F O R E W O R DPARIS WELCOMES THE WORLD

The City of Light is forever renewing itself, expanding its offer and constantly improving its services to satisfy the specific expectations of your clients. A city for culture, a city for love, a city for pleasure and enteainment … Paris has everything it takes for a great stay.

As well as numerous events like the Fête de la Musique, Paris Plages, the Fête de la Gastronomie, Nuit Blanche and the Nuit des Musées, the year 2016 will be marked by the hosting of the European football championship, the UEFA EURO 2016, from 10 June to 10 July. During this great spoing occasion, all eyes will be on Paris.

Paris offers countless experiences and numerous districts to (re)discover. As from the summer of 2016, a section of the right bank of the Berges de Seine will be reserved for cyclists and pedestrians, with new leisure facilities. The district of Les Halles is also undergoing a massive transformation with the completion of the Canopée and a new park right in the hea of the city. Fashion and design are giving a boost to shopping in trendy districts in the east of Paris, with luxury boutiques, depament stores and outlet stores.

On the accommodation scene, the revamp of palaces and upscale hotels continues. The offer is becoming more diversified with the arrival of new boutique hotels in the 9th, 10th, and 13th arrondissements that are offering their guests the oppounity to experience the Paris of the Parisians. Gastronomy is updating: alongside starred restaurants, numerous bistronomique addresses are springing up and blending culinary influences from all around the globe. Finally, an ever-rich cultural programming has something for all the public, specialist or amateur.

Together with the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau, all of Paris’s tourist trade professionals are at your service to enrich your programmes and give your clients a memorable stay! We are eager to welcome them!

D E S T I N AT I O N PA R I SParis offers outstanding aractions and is continually reinventing itself delighting and aracting more and more visitors. This trend is not wholly aributable to a vibrant cultural scene. Whether it be in terms of hotels, or activities as diverse as outings or shopping, the French capital combines tradition and modernity offering a resolutely unique ‘a de vivre’.

ALL KINDS OF CULTURE

Paris is famous for its artistic, historic and cultural heritage but the city is also a trendseer, inno-vative and dynamic. The sheer number of annual inaugurations and reopening of cultural sites illustrate this dynamism. An extensive variety

of guided tours or alternative visits enable visitors to discover unexpected aspects of the city. The Greater Paris metropolitan area and Île-de-France region which encircle Paris also offer an abundance of exceptional places to visit: chateaux and gardens, museums, stadiums, theme parks, etc.

A MYTHICAL … AND DYNAMIC CITY

Magical, eternal, surprising, romantic … adjectives are not lacking to describe Paris. The city’s famous museums and monuments, gastronomy, Seine river-banks and fashion designers make it one of the world’s leading tourist desti-nations!More than 300 cultural events take place every day in Paris, a clear sign of its creativity and vitality. The year is also interspersed with major events: Bastille Day, Paris Plages, Nuit Blanche, the FIAC (International Contemporary A Show), the Christmas lights and Fête de la musique.

What will be the future top aractions in the capital and the new reasons to plan a visit?

Cultural events for 2016: reopening of the newly-renovated Musée de l’Homme (Museum of Mankind) aer six years of closure, opening of a peume museum in the Opéra district, reopening of the Rodin Museum, transformation of the Les Halles district with the inauguration of the brand new Canopy over a shopping and cultural complex, redevelopment of the Seine riverbanks and reopening of the AccorHotels Arena (formerly POPB Bercy) which will become one of the 5 biggest spo and music venues in the world … as well as new restaurants, hotels and boutiques opening daily, with more on the horizon.

WHAT’S NEW?

PARIS ON THE MOVE

Every day, Paris offers its visitors and inhabitants a surprising and new appearance. Openings, renovations and redevelopments follow on one a¤er the other so that the city seems constantly on the move. Entire areas have recently undergone bold transformations to create greener, healthier and enjoyable surroundings. Foremost is the Promenade des berges de la Seine – André Gorz, a 4.5-hectare promenade with recreational facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Car traffic has also been banned from most of the Place de la République and replaced with trees and playgrounds. As for the renovation of Les Halles, the shopping hea of the city, it includes rede-signed gardens, an extensive pedestrian area, and a modernized shopping centre covered with a nature-inspired ‘canopy’. Moreover, the city is pushing its boundary limits a lile fuher. It is establishing links with neighbouring towns and districts to be discovered as a whole destination. The new exten-sions of metro lines, beyond the city limits, illustrate how ‘Paris’ today means far more than it used to.

