Annual Quality Assurance Report 2010-2011

Part – A

The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year

towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the

year.

The plan of action for the academic year 2010-11 was discussed during the joint

meeting held on 16-07-2010. Different issues were critically examined. Quality

circles and impact creating aspects were identified. The members of IQAC

approved the action plans. Following are the action plans to fulfill the

requirements of 21 departments 721 students 55 teaching faculty and 31 non -

teaching members and the outcome achieved during the period 15-07-2010 to

21-05-2011.

INFRASTRUCTURAL PLANS

1) To take up the construction of Golden Jubilee Memorial Hall of

the College.

Blue-print procedure and site identification work completed. Building

committee decided to take up the work through engineering cell.

2) To work out the plan about Golden Jubilee programmes.

Inaugural programme of Golden Jubilee tentatively scheduled

during Jan 2012.

3) To setup endangered plants protection and development centre

in the campus.

Endangered plants protection and development centre is established with

an investment of Rs 50,000/-

4) To take initiative to set up Nature Awareness Learning centre in the

medicinal plant Garden.

5) To make arrangement for periodical medical care availability in

the campus.

Request is made to the Honorable President, SRK Institute of Medical

Science Sirsi to provide required medical assistance to the institution

on demand.

6) To take steps to fill up existing vacancies in the teaching staff.

Request is made to the Department of Collegiate Education for

permission to fill up existing vacancies.

7) To set up additional equipment in the audio-visual centre.

Mounting of LCD, setting up of new screen and purchase of Hi-tech

Board with an investment of Rs 2, 00,000/- arranged.

8) To organize additional research and extension activities of

Researcher’s forum of the college.

The researcher’s forum took initiative to help the teaching faculty in the

identification of Research problem and submission to funding agency.

The dept. of Geography, Chemistry organized the extension activities in

the field of Bio-Conservation, Soil-testing, Water-analysis, and climate-

monitoring activities.

9) Arrangement for orientation and placement of learners after the

completion of graduation (arranging for campus interviews)

The Cell makes all possible arrangements for orientation and placement of

learners. The details are as below:

10) Provide for leak proof roofing in the first floor of the old building.

Leak proof roofing in the first floor of the old building arranged with an

investment of Rs 1,50,000/-.

11) Extension of I.C.T. (Information Communicative Technology) to the

learners.

Five more computers are added to I.C.T. Center for the benefit of

learners.

12) Initiative to establish Bio-tech finishing school in the college.

The bio-tech finishing school is established with the initial investment of

Rs 50 lakhs. Additional amount of Rs 5 lakhs is invested for new

equipments and infrastructure.

13) Lab renovation and improvements.

Acid proof painting inside the Chemistry lab and other suitable painting

work in the dept. of Physics and other Bio-sciences completed with an

expenditure of Rs 2 lakhs.

14) Initiatives for the development of faculty in various departments

Prof. S.S.Bhat, Prof. N.N.Vernekar, Prof. K.N.Reddy, Prof. Parimala

Deshpande and Dr.R.R.Hegde attended the refresher courses. 80% of the

teaching staff attended / presented paper / Chaired the session at State /

National / International Seminars.

15) To organize University level Indoor Sports Tournament in the college

University level Chess tournament and University Blue selections

conducted by the Physical Education Dept. of the College.

16) Promotion of cultural activities by organizing youth festival in the

college.

University Zonal level Youth Festival was organized in the college and

more than 40 colleges participated in the various cultural competitions.

17) To organize talent search programme in the college.

‘Inchar’ (Talent search programme) arranged in the college and the best

talents were encouraged by giving prizes.

18) To add more computers to the computer lab.

Six more computers procured for various uses in the institution.

2) ACADEMIC PLANS

1) To induct the beginners to the institution.

Induction programme arranged for beginners in order to acquaint them

with the different learning facilities available at the institution and also to

motivate them to involve in different cultural and sports activities.

2) Determining focus point of activities of departments.

Continuation of innovative education process by organizing focus point of

activities for 26 departments. (See Annexure-I)

3) Furtherance of tie-up with agencies to undertake research and

extension activities.

Educational co-operation with Govt. College under Apta-Mitra, the

scheme of Government of Karnataka. The Examination for 1000 students

of Govt. College and JMJ College is arranged in our institution.

