Located in the center of Ohio, Delaware County was founded in 1808 and named after the Delaware Indians.

Delaware is home to Ohio Wesleyan University and the birthplace of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president of the United States. Hayes met his wife, Lucy Webb, when she was one of the first female students at Ohio Wesleyan University. A Hayes Trail through Historic Downtown Delaware brochure takes you past points of interest, including where his birthplace once stood.

Each September, Delaware County celebrates its agricultural heritage with the Delaware County Fair, which also features family entertainment and world-famous harness racing. The internationally renowned Little Brown Jug, one of the jewels in the triple crown of Grand Circuit harness racing, draws over 45,000 spectators. The Little Brown Jug has the uniqueness of being the only such race of its caliber to still take place at a county fair.

Rich in heritage, Delaware County has many buildings and areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Historic Downtown Delaware. Downtown Delaware has been designated a PreserveAmerica Community by the White House, a Best Hometown by Ohio Magazine, and also has the distinction of being a Main Street Community.

Visitors can enjoy a self-guided walking tour of Sandusky and Winter Streets, using brochures prepared by the Delaware County Historical Society. Walking tour brochures are available at the Historical Society and the Delaware County Tourism Bureau.

The Old Towne Hall and Myers Inn in Sunbury are also on the National Register of Historic Places. Both are located on Sunbury’s quaint village square. For a heritage exploration of the square, tour booklets can be borrowed from the Myers Inn Museum.

For more history about Delaware County, plan a visit to one of the Historical Societies and explore their libraries, museums, and attractions.

Delaware – A charming downtown shopping, dining and arts destination. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and

a Preserve America Community, downtown Delaware is

adorned with 1800’s historic charm and alive with activity.

A sought-out dining destination, there are lots of

restaurants to choose from and almost every one of them is

local and unique to the historic downtown. It’s not hard to

find something to truly please the palette. In fact, it would

take dining out almost every night for two weeks to sample

all the eateries before choosing your favorite.

Visitors find the restaurants, family friendly, and

affordable, offering traditional American cuisine as well as

International flair! Whether you prefer burgers or surf and

turf, mac and cheese or flaming cheese, fried rice or beans

and rice – you’ll find it here. Steaks, chops, gyros, gumbo,

wood-fired pizza, hummus, sushi, tacos, seafood, chicken

salad, fish and chips, stir-fry, quesadillas, tempura, spicy

chili, and Muffuletta, are just a few downtown favorites.

Satisfy your sweet tooth at restaurants, coffee shops,

and cafes with cookies as big as your face, yummy cupcakes,

mouthwatering chocolates, homemade frozen custard,

fudge cake, cheese cake, crème Brule, and more.

There are also lots of shops to explore, offering, antiques

and collectibles, new books, vinyl records, beer making

supplies, consignment and vintage clothing, beads, global

wares, jewelry, video games, educational toys and games,

pet needs and original works of art.

Many come to Delaware to be inspired by the arts. The

Delaware Arts Festival takes place downtown annually in

May the Saturday and Sunday after Mother’s Day. Rotating

exhibits can be enjoyed at the Arts Castle, Ohio Wesleyan

University Ross Art Museum, and City Art Center. The

highly acclaimed Central Ohio Symphony provides five

exciting concerts each year, including a holiday concert and

free Independence Day concert on the lawn. Performing

arts, including theater, music, dance, and opera are offered

at Ohio Wesleyan University during the academic season.

In addition, downtown Delaware, is one of the few

remaining places you can still shop, dine and go to the

movies without even moving your car. Built in 1916, the

historic Strand Theatre shows new release and classic films,

including midnight premieres. The Strand is a true gem in

the heart of downtown, and even passers-by cannot resist

the smell of fresh-made popcorn.

The OHIO MACHINE provides a professional sports

team experience rarely found in a town the size of

Delaware. Professional lacrosse at its finest takes place

at Ohio Wesleyan’s Selby Stadium. The MACHINE plays

seven, exciting Saturday evening home games May-July.

The stadium is full of cheering fans during the lacrosse

season. Fans will be happy to discover convenient lodging

and dining options close-by when they come to Delaware.

The world renowned Little Brown Jug Grand Circuit

Harness Race is another not to miss sporting event. The

Jug is a race for three-year-old pacers and one of the jewels

in the triple crown of Grand Circuit harness racing. The

race is always held the third Thursday after Labor Day, and

is also the only such race of its caliber to take place at a

traditional county fair.

The Sunday before the Delaware County Fair, the streets

of Delaware are alive with horses and marching bands.

The annual All-Horse Parade clip, clops through the

center of Historic Downtown Delaware. Described as the

largest non-motorized parade east of the Mississippi, over

500 animals can typically be seen in the parade.