AN ECO-FRIENDLY DESTINATION

Paris has made sustainable development a priority, notably with measures like: • the opening of new parks and gardens to discover, to add to 460 others in the capital, • the development of non-polluting and amusing forms of transpo,• the introduction of the Vélib’ self-service bicycle rental scheme 24/7, which is a great success with Parisians and tourists and which has been extended to some 30 towns around Paris, and of the Autolib’ self-service electric vehicle hire service, • but also the growing number of organic markets, vegetarian restaurants and ‘made in France’ products.

In 2012, the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau launched a programme ‘For Sustainable Accommo-dation in Paris’.It helps hotels to choose and plan sustainable development initiatives via a self-diagnosis tool. Entirely free, this programme is aimed at helping hotels to implement any initiatives in favour of the environment. This issue was a main focus of discussion during the international climate conference (2015 Paris Climate Conference – COP 21), which took place at the end of 2015. (See p.38.)

Paris can rightly claim to be a global decision-making centre. It is among the top-ranking metropolitan areas in Europe in terms of GDP, registered offices of the 500 largest international companies, education and training, research and development, and number of patents filed. This economic dynamism has encouraged the emergence of infrastructures dedicated to hosting professional meetings and events: 15 congress and exhibition centres and more than 30 conference hotels with more than 300 bedrooms each enable the capital to host events of 100 to 30,000 people and more!

VIParis is currently carrying out a huge renovation of the Parc des Expositions. The extension project will help it to remain in pole position to host major events (2015-2024). Paris’s aractiveness is due to its capacity to surprise, by offering professional infrastructures in a unique seing.

PARIS FOR FAMILIES AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Museums, puppet theatres, parks, zoos or even boutiques … Paris is a great family destination! Every district, park or cultural centre has something for families to enjoy. The capital also has lots for children: innovative ideas and new technology

such as new kinds of guided tours with multimedia suppo and activity trails to download. Numerous hotels and restaurants offer special discounts for children and adapt their products accordingly … 15 to 25 year olds are also most welcome! Seeing an alternative side of the French capital and experi-encing Parisian nightlife are among the main motivations for a trip to Paris.

PARISIAN WAY OF LIFE

When people think about Paris they think about food and shopping – and rightly so! Paris can claim to be the capital of fashion. The depament stores are renowned worldwide as are French historic and luxury brands and many young designers sta out in Paris. No trip to Paris is complete without a taste of French cuisine. From traditional brasseries to contemporary restaurants and trendy food trucks, there is a wide choice to satisfy all lovers of good food. Cooking lessons and gastronomy tours are also available.

Paris gets spos-oriented with the staging of the UEFA EURO 2016™. From 10 June to 10 July, this tournament will gather together 24 footballing nations. Apa from this major event, the French capital offers a wide choice of indoor and outdoor activities for Parisians and visitors. Outdoors, there is street basketball, rollerblading, running … and indoors, spo is practised in numerous spos complexes. For those who prefer to watch … there is plenty to see: the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros, the finish of the Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées, prestigious horseraces … There is something for all spoing fans.

PA R I S C O M M I T T E EIn 2016, the Paris Commiee brings together 96 Parisian leisure and business professionals offering accommodation, sightseeing, shopping and tours & transpo services.

MAJOR AND ONGOING EFFORTS TO MEET SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS

By 2020, Chinese, Mexican, Russian and Central Asian, South East Asian and South Korean visitors will be among the top 12 nationalities in Paris. The challenge for Paris will be in meeting the specific expectations of this clientele in terms of welcome hospitality, especially as they are seeking an ever more individual service. In 2016, the Paris Commiee will continue its effos in this maer. The Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau informs Parisian professionals with concrete recommendations (familiarization sessions on the customs and habits of clients, encouragement to provide information in the languages concerned, staff speaking the language of clients, etc.).

IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF PARIS AS A DESTINATION

The Paris Commiee is keen to encourage mutually productive exchanges between the operators on these markets and Parisian tourism professionals.Pooling their effos on the Chinese, Mexican, Russian and Central Asian, South East Asian and South Korean markets, members of the Paris Committee travel to meet operators in these countries as part of an extensive campaign to promote their products with seminars, workshops, evening events, press conferences, etc. The Marketing Depament of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau presents operators with a global offer. It also benefits from the active suppo of the Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of spo and tourism, who accompanies some of the operations of the Paris Commiee (see ‘Paris Commiee exclusive operations in 2016’ on p.6).