College arranged KAS and IAS coaching classes for the students in

association with Revenue Department, Sirsi. More than 100 learners

benefited from the programme. We borrowed books from our library and

also we got the books from TMC (Town Municipality Council).30% of

our final years students benefited. 18 lecturers took part in it of which 10

are from our college. The entire training was made available to the

students free of cost.

4) Continuation of Reach out programs.

The members of the faculty continued to visit junior colleges, delivered

lectures for the procurement of quality input in to the institution.

5) Organizing lectures by learned personalities.

Music department arranged a lecture and demonstration on the topic

‘Navarasa’ in Music & Dance by Smt. Seema Bhagwat.

Lecture programme on ‘Religion misguiding Dharma’, Indians confused

regarding their existence & Knowledge- by Prof.Balgangadhar University

Belgium.

S.R.Hegde, Kadve Endowment Lecture on ‘Education and Protection of

Human Rights’ by Dr. J.S.Patil, Vice Chancellor Law University,

Dharwad.

Hindi Department organised a Special lecture on ‘National Integration and

Hindi Language’ by Dr.Manjunath Ambiga.

Biotechnology and Biology department organized one day work shop on

‘My Village Bio-diversity’ by Dr. Subhaschandran, Kumta.

6) Wider publicity and orientation about vision and mission of the

college.

Multi point display of vision and mission is arranged. The same is printed

in the college prospectus. Orientation is given by the faculty to the

learners.

7) To establish and develop Information Communication Technology

Centre (I.C.T.) in the college.

Extension of ICT Centre in the college. IQAC of the College directed the

teacher and students for motivate the learners to make use of the ICT

Centre established in the Library.

8) Promotion and motivation for science education.

Karnataka Vijnan Parishad Bengaluru & Government of Karnataka

Scholarships procured (C.V.Raman Scholarship) and distributed the cash

prize to the Science students.

9) Identification and encouragement to the advance learners.

Teaching departments were asked to identify advance learners and

motivate them by giving additional reference books, suggested special

readings with extra- care.

10) To make additions of worthy books to the library

For the current academic year books worth Rs. 97,465/- were purchased

and added to the library. These books include quality reference books on

different branches of knowledge.

11) To organize talent search day.

It is organized by the Arts Circle of the college to search special talents

like fine art, music and dance.

12) Continuation of language skill development programmes.

Faculty members, specially trained in Infosys under Global skill

enhancement programme trained the students in communication skills and

computer knowledge. The department of English conducted spoken

English training for the learners and a special Bridge Course for the

Optional Students. Sanskrit Department arranged Sanskrit Spoken classes

for the learners.

13) Enhancement of activities of Researchers’ Forum.

Learned personalities are invited to deliver lectures on various branches of

research opportunities and funding agencies. Dr. A.A.Natu, Scientist,

ISER, Pune addressed the students and staff on the need and scope of

research in basic science.

14) Send up programme for outgoing students.

Out going students were bid a warm fare-well which would make them to

keep in touch with the institution even after the completion of their degree

course.

3) OTHER PLANS

1) Extension of hostel facilities to the girl students in the campus.

II Floor of the old Hostel Building is completed and added 13 rooms made

available to the girls in the college.

2) “Green campus” and “Clean campus” Concept development.

Planting of Flowering plants, shading plants is made regular feature.

Learners & Teachers involved in developing greenery and maintaining

cleanliness in the college.

3) Construction of a separate building for Museum.

The MLC Grant of Rs 2.5 lakhs sanctioned by Basavaraj Horatti is

procured. The task is given to the dept of PWD to complete the work as

early as possible.

4) Procurement of quality furniture for teachers and learners.

Furniture worth Rs. 60,000 is procured for the use of teachers and

learners.

5) Strengthening IQAC in the college.

The functionaries of IQAC, particularly academic, audit, cultural

promotion, sports development are given special attention during the

academic year.

PART-B

Q 1 Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution.

The Institution has continued its honest efforts to accomplish the

objectives as conveyed in the prospectus distributed for the learners about

academic and non academic activities spread throughout the year. Human

Resource Development with focus on knowledge procurement, skill

development, leadership training, social awareness, national integration

and development of sportsman spirit are the guiding factors behind

the design of activities of the year. The number and nature of activities

directly or indirectly reflect the vision and growing prospects. The

activities clearly indicate that the efficient teaching and non-teaching

team is making its honest effort to prove that the out put of the institution

fit for job and fit for life at the exit point.

Providing admissions to the available courses and combinations to all

deserving students denying none from the opportunity to learn.

Counseling with parents and students at the time of admission.