In July, Delaware hosts the annual Blast from the Past

Cruise-In. The whole downtown is jammed with antique,

classic, and vintage cars, and some cruise the streets. This

is also a family-favorite event where the whole day is filled

with strolling the streets, ogling over cars, munching at

restaurants, and browsing shops. If you want to make a

weekend of fun, spend the night and visit the Columbus

Zoo and Aquarium and Zoombezi Bay.

Enjoy a December getaway by combining holiday

shopping with stunning light exhibits at Alum Creek

and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, topped off with a

holiday concert performed by the Central Ohio Symphony.

Plan your visit or hop off Rt. 23 instead of zooming

by and enjoy hometown shopping and dining, arts,

outdoor recreation, or a professional sports experience.

Rather than just driving through on your way to the Zoo, stop for a tasty treat, antique, or one-of-a-kind home décor item. Powell offers some yummy experiences, including

fresh-baked cookies and breads at the local bakery,

mouth-watering ice cream flavors, and even buckeye

cupcakes.

If you’d rather have dinner than feed your sweet tooth,

you’ll discover lots of great options – both locally-owned

and well-known chain restaurants – upscale, down-home,

and family-friendly.

The shops located within the vintage homes lining

Powell’s main street and beyond provide an eclectic

shopping experience. If you’re in the market for an antique

decoration or furnishing, a contemporary décor item, or

Amish furniture, you’ll enjoy exploring the shops in Powell.

You can even create your own candle and paint pottery

while you’re there.

If you also appreciate quality hand-crafted items,

even some you can wear, you’ll want to roam around

both Powell and its next-door neighbor, Shawnee Hills.

High quality items can be found in both locations, and

the unique items you’ll discover also make great gifts.

Shawnee Hills is also a place for some great finds for those

who love to garden.

Plan your visit around a special event such as a Farmer’s

Market, one of three annual Street Market Days, the

Cruise-In and Pig-Out, or the annual Powell Festival.

Outdoor recreation in Powell includes the Columbus

Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay water theme park,

golfing, hiking in parks and nature preserves, as well

as boating and fishing on the near-by Scioto River and

O’Shaughnessy Reservoir, which are also connected to

Shawnee Hills. If you don’t have time as you pass through

on the way to the Zoo, there are plenty of reasons to pick

a day just to play in Powell.

troops. The barn at the Inn exhibits a harness maker’s

shop, wheelwright’s shop, and blacksmith. General

Rosecrans is said to be the only Civil War general without

a statue in his honor, and local historians will soon be

adorning the village square with a life-sized bronze statue

of Sunbury’s Civil War hero.

Some come to Sunbury to pay their respects at the Ohio

Fallen Heroes Memorial, the official Ohio memorial

honoring those from all branches of the military who lost

their lives in the Global War on Terrorism.

If you also want some fun outdoor recreation during

your visit to Sunbury, Alum Creek State Park is just a few

miles away and offers hiking trails, water recreation,

mountain biking, and bridle trails. Go bird watching at

Alum Creek, Hogback Ridge Preserve, or the Mudflats

Boardwalk in Galena. Take a five-mile bike ride by

combining the 4.7 mile Ohio to Erie Trail along St. Rt. 3,

and the .5 mile scenic Hoover Reservoir trail. Both trails

begin on Plumb Road and adventure south. Test your golf

skills playing one of the many near-by public courses.

It’s hard to believe all the experiences available in

Sunbury are located just four

miles east of I-71, where three

hotels and a variety of

restaurants are conveniently

located for travelers.

1514

“How quaint” is what some people say when they first see Sunbury’s village square with its tall shade trees, copula atop the old towne hall, and gleaming white gazebo.

Many times throughout the year, the square bustles

with fun, family-friendly activity. Farmer’s markets, three

annual flea markets, Christmas on the Square, Country

Cruise-In, and living history pageants, happen in the heart

of this small Ohio hometown. Sunbury Sizzle and Sounds

and the Galena Summerfest take place on the same day,

and attendees can catch a trolley ride to experience both

events.

Shop the square and surrounding area for antiques and

nostalgic items, dine at the hometown grille, or opt for

pizza, Asian, or a juicy ¾ lb. burger at the tavern.

The Myers Inn Museum is a Sunbury jewel located on

the southwest corner of the square. A stagecoach inn in the

early 1800’s, where you could share a bed with a stranger

for twenty-five cents, the Inn is now a museum that houses

area relics and history and Civil War memorabilia. You can

no longer spend the night at the Inn, but docent-guided

tours, luncheons, teas, meetings, and other events happen

at the Museum.

The Myers Inn Museum also serves as the headquarters

for Civil War General William Stark Rosecrans re-enactment