The Paris Commi¢ee is a group of motivated Parisian professionals with an offer tailored to selected markets (in terms of sales and welcome), and who have decided to take an active pa vis-à-vis these markets alongside the Bureau.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COMMITTEE

• Raise the profile of tourism in Paris and its image as a dynamic capital.

• Increase tourism, all segments taken together.

• For the Bureau and professionals: gain a greater understanding of the markets, notably in terms of client expectations (welcome, centres of interest, etc.) and marketing (distribution networks, major players).

• Meet leading operators on markets.

• Be a pla¤orm for dialogue for Parisian operators.

• Share marketing initiatives.

WHAT IS THE PARIS COMMITTEE?

M A R K E T K E Y F I G U R E SThe economies of some of the countries for which the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau has a dedicated commiee met ceain difficulties in overcoming the effect of the financial crisis: a decrease in international demand, the fall in oil prices … However, their dynamism led to them occupying a growing place in tourism in France and in Paris in paicular.

IMF GROWTH PROJECTIONS

A rise in the middle-class population in these countries has largely contributed to developing trips abroad. Moreover, the laer are o¤en still a mark of rising income standards, indicating higher status in the social hier-archy of their country. This characteristic contributes to strengthening the economic weight of these markets. The number of tourists from these coun-tries strongly depends on economic growth, and the long term perspectives look optimistic. The economic growth forecast for the commiee markets points to buoyant tourism activity which should accelerate.

(1) Hotel arrivals in 2014 compared to 2013.(2) Average annual number of nationals that visited France in 2014, compared to that of 2013.(3) Average annual number of nationals that visited France between 2009 and 2014.

With average growth of 3% per year, the number of foreigners staying in hotels in Paris could reach some 10.5 million arrivals in 2020 and more than 12 million in 2030. These forecasts are based on growth rates observed up to now on the number of people visiting Paris from different markets as well as on forecasts by the World Tourism Organization. In total, some 21 million hotel arrivals could be recorded in 2030 compared to 15.5 million in 2014.

In Paris, every day of the week, 200 museums and monuments showcase French cultural treasures, complemented by significant historical sites. All year round, museums and galleries present major crowd-pulling exhibitions. For fans of outdoor fun, leisure parks are not to be missed; and of course, going out in Paris involves over 90 auditoriums, conce halls, 3 opera houses and around 200 theatres and cafés-théâtres. The French cancan continues to liven up Parisian nights with its high-kicking dancing and frilly peicoats. A mythical magic that continues to draw the public to the cabarets and other spectacular shows. Experiencing French ‘a de vivre’ and improving one’s knowledge of French culture is also a very trendy way to enjoy one’s stay in Paris. Last but not least, gastronomy is still one of the main reasons to visit Paris: French gastronomic food has been given Unesco humanity heritage status and Paris is ceainly the best place to enjoy it!

PART 02

Paris, city of fashion and fabulous shopping, is a melting pot of top designers and classic labels. Thousands of window displays showcase fashion and designer creations, from internationally renowned depament stores to neighbourhood boutiques or outlets: whether it be haute couture sophistication or retro chic, prêt-à-poer street wear or bohemian of the week, Sundays and evenings included. In January and July, the sales are another oppounity to make the most of the wide range of products on offer in Paris. The French capital easily competes with well-known shopping cities such as Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong and is always opening new boutiques or malls to aract more visitors. All through the year, foreign visitors living outside the European Union benefit from an additional tax refund of 12%. To qualify for the tax refund, the client must live outside the European Union for more than six months of the year, be more than 15 years of age, and make a purchase of more than €175.01 on the same day in the same shop.

Easy to get around, the city has a user-friendly public transpo infrastructure covering the whole of the capital, with an underground and bus network in constant development. A more unusual way to discover the city in style is to hire a chauffeured limousine or to have a very French tour of Paris in a 2CV, the famous Citroën conveible … Mixing transpo with culture, many companies provide regular tours in Paris and in the Paris region. The River Seine constitutes an original route through Paris … and is ceainly an excellent way to enjoy delighÇul views of the very hea of the city. Finally, incoming agencies are also an invaluable aid in helping to organize bespoke tours. They have specialist knowledge of the Paris destination and the specific characteristics of the nationalities visiting the French capital. Their expeise and resources enable them to organize all events, transpo and programmes for individuals and/or groups as well as excursions, visits and other activities.