Induct the freshers with a warm well-come, acquainting the opportunities

and facilities available at the institution.

Training sport persons, selections and encouraging participating at the

university and Inter-University level competition.

Involvement of students in community service.

Conducting skill and personality development activities.

To invite private companies for campus interviews.

Motivating the students to take part in music, art and dance.

Students’ association with social service organization.

Conducting free and fair college elections in healthy atmosphere.

Inculcating patriotism with the celebrations of National festivals.

Providing comfortable accommodation for girls in hostels.

Promoting the activities of Union and Gymkhana.

“Srajana’’ by the department of Journalism.

Honoring and encouraging the distinct performers in sports and other

competitions.

Programmes on environmental awareness.

Training in writing skill, speech and debate.

Blood donation camps by NCC and Red Cross units.

Q.2. New academic programmes initiated:

Institution has taken the initiative for the establishment of Bio-tech

Finishing School to orient the graduates so as to make them ready to

work in industries.

The College has established Information Communication Center ICT at

the library with continuous internet connectivity available to learners and

the staff.

The Botany department has created a Nature Awareness Learning Center

in the Medicinal Plant garden for use of students of life-science.

Study of diploma along with degree is further encouraged.

‘Diploma in Dance’ in the Music Dept, Diploma in Tourism in the Social

Science Dept, P.G.Diploma in Bio-technology in the Dept of Bio-

Sciences are some of the new academic programme within the academic

limits of the institution.

Q.3. Innovation in curricular design and transaction:

As a step towards making the university education more relevant to the

present needs, the newly framed University semester syllabus has

incorporated the much needed concepts like Indian Constitution,

Personality development, communicative skill, environmental studies,

Human Rights study, Computer Application etc.

Faculty members participated and contributed new ideas while designing

university syllabus.

Q.5. Examination reforms implemented:

The implementation of semester system at the graduation level intensified

the process of students’ performance evaluation. Examination for every

six months made the learning activity more rigorous and intensified. The 10

introduction of internal assessment scheme made the students to involve

seriously on seminars, project work, assignments and discussions. Two

tests between each semester made the evaluation of students, performance

more accurate. Question papers for the tests are set in the model of

semester examination. Continues evaluation is ensured. Transfarcy in

evaluation. Answer scripts timely assessed and given back to the students

to acknowledge them about their performance. The result sheets of

internal marks circulated among the students.

Q.6. Candidates qualified NET/ SLET/GATE etc.

Mr.Kartik Hemadri Physics department has qualified in the National

Eligibility Test (NET).

Q.7 Initiatives towards faculty development programme:

To gear up research activity and also to motivate the faculty members to

involve in research activities ‘Researchers Forum’ has been established.

Meetings conducted in regular intervals to monitor the activities and to

discuss the progress. Faculty member availed ample opportunities for

their development and took successful steps towards self betterment by

way of research projects, contributing articles, presenting seminar papers,

attending seminars and workshops, delivering lectures, publishing books

and taking various responsibilities. (See Annexure-II)

Q.18 Community Services:

The institution has continued its mission of extending its valuable service

to the community. Having a strong faith that the ultimate goal of

education as a means to achieve Socio-Economic progress through

awakening the consciousness of the community. The institution is putting

its efforts to inculcate values, eradicate ignorance, empower with

knowledge, expanding the outlook, and prepare the young generation to

face the challenges and to take up responsibilities. The following notable

The KSOU (Mysore) centre housed at the institution provides opportunity

to peruse education in varied disciplines.

As one of the district Centers for conducting common entrance test (CET)

for professional courses. PU Students of 6 Taluka are provided the

facility to write examination.

Accommodation to girl students of the nearby Taluka is provided in the

institution Ladies Hostel enabling them to attend CET Coaching classes.

Budget analysis and discussions by the department of economies.

Interested public is always invited to Memorial lectures, Endowment

lectures music and dance programmes.

Interested local youths are allowed to take admission for Diploma Course

in Kathak.

Protection and preservation of historical monuments available in the

surrounding areas.

The post office branch, situated in the college campus is well utilized by

the public of the surrounding layouts.

MES Career guidance centre is extending its services in training youth for

competitive examinations and library facility is open for the alumni and

other pursuing youths.

MES Vidyarthi Souhardha Co-operative Society benefited many students

of the adjacent layouts in getting stationeries. This unit is owned and

managed by students and teachers.

Students of Govt. College are accommodated to write University

examination of each semester in the college.

