extent that the ship is now operationallyequivalent to the newest conventional powered carriers.

At once the newest and the oldest of the world'scombat ships, this gnllld old dame is striking evidenceof American military might; as more than one of ourmedia group commented: aren't you glad they're onour side?