Well equipped and well maintained MES Multi Gymnasium is kept open

for students, Alumni and interested local youth.

Q.23. Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced and

the action taken on student feed back:

1. The process of evaluation of the institutional potential is taken with the

view of reaching excellence. A questionnaire format was given to outgoing

students. Most of the students answered all the questions.

2. Evaluation of teachers was also taken for each term.

3. Student feed back was objectively attended and impressions were

processed for the over all improvement of the institution.

4. Some of the student responses are as under.

a) About 55% of the students wanted to go for higher education and 40%

of them wanted to take up job. 5% of them wanted to be at home

assisting their parents in agriculture.

b) The opinion about Teachers is varied right from the word “average” to

“Excellent”. About 86% of the students have satisfaction about the

teachers and departments.

c) Some of them are happy that they can get more number of reference

books on most of the subjects.

d) Students desired to have an ambience in the College which would

enable them to communicate easily in English.

6. Student suggestions:

The following suggestions have been made by the students for the

improvement of the campus.

a) The students have suggested the necessity of good water facilities in

ladies room and boys toilet.

b) Students are eager to join the Alumni Association after the completion

of their Degree..

The MES Employees Co-operative society’s Charitable fund for the poor

has assisted 20 students with an amount of Rs.7800/-

71 students were sent to participate at higher level competitions in debate,

Quiz, sports and other extra-curricular activities at an expenditure of

Rs.51,705/-

The department of Sanskrit procured Rs 4000/- as Sanskrit Scholarship

from “Rashtriya Sanskrit Samsthan” New Delhi and distributed to 5

students who secured highest marks in Sanskrit. Total Rs.20,000/-

Apart from these, the university ‘Blues’ and students of ‘Outstanding

Achievements’ are honoured with moments and cash prizes on the

Founders-day occasion. Winners at the various institutional level

Q.30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association.

The institution is proud of its innumerable distinct products and many of

them have close-ties with their Almamater. Now and then they contribute

to the academic folds of the institution in the form of participation in

seminars, experience sharing sessions etc. In the annual special feature

programme of the college called “Hosachiguru Haleberu” alumni of

varied interest came together in large number on a common platform and

showcased their talents.

Q.31. Activities and support from the parent teacher association

The institution believes in team-oriented culture and has built-up a

compatible relationship with society, co-operation from parents, as

primary stake holders is always expected. Solidarity with parent folk is

established by sticking to following practices.

At the time of admission parents are asked to accompany their children.

A cordial invitation extended to visit the institution to acknowledge the

progress of their children.

Efforts are on to improve the involvement of more and more parents in

The sports wing was committed to continue its good work all through the year

by consolidating the available resource it swung into action to fulfill the student

needs. The institution took lead in the field with fine show by students at

various university / state level competitions. To present a few distinct

achievements:

1. Inter Collegiate Chess Competition and Selection of Karnataka University

were held on 19-08-2010 to 23-08-2010 in our College. The Students of our

college women team while displaying the game artistically, and became the

champions of the University. They are Ranjana G.Hegde, B.Sc.III,

H.V.Pratima, B.Sc.II, Swapna G.Prabhu, B.Sc.II, Suparna S.Hegde, B.A.III,

Vidya R.Bhat,B.A.III, Bhavya V.Hegde.

2. Rohit V. Hegde, B.Sc.I is University Blue in Chess- Game. He represented

the Karnataka University in the Inter-University Competition held at

Satyabhama University Tamil Nadu.

3. TABLE-Tennis Women team won the Zonal level Championship.

In the inter collegiate Athletics held at B.L.D.A’S A.S.Patil Commerce

College, Bijapur from 28-10-2010 to 31-10-2010 our students bagged prizes

in Hammer Throw –Gold Medal, Javelin Throw and Shot-Put -Bronze

Medal, and Discuss throw – Gold Medal.

Our students also participated in the 3rd zonal level Table Tennis tournament

at Divekar Commerce College on Feb. 22nd and 23rd 2011, won the

Championship.

Our students who have participated at the Taluka Dasara Sports Meet. Anand

N. B.A.III won Gold Medal in 4x400 m Relay and Manjunath D.Hegde B.A.

I won gold medal in High-Jump.

On 07-05-2011 our Annual sports meet was conducted, some sport events

were also specially conducted for the staff, who participated in the event

with enthusiasm.

All the activities of the dept. of physical education were conducted very

smoothly, for the year 2010-11.

35 NCC cadets attended CATC camp held at Sagrdarshan Karwar.

Q.36. Activities of guidance and counseling unit.

The counseling system is switched over to mentor system under which

students are divided and allotted to each staff-member for personal attention to

contribute to learners’ development. Mentors at their convenience through

formal and informal approach guide counsel and teach the students to develop

The placement cell has been leading students to the portals of corporate

world by disseminating occupational information, training them to

become employable and making arrangement for job induction. The cell

with a renewed focus reaffirmed with its idea that the personality in

students should go in tandem with academics to get an opportunity in the

multi-dimensional world.

The institution has adapted the concept of quality assurance and

initiatives. It is heading towards the successful implementation of quality

management and also believed that a collective effort has to be evolved to

The Researcher’s forum organized several meetings and motivating the

teachers to undertake research projects. Dr. Anilkumar Hegde, Dept of Bio-

technology awarded a Minor Research Project entitled ‘‘Fungal diversity of

Sirsi Region’’. UGC has sanctioned Rs One Lack as financial assistance.

The students are encouraged to under take projects and devise scientific

models. Some of the projects have been presented at University level Science

exhibition. The model ‘Rain Water Harvesting and Recycling exhibited by Miss

Sheetal S. Narvekar and Archana Pai got III prize at Zonal Level Science

Exhibition organized by KRVP, Karnataka Science and Technology Academy,

Department of Science and Technology Govt. of Karnataka. It was hosted by

our college. The Same model is exhibited at state level held at B.V. B. College

Bidar.

Two Students each from Chemistry and Bio-tech. departments have completed

2 research projects under the guidance of Prof. Ganesh Hegde and

Dr. Anilkumar Hegde. An amount of Rs 30,000/- each has been sanctioned for

the research activities under Students Research Work (SRW) scheme.

This year NCC training activities commenced on the first Sunday of Aug.2010

as per the central training schedule. Many colourful events were carried on at

the Coy and at BN level through out the year and our cadets achieved

excellence in many camps both at the State and National Level.

Among the various events the following major activities topped the NCC

Calendar.

Three SD cadets attended National Integration Camp-I (NIC) held at

Mysore from 14-06-2010 to 25-06-2010.

2 SD and 2 SW, cadets attended Tal Sena Camp (TSC – I camp) held

at Rohideshwar,Belgaum from 23-06-2010 to 04-07-2010.

One SD and SW cadets attended TSC I Camp and Three SD and

Four SW cadets attended TSC II camp held at Belgaum from 08-

07-2010 to 19-07 2010

One SD cadet attended TSC-III held at KSRP grounds Belgaum from

27-07-2010 to 05-08-2010.

One SD Cadet attended TSC-IV camp held at APMC Yard Belgaum

from 01-09-2010 to 10-09-2010.

Tree plantation programme at M.M.Arts & Science campus on 15-08-

2010.

One SD cadet attended TSC-V camp held at Bagalkot from 15-09-

2010 to 24-09-2010

25 SD cadets and 10 SW cadets and one ANO attended CATC -camp

at Sagardarshan, Karwar from 25-08-2010 to 03-09-2010.

Blood Donation camp was organized in association with Red Cross

Unit of the college and other organizations on 17-09-2010.As many as

72 cadets donated blood voluntarily.

2 SD and SW each cadets attended pre-RD camp held at APMC Hubli,

from 25-09-2010 to 04-10-2010.

One SW cadet attended pre-RD second camp held at Belgaum from 23-

10-2010 to 01-11-2010.

Kannada Rajyotsava celebration function held on First November.The

state Temperance Board chairman Sachidanand Hegde and State

Western Ghate Task Force chairman Anant Ashisar were the chief

guests. Later cadets distributed bread and biscuits to poor patients at

Pandit Government Hospital, Sirsi.

A contingent of 18 Soldiers of Territorial Armi, Belgaum Unit who

were on Cycle Rally visited this unit on 14-11-2010. The rally was

welcomed and hosted by the NCC Unit. The stage programme was

held and cadets were addressed by them on job opportunities in Army.

NCC Day was celebrated on 21st Nov 2010 as per central programme.

Cadets staged cultural show.

On 1st December, Aids Awareness Programme was held.

Four SD cadets attended NIC-II held at Pandicherry from 09-01-2011

to 20-01-2011

Republic Day celebration was organized by the cadets of Coy. The

Principal of the college delivered the message on the occasion.
